I have a laptop that a turtle could outrun, it goes to advertising web sites unattended....have run avg antivirus clean but still a slug, any help appreciated....

Remove one of your Anti Virus programs.
You are operating your computer with multiple Anti Virus programs running in memory at once:
AVG8
TrendMicro Internet Security

Anti-virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer. Having two or more anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash.

Please remove one of them

Hello Matt,
Had a busy morning and followed your advice...
1st removed trend micro antivirus...
tried before but needed password ..got and removed trend micro

I'm working on this laptop that belongs to a friend...

Next installed combo fix...needed to install recov console, the laptop has XP MCE so uasn't sure whether to use home or pro, looked around couldn,t find any info so I installed the xp home sp2 version of the recovery console...

Ran combo fix and log is below, also did a new hijackthis, it is also below...

still getting popups and running slow, maybe a little faster...

One thing I noticed in the logs is that it gives you files that have been modified in the last 30 days, I think the infection happened a little earlier , if that helps at all...

Updating Java:

• Download the latest version of Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6u6.

• Click the "Download" button to the right.
• Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
• The page will refresh.
• Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
• Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
• Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
• Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
• Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
• Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
• Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
• Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

Your logs are looking good, but I'd like to get a second opinion:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

• Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
• At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
• If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
• Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
• When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
• Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
• When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location.
  The log can also be found here: C:\Documents and Settings\<User name>\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
• Copy and Paste the log into your next reply
