Hi,

You did such a great job helping me before I´ve been asked to try to sort out some more PCs for my friends.

This is the first of 3 PCs I am trying to sort out.

I have downloaded and run the majority of your tools and this cleared a lot of stuff. However, I believe that there are still problems.

On the last scan Ewido found four instances of PSGuard. It could remove one but not the others.

Also, I have a problem with WIndows Firewall. It says it needs to run the Window Firewall/ICS service and this fails. When I try to start the service manually it gives the error message Error 1068 - The dependency service or group failed to start.

Thanks,
johnmw

Windows antispyware locked up for ages during its scanning. It eventually completed and said it had handled PSGuard

No problem. Thanks for the response. I'm new to this sort of thing so I didn't have an idea of how long it takes for people to respond. I realise it's voluntary effort so I'm just very happy for any help at all.

I can't get to the PC today but I'll pop in to my friend's place tomorrow, check whether windows firewall still won't work and post a fresh log.

Ta,

Hi,

As requested, here is a new Hijackthis log.

Behaviour of Windows Firewall is unchanged. Still won´t start giving the same messages as before. I´ll keep poking around on the internet to see whether I can resolve this myself. If not I´ll post something in the debating room and see whether someone has any ideas about this.

Just to let you know that I have various anti-virus and anti-spyware software again.

Both Ewido and Msoft Antispyware found PS Guard. Nothing else was found. I didn´t try to fix this problem with either bit of software as I thought this might impact on your analysis of the Hijackthis log.

Hi johnmw,

First, could you please post the files & locations of the detected PSGuard files?
Please rerun new scans, and post back with the pertinent items.

Regarding the Windows firewall problem:

Let’s check the pertinent Services
  • Click "Start" button then select "Run"
  • Type services.msc then hit OK
  • Scroll down and find the service called:

    Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing
  • Right-click on Service and choose "Properties"
  • On the "Dependencies" tab, expand all listed services
  • Check the status of all of the services listed, by scrolling thru the Services console
  • Let me know what you find

As you can see I´ve not asked for it to be fixed without you saying I should in case there is something you want to check first.

When I tried to check the dependencies in the properties for the item in services.msc all I got was the following message:

"Win32 The dependency service or group failed to start"

Another piece of strange behaviour. I have just switched on the PC speakers and there is a continuous tick tock noise.

Any help gratefully received.

Thanks,
John

Hi John,

First, try to mute your Microphone IN.
Typically, just double click the speaker icon, which will open up the wide Volume Control window.
If Microphone is not listed, click Options then Properties and place a check next to Microphone
When you see the volume control for Microphone, place a check next to Mute
Let me know if that affects the tick-tock noise.

Next, let’s manually delete the PSGuard entries.
Copy the following code into notepad:

Code: Select all
REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ShudderLTD]

Next, click File, then Save As…
For File name: PSFIX.reg
For Save as type: All Files
Choose an easy to find location, such as your desktop, and click Save

Locate PSFIX.reg and double click it.
Click Yes to allow the merge with your registry.

Next, navigate to C:\Program Files\ and delete the entire PSGuard folder.

If the folder won’t delete, right-click and check the properties to ensure it’s not read-only.
If it is, then uncheck the read-only attribute and try again. Individual files within the
PSGuard folder may also have the same attribute. Clear them as necessary.

Let’s see if we can get the list of dependencies for your firewall:

First, copy the following code into notepad:

Code: Select all
regedit /e c:\output.reg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\SharedAccess
notepad c:\output.reg
del /q c:\output.reg

Next, click File, then Save As…
For File name: reg.bat
For Save as type: All Files
Choose an easy to find location, such as your desktop, and click Save

Locate reg.bat and double click it.
Notepad should open, copy all of the text to post back here.
Close notepad.

Run ewido scan again

Post back here with the text above, as well as what ewido found, any problems you may have experienced,
and any other info about how the system is running!

Hi,

Thanks for the response.

I'm not going to be able to get to the PC for the next week or so now as I am not around. I will progress this as soon as I can after I return.

Hi,

Back from the my brother´s wedding and now looking forward to sorting out this PC.

Here are the latest results for you to look at.

Muting the microphone made no difference to the tick-tock noise. Also, the people have bought a USB phone and the microphone on this is not working well either. We can hear people on VoIPBuster and Skype but they can´t hear us at all on VoiPBuster and our speech is very distorted on Skype. Almost to the point where it is not possible for them to understand it. I´ll take the phone and try it out on another PC to check the phone. I´ll also check another phone on this PC. However, I think this may be a problem specific to this PC. Just let me know if you think this is not virus related and I´ll try to find out more and fix it myself.

The PSGuard folder didn´t exist when I looked for it. I also searched for all files/folders called PSGuard and nothing was found.

Here are the results when looking for Windows Firewall dependencies:

Hi John,

Welcome back! I hope your trip was enjoyable! :D
Thought I'd post to let you know that I've received your latest log,
and I'll be working on it soon. I have a 14 hour work day today :x
so, I won't have a chance to dig into it until late tonight. I should have
some more suggestions by tomorrow morning.

Be back with you ASAP!

In the meantime, would you please post a fresh HJT log so I can refer
to the latest as well?

Regards,

Woody_J
