I ran the computer in safe mood and went back to control panel and tried yet again to remove java runtime 6, but it did not work yet again. it wont give me an option to remove/uninstall/or even change the program. I have my windows update on automatic update.

Hi
Java can be very defiant at times. I don't know why this happens sometimes but it's certainly annoying.
Lets try something else to remove the old version:

Please download JavaRa, a simple tool that removes old and redundant versions of the Java Runtime Environment (JRE).
Extract the file to your desktop and right-click JavaRa.exe and select Run as Admistrator
Click the Remove Older Versions button and allow any UAC prompts
When it has completed, please restart your computer

Please also run one more scan to see if anything malicious is left on your pc.

Run Kaspersky Online AV Scanner
Using Internet Explorer Go to http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/english/kavwebscan.html and click the Kaspersky Online Scanner button.
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.
  • Read the Requirements and limitations before you click Accept.
  • Allow the ActiveX download if necessary.
  • Once the database has downloaded, click Next.
  • Click Scan Settings and change the "Scan using the following antivirus database" from standard to extended and then click OK.
  • Click on "My Computer" and then put the kettle on!
  • When the scan has completed, click Save Report As...
  • Enter a name for the file in the Filename: text box and then click the down arrow to the right of Save as type: and select text file (*.txt)
  • Click Save - by default the file will be saved to your Desktop, but you can change this if you wish.
Copy and paste the report into your next reply along with a fresh HJT log and a description of how your PC is behaving.

Hi
Welcome back :)
The infected file remaining on your PC is as a direct result of using Frostwire, a peer-2-peer program. I cannot emphasise how important it is that using this kind of software is VERY dangerous.
To delete the offending file do the following:
Right-click "Computer" and select Explore
Navigate to C:\Users\J&Kim\Documents\frostwire and delete dj tiesto- Titanic.mp3

Next download ViewpointKiller to your dekstop
Unzip all of the contents of "ViewpointKiller.zip" to a location such as your desktop.

Browse to the folder that contains ViewpointKiller and right-click ViewpointKiller.exe and select Run as Administrator
Select the "File" menu, and select "Viewpoint Installed?"
If ViewpointKiller indicates that any of the Viewpoint variants are installed, select the proper "Kill" option in the File menu.

Follow the prompts and instructions very carefully, answering "Yes" or "No" depending on which option you are most comfortable with.

ViewpointKiller will then attempt to remove the Viewpoint variant(s) specified. It will give you a short output on the main screen, and write more detailed information to a logfile called "ViewpointKiller.log" in your main hard drive folder.
To access this log, select the "File" menu, and select "Open Logfile".

Please copy and paste this logfile into your next reply along with a new HijackThis log

Hi

Please open HijackThis
Click Scan only
Place a checkmark against the following:
  • R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
Close ALL open programs except HijackThis
Click Fix checked
Close HijackThis

Let's clear out the programs we've been using to clean up your computer, they are not suitable for general malware removal and could cause damage if used inappropriately.

Download OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer to your Desktop.
  • Double click OTMoveIt2.exe to launch it.
  • Click on the CleanUp! button.
  • OTMoveIt will download a list from the Internet, if your firewall or other defensive programs alerts you, allow it access.
  • You will be prompted to allow the clean up procedure, click Yes
  • When finished exit out of OTMoveIt2
  • Now delete OTMoveIt2.exe (if still present)
Any other tools we have used should also be deleted (this includes JavaRa and ViewpointKiller)

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

  1. Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME/XP/Vista then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

    Reset System Restore.
Now you should disable System restore to purge any infected files and then re-enable it,

    On the Desktop, right-click Computer.
    Click Properties.
    Click the System Protection tab.
    Check Turn off System Protection.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
    Restart your computer

    Turn ON System Restore

    On the Desktop, right-click Computer.
    Click Properties.
    Click the System Protection tab.
    Un-Check Turn off System Protection.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
  2. Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    2. Click once on the Security tab
    3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
      1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      2. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      3. Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  3. Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  4. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  5. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Download and install Spybot - Search and Destroy.
You should install this and activate it's Immuizer function to block malicious programs from installing. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D
  6. Install ThreatFire - Download and install ThreatFire. This program defends against malware by detecting certain malicious behaviours. It is configured "out-of-the-box" and acts as a complement to your Antivirus software. It can be downloaded here:
    PC Tools ThreatFire
  7. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

I have done everything you stated in your previous post. I ran another HJT log just to make sure their is nothing else is left on the computer. I still see the viewpoint manager when i go to programs and features. Also, i wanted to know about a good firewall that is vista campatible. Here is my hjt log.

Re: Need some serious help! Have a virus!

Hi
Please uninstall Viewpoint Manager from the Programs and Features window.

To be honest, the Windows Firewall in Vista is OK, but if you do want a 3rd party firewall here is a good list:

Please bear in mind that some of the programs listed are suites, which means they contain an antivirus program too. If you choose one of these suites you must uninstall your current antivirus program.
If you choose a "stand-alone" firewall you can keep your current antivirus.

Hope that helps

Hi
That is correct. Most stand-alone firewall installers will do this for you, but you should check to make sure.
