Re: New Hijackthis log for your help please

Unread postby chryssi2001 » June 3rd, 2008, 7:07 am

Hello DJGarry,

I apologise for the delay. The forum is too busy.
----------------------------------------------
I will be assisting you with your malware issues.

  • Whatever repairs we make, are for fixing your computer problems only and by no means should be used on another computer.
  • Continue to respond to this thread until I give you the All Clean! If you have any question or you're stuck in there please reply it to me. I will try my best to help you!
  • Please bookmark or favourite this page. In case you need it as reference or etc.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
If you are using Windows Vista you must right click on the desktop icon and choose Run as Administrator all tools.
----------------------------------------------
I need a new HijackThis log.

Before you post it, go in your Zips folder and remove HijackThis.exe C:\Users\Garry\Documents\Zips\HijackThis.exe
----------------------------------------------
Download and Run HijackThis
Download HJTInstall.exe to your Desktop.

  • Doubleclick HJTInstall.exe to install it.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Copy/Paste the log to your next reply please.

Don't use the Analyse This button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
Don't have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Hello DJGarry,

Remove/Disable one of your Anti Virus programs.
You are operating your computer with multiple Anti Virus programs running in memory at once:

AVG7
Symantec

Anti-virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer. Having two anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash.

Please remove one of them.

Note:You will need to re-boot your pc after you remove one of your Anti-Virus programs. See below a usefull link about Symantec removal.
----------------------------------------------
If you will uninstall Symantec you will need this link, to completely uninstall it.

REMOVE NORTON

ONLY if you don't have an active subscription, use below link to uninstall, and install a free AV from my links below.

Please click HERE and follow the instructions to download and run the norton removal tool for your own version.

It is strongly recommended that you run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and can result in program conflicts and false virus alerts.
----------------------------------------------
Show All Files And Folders in Vista
Now you need to show all files and folders
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Organise menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
  • Now double click on My Computer
  • Double click on Local Disk C:
  • Double click on the Windows Folder.
  • Double click on the System32 Folder.
  • Locate the file, ActiveToolBand.dll
  • Right click on it and click Properties.
  • Click on General Tab, you will see the File size. Please let me know the size.
  • Click on the Version tab (if one is showing). If no Version tab, just close the window and let me know.
  • Let me know what it says under the Company.
  • Let me know what it says under the Product Name.
----------------------------------------------
Disable MS Defender until the computer is clean
Microsoft Defender normally provides real-time protection from spyware, however it may interfere with what we need to do. We will disable it until the machine is clean when it can be re-enabled.

- Open Windows Defender
- Select Tools and then General Settings
- Under Real Time Protection Options uncheck Turn on real-time protection
- Select Save
Don't forget to re-enable it, when your computer is clean.
----------------------------------------------
Download and Run ComboFix
If you already have Combofix, please delete this copy and download it again as it's being updated regularly.
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.
----------------------------------------------
Post back:
Information about ActiveToolBand.dll
Combofix report.
A new HijackThis log.

Un-installed Norton Internet Security Centre.
Showing all files & extensions
ActiveToolBand.dll size is 299,008 bytes

In the Details (there is no Version tab) tab is:

File Discription: Active ToolBand Module
Type: Application Extension
File version: 3.0.0.2
Product name: (blank)
Product version: 3.0.0.1
Copyright: Copyright 2005
Size: 292 KB
Date Modified: 03/01/2007 02:54
Language: English (United States)

For Windows Defender, there is no Real Time Protection Options.
Under Tools & Settings, there is a check box active for Auto Scan My Computer with some default actions selected below for when it does a scan.
I've looked in the other Tools & Setting options and can't find anything for Real Time Protection.

Cannot disable AVG. Opening the control centre then unticking the box for Resident Sheild... then as soon as I click on 'OK' it stays in the loaded and fully functional state.

I'll let you decide what to do about those before I run ComboFix and Hijack this again.....

Check this link about Real-Time Protection for Windows Defender.
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/13f74d76-344a-4dcc-9284-7ab43d9171b21033.mspx

This link is explaining how to Turn Windows Defender on or off.
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/31d797aa-091d-4d67-a556-dbfaf21bf0dc1033.mspx
------------------------------------------
Cannot disable AVG. Opening the control centre then unticking the box for Resident Sheild... then as soon as I click on 'OK' it stays in the loaded and fully functional state.

Try this:

Disable AVG
  • Right click on the AVG icon in your system tray (bottom right next to the clock)
  • Select “Launch AVG Free Control Center”
  • On the Security status page, you should see a list of items with green check boxes next to them.
  • Right click on “Resident shield” and select “Properties”
  • Un check “Turn on AVG Free resident Shield protection”
  • Click OK

Let me know if still any problems.

Windows Defender is off now.

AVG will still not turn off. The way you discribed is how I was trying to do it.
I have tries other ways... by selecting Resident Sheild and then clicking on the Proprties box.
Still not turning off.

I could un-install it if you like as there is a newer version out now so when I need it on again, I'll install that one.???

Unless you know of another way that might work.

Hi, i am at the office now, so i don't have access on my home pc with AVG7.
As far as i can remember, when you open AVG7, on the left hand top corner first tab, has an exit option.
Check it out, otherwise i will post back as soon as i check my home pc.

There is an exit option under the first tab 'Program' but all it does is shut down the Control Centre. It still leaves the Resident Sheild running and active.
The same version of AVG turns off first time of asking on my desktop PC.

Could there be a bug in AVG???
Would un-installing the program kill it???
That's if the un-install option works !!!!!

This ones getting interesting isn't it ??????

Ok i am back. Are you sure you saved the setting when you deselect the "Turn on AVG Resident Shield"?
This is the proper way to do it and it's the same like the one i posted before.
If you re-try and doesn't work, click on Program Tab, and Exit completely AVG.

Disable AVG Resident Shield
  1. Please open the AVG Control Center program -> double-click on the "AVG Resident Shield" component (looks like this:Image) -> deselect the "Turn on AVG Resident Shield" checkmark and save the setting.
  2. When you need to enable the AVG Resident Shield, just open the AVG Control Center program -> double-click on the "AVG Resident Shield" component -> select the "Turn on AVG Resident Shield" checkmark and save the setting.
Use Step 2 to re-enable AVG Resident Shield when needed.

Yes, I'm definatly doing it right. The same program on my desktop pc shuts the redident sheild down as soon as I click on 'Apply'. The laptop makes a Windows 'ping' sound when I try to do anything with AVG also.... just selecting the Resident Sheild component, clicking on 'Properties' etc.
Clicking the 'Appy' button does nothing, then clicking the 'OK' button does nothing also. The Resident Sheild stays active.

I cannot deactivate any of the other components in AVG either. The same thing happens with every one I try. Weird !!!!!

Hacked ?????

Can you do this?
Click on Program Tab, and Exit completely AVG
After you do this, try to run Combofix no matter what.
We'll see if AVG is running, and see what to do then.

Unless your AVG is corrupted, i can't find something else which will prevent it from turning it off.

The problem with uninstalling AVG is, that after you run Combofix, we will need to disable it for a 2nd time for the fix.
So you will be uninstalling, re-installing, uninstalling, reinstalling. :(

Right, I dont thnk AVG turned off.... just the control centre shut down.
Windowsis now VERY unstable. I keep getting 'Windows Explorer needs to shut down' messages.
Everything dissapears except the window I'm working on, the desktop goes blank (to wallpaper) and it then restarts. It stays for only 10 - 20 seconds, then shuts down again... over and over.

Here's the Combofix log:

And after it, the Hijack this log.

Good luck :-)
