I first found out about this virus when antivir sent me a message about the virus. I deleted the file but ran a kaspersky scan just in case. It found 1 virus from a song i downloaded on frostwire. Here is the HJT log i ran afterwards.I am running vista by the way. Thank you.

Hello, and welcome to Malware Removal Forums.
My name is Matt and I will be assisting you with your malware issues.
Please be patient as I need some time to review your HijackThis log and I will post back recommendations for repairs.
As I am still on training, everything that I post to you, must be checked by a Teacher. Thus, there may be a tiny bit of a delay between posts, but it shouldn't be too long.

  • Whatever repairs we make, are for fixing your computer problems only and by no means should be used on another computer.
  • Continue to respond to this thread until I give you the All Clean! If you have any questions or you're stuck in there please reply it to me. I will try my best to help you! Not having symptoms of malware doesn't mean that you are clean!
  • Please do not carry out tasks on your own before I reply as this will only complicate things and may mean that my instructions are useless or dangerous!
  • Please bookmark or favourite this page. In case you need it as reference or etc.

Hi
You are running an older version of Hijack This. The newer version works better with Windows Vista.

  • Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
It is important that you uninstall any previous versions by using Programs and Features in your Control Panel before installing a newer version.
  • Right-click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop and select Run As Administrator (Windows Vista User Account Control should prompt you)
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This\
  • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialogue.
  • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
  • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
  • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
  • Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Remove one of your Anti Virus programs.
You are operating your computer with multiple Anti Virus programs running in memory at once:
Antivir
McAfee

Anti-virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer. Having two or more anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash.

Please remove one of them

I see that Viewpoint is installed. Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player's components. You can disable this using the Viewpoint Manager Control Panel found in the Windows Control Panel menu. By selecting Disable auto-updating for the Viewpoint Manager -- the player will no longer attempt to check for updates. Anything that is installed without your consent is suspect. Read what Viewpoint says and make your own decision.
To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint. Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player. The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information. CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without user's approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This may change, read Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware.
I recommend that you remove the Viewpoint products; however, decide for yourself. To uninstall the the Viewpoint components (Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player):
  • Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  • In Control Panel, double-click Programs and Features.
  • In Programs and Features, highlight Viewpoint Manager, click Remove.
  • Do the same for each Viewpoint component.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location.
    The log can also be found here: C:\Documents and Settings\<User name>\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
  • Copy and Paste the log into your next reply

===============================
In your next reply can I please see the following:
  • New HijackThis log
  • mbam-log-date (time).txt

Hi
I see that you have the Ask Toolbar installed. While this program isn't malicious, it does have a dubious background, see >this article< for more information. I recommend that you uninstall it through Programs and Features.

Interesting that you can't remove some of Viewpoint. The following log will give me some more information:

Uninstall List
  • Open HijackThis.
  • Click on Open the Misc Tools section.
  • Look under System tools.
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager... button.
  • Click on the Save list... button.
  • It will prompt you to save. Save this log in a convenient location. By default it's named uninstall_list.txt.
  • Notepad will open. Please copy and paste the contents of this log in your next reply.
See this link for details:
http://img.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/hijackthis/uninstall-man.jpg

Antivirus
With regards to your antivirus, the choice is really up to you. Both programs are perfectly adequate. However, Antivir is free, whereas you will have to maintain a paid-subscription with McAfee.
I suggest you keep the program you like best.

To uninstall either of them:
  • Log on to an administrator account
  • Shut down/disable the Antivirus program that is to be removed. This option will usually be found by right clicking the programs's icon in the System Tray (next to the clock)
  • Next, go to Start > All Programs and check for an entry for the antivirus program that is to be removed. If found, check the program's submenu for the option to "Uninstall" the product.
  • Select that option and allow it to remove the antivirus program, then restart your computer

If there is no "Uninstall" option, please do the following:
  • Click Start > Control Panel
  • Click Programs and Features
  • Select from the list the antivirus program you want to remove and click Remove
  • If you are not prompted to you should restart your computer

I also wanted to ask, I know that my windows firewall is not as strong as it should be. Should i get another firewall like zone alarm and is it compatible with windows vista? Thank you.

Hi

Do you have Windows Automatic Updates on?
To check this click Start > Control Panel > Windows Updates

P2P PROGRAMS

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

Frostwire

I'd like you to read the Guidelines for P2P Programs where we explain why it's not a good idea to have them.

Also available here.

My recommendation is you go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the programs listed above (in red).

IF YOU CHOOSE TO KEEP THEM, DO NOT USE THEM UNTIL WE HAVE FINISHED RIDDING YOUR COMPUTER OF MALWARE!!!

On it's own, the Windows Vista firewall is perfectly adequate. It is better than the XP firewall. However, if you continue to use peer-2-peer (which I DO NOT recommend) you will NEVER be fully protected. I will suggest some good, FREE firewalls when you are clean, as installing a firewall when you may still have malware can result in system instability and crashes.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6u6.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Programs and Features programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

DownLoad CCleaner

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders. If you have anything in a temp folder,
back it up or move it to a permanent folder prior to running CCleaner!

Download CCleaner to clean temp files from your computer.

Double click on the file to start the installation of the program.
Select your language and click OK, then next.
Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
Click next to use the default install location. Click Install then finish to complete installation.
Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
On the "Windows" tab, under "Internet Explorer," uncheck "Cookies" if you do not want them deleted.
(If deleted, you will likely need to reenter your passwords at all sites where a cookie is used to recognize you when you visit).
If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for "Cookies" is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla.
Click on the "Options" icon at the left side of the window, then click on "Advanced."
deselect "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours."
Caution: It is not recommended that you use the "Issues" feature unless you are very familiar with the registry as it has been known to find legitimate items.

  • Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
  • A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
  • Click "OK"
  • CCleaner will scan and clean your system.
  • When cleaning is complete:
  • Click "Exit".
  • Repeat for all usernames.

Hi
The HijackThis log you have posted is the same one as before, this can occasionally happen on Vista.
Please go to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\ and delete any log files that may be present
Then right-click the HijackThis icon on your desktop and select Run as Administrator (please allow any UAC prompts)
From there please create a new HijackThis log to copy and paste into your next reply.

Do you have Windows Automatic Updates on?
To check this click Start > Control Panel > Windows Updates
Then select "Change settings" in the left hand panel
Make sure you have selected the following:
  • "Install updates automatically"
  • "Recommended updates"
  • "Use Microsoft Update" - this will allow you to also receive updates for other Microsoft products you may have installed, such as Word, Outlook, etc.

Can you please try uninstalling Java(TM) SE RunTime Environment 6 in Safe Mode?
Go into Safe Mode by restarting your computer, then continually tapping F8 until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.
Make sure you close ALL programs before trying to uninstall the old Java, using my previous instructions.
