Re: Mallware,Your computer was infected by dangerous virus! Some

Unread postby Elrond » June 16th, 2008, 11:27 am

Hi zollthar

I'm Elrond and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please only use this topic for your replies on this problem. Do not start another thread.
Please note that the fixes we will use are specific to your problems on this computer and should only be used for this problem on this computer.
These things need to be properly researched and a complete fix for many malware problems can take some time and be spread over a number of posts, so please be patient and try to see it through to the end.

Before we start: Please be aware that removing Malware is a hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

In light of this it would be wise for you to back up any files and folders that you don't want to lose before we start.

Please observe these rules while we work:
  • Perform all actions in the order given.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Stick with it till you're given the all clear.
  • REMEMBER, ABSENCE OF SYMPTOMS DOES NOT MEAN THE INFECTION IS ALL GONE.
If you can do these things, everything should go smoothly.
  • Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. (XP accounts are Administrator by default) Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting, but continue with the fix. Please let me know if you are using a computer with multiple accounts, as this can affect the instructions given.
It may be helpful to you to print out or take a copy of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Please note that all instructions given are customized for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.
If you think you have similar problems, please post a log in the HJT forum and wait for help.

Please note that I will be off line for about 26 hours (sundown Friday until nightfall Saturday my local time) every week.

End of preliminaries. What follows is related to analyzing what is on your computer and cleaning it up.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news but unfortunately, you have multiple infections, including a backdoor that specializes instealing information including passwords etc for bankaccounts. This gives intruders complete control of your computer, logging key strokes, stealing information, etc. :(
You are strongly advised to do the following immediately!:
  • Disconnect infected computer from the internet and from any networked computers until the computer can be cleaned.
  • Call all of your banks, credit card companies, financial institutions and inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft and to put a watch on your accounts or change all your account numbers.
  • From a clean computer, change *all* of your online passwords -- for ISP login, email, banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, online companies, and any online forums or groups you belong to.
Do NOT change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker will get the new passwords and transaction information.
Because of its backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure it can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. However, if you do not have the resources to reinstall your OS and would like me to attempt to clean your machine, I will be happy to do so.

To help you make a more informed decision, please read the following articles:
Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask

Please let me know your decision and we'll get started with clean up if that's what you choose

I would recomend that you reformat the computer. The problem is that even though I probably can clean up what I have found I can never be sure that the people behind the infection did not change something that I cannot find because I cannnot check everything on the computer, it is just too much. If there is something hidden that I do not find it could be woken up one day and then the computer is infected again.
If you have no possibility to reformat the computer I will do my best but as I already said, no guarantees and the computer should not be used for anything sensetive. Let me know what you decide because If you decide to reformat the computer I want to give you some advice that could help you avoid a repeat prefomance. If you decide to clean up the computer then I will give you the first set of instructions.

OK. I will not be able to tell you exactly how you got infected but I will later on tell some things you can do to avoid being reinfected.

  1. Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

    • Restart your computer
    • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
    • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
    • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
    • Choose your usual account.
    • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
    • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
    • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
    • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
    • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
    • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
    • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

  2. Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading ComboFix at your DESKTOP :
    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

Additional links to download the tool:
    http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
    http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
    http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe

Note: The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

    Please continue as follows:
    • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.
    • When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.
    • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt along with a new HijackThis log so we may continue cleaning the system.

  3. Download and Run a Diagnostic Tool (MGADiag.exe) from here and save this to your desktop.
    http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=56062
