Hello! :hello2: and welcome to the Malware Removal forums.
I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research so please be patient while I work on your log and I will post back here with any recommendations.
As I am still training, everything that I post to you, must be checked by an Admin or Moderator. Thus, there may be a tiny bit of a delay between posts. While it shouldn't be too long, you can be assured you will get the best possible advice.

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

You should be aware that there are signs of a commercial keylogging program on your computer

Because it is impossible for us to establish ownership of the computer whose log you have posted, we are also unable to establish whether the program was installed with the owners permission. There may be legal ramifications with its removal which we are not equipped or trained to deal with. Because of this, we are unable to give directions to remove it from the computer.
  • If this is a Company machine, and you feel the program was not installed by your company, notify your company's IT department or those responsible for computer security.
  • If this is a private machine you may wish to take legal advice. Removal, also may need to be done by a suitably qualified professional.

This is a private home computer that my kids use. I predict the keylogger came from something they said yes to. Can you indicate which lines these are referring to and I can determine or have someone determine for me, whether or not they are legitamite or not.
Thanks

Hi,

As it implies a commercial keylogger has probably been purchased by someone, so it is unlikely to have been downloaded by accident. You should probably ask everybody who uses or has used the computer in recent times about it. If you still can not find anything about it, it might be a good idea to change your msn passwords from a different computer. I'm really sorry I can't be any more help, but my hands are tied with such issues. :(

I purchased a program the tracks my children's msn chats and computer usage, so is that what you mean by a commercial keylogger?

If it is, I want that on there, I have a teenager.

It's the teenager's msn that keeps sending out messages with link on them to all of her contacts on her list. The program I purchased does not do that, it only send me copies of her chats and emails.

OK that's probably what I'm seeing, if you could tell me the name of the monitoring program so I can confirm it please.

I'll take a deeper look at your computer now.

Step 1:
Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  1. Close all applications and windows.
  2. Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  3. When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  4. Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt in your reply.

Logs to Post:
Please copy and paste the following into your next reply:
  • main.txt and extra.txt from the DSS scan

Here are the copied contents of main.txt and extra.txt
Note: The parental software I am using is called pctt (PC Tattletale)
Also Note: I "fixed" some entries that can up in HJT report, you will see them in the main.txt list enclosed.
I hope I "fixed" the right ones.
Thanks for looking and I await to see what you find.

Re: MSN messenger sending out messages on it's own

Unread postby Rodav » June 4th, 2008, 3:20 pm

The parental software I am using is called pctt (PC Tattletale)
That's what I can see, thanks for confirming it.

I "fixed" some entries that can up in HJT report, you will see them in the main.txt list enclosed.
I hope I "fixed" the right ones.
It's better if you don't do any fixing on your own, if you are unsure about anything or would like to have more information you can always ask me first. If you wanted to remove MSN or the Google products from your computer you can do so via Add/Remove programs. So it is best to restore them for now.

I can't see much from the DSS logs, but I can look further.

Step 1:
  • Open HijackThis.
  • Open the Misc Tools section.
  • Click on backups tab.
  • Find the lines below.

    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=69157
    O2 - BHO: Windows Live Sign-in Helper - {9030D464-4C02-4ABF-8ECC-5164760863C6} - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Windows Live\WindowsLiveLogin.dll
    O9 - Extra button: Messenger - {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} - C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe
    O4 - Global Startup: Google Updater.lnk = C:\Program Files\Google\Google Updater\GoogleUpdater.exe
    O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {e2e2dd38-d088-4134-82b7-f2ba38496583} - C:\WINDOWS\Network Diagnostic\xpnetdiag.exe
    O2 - BHO: Google Toolbar Notifier BHO - {AF69DE43-7D58-4638-B6FA-CE66B5AD205D} - C:\Program Files\Google\GoogleToolbarNotifier\3.0.1225.9868\swg.dll
    O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: @xpsp3res.dll,-20001 - {e2e2dd38-d088-4134-82b7-f2ba38496583} - C:\WINDOWS\Network Diagnostic\xpnetdiag.exe
    O23 - Service: Google Updater Service (gusvc) - Google - C:\Program Files\Google\Common\Google Updater\GoogleUpdaterService.exe
    O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Windows Messenger - {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} - C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe

  • Put a tick and click on Restore.

Step 2:
  • Open HijackThis Main Menu
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

    O2 - BHO: Adobe PDF Reader Link Helper - {06849E9F-C8D7-4D59-B87D-784B7D6BE0B3} - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Acrobat\ActiveX\AcroIEHelper.dll (file missing)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE

  • Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
  • Click on the "Fix Checked" button
  • When completed, close the application and Restart your computer.

Step 3:
  • Click Start
  • Go to Control Panel
  • Go to Add/Remove Programs
  • Find and click Remove for the following (if present):

    Java(TM) 6 Update 3
    Java(TM) 6 Update 5

Older versions of Java have vulnerabilities that malware can exploit, these need to be removed then you can download the latest version which is Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6 and install it to your computer from the link I provided.

Step 4:
Using Internet Explorer Go to http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html and click the Accept button at the end of the page.

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.
    • Read the Requirements and limitations before you click Accept.
    • Allow the ActiveX download if necessary.
    • Once the database has downloaded, click Next.
    • Click Scan Settings and change the "Scan using the following antivirus database" from standard to extended and then click OK.
    • Click on "My Computer" and then put the kettle on!
    • When the scan has completed, click Save Report As...
    • Enter a name for the file in the Filename: text box and then click the down arrow to the right of Save as type: and select text file (*.txt)
    • Click Save - by default the file will be saved to your Desktop, but you can change this if you wish.
Copy and paste the report into your next reply.

Step 5:
  • Please download F-Secure Blacklight (fsbl.exe) from here
  • Save into C:\ with a name of fsbl.exe
  • Go to Start > Run
  • Copy and paste the contents of the below codebox into the run box
    Code: Select all
    C:\fsbl.exe /expert
  • Click OK
  • This will launch BlackLight
  • Select I accept the agreement
  • Click Next
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • When the scan has finished Exit the program making sure not to remove anything if found
  • A logfile will have been created in the C:\ drive
  • It will be named fsbl-xxxxxxxxxxxxxx.log where xxxxxxxxxxxxxx is the date and time of the scan
  • Use notepad to open that log
  • Post the contents of that log as a reply to this topic.

Step 6:
Run DSS and in your next reply please post:
  • The online Kaspersky scan report
  • The Blacklight results
  • The new DSS log

Due to lack of response, this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
