Multiple Trojan Issue

Unread postby slycer2000 » May 27th, 2008, 6:27 am

Hi, been working on this for a couple of days, now I'm ready to ask for help. According to Spybot S&D I have a flaming case of Smitfraud-C on my desktop computer. I downloaded SmitFraudFix, but it won't even open to run. I tried Smitrem, but that didn't work. After numerous other supposed remedies, I am turning to HijackThis. The logfile is attached.

Hi your version of HJT is the beta version can you:

Download and Run HijackThis
Download HJTInstall.exe to your Desktop.

* Doubleclick HJTInstall.exe to install it.
* By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
* Click on Install.
* It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
* Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
* Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
* Copy/Paste the log to your next reply please.

Don't use the Analyse This button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
Don't have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

please post new HJT log

Hi, sorry for the delay. The problem is on a friend's computer. I did as you asked and followed your link to download the actual version of HiJackThis, v2.0.2, I think it was. This is the log from the scan from that version:

I don't really see too much difference size-wise between this logfile and my original one. All the others I've seen have been huge. Not sure what's going on. Once again, any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

One other thing I forgot to mention. I have downloaded SmitFraudFix for this issue, but I could not get it to run. The hourglass would appear next to my cursor momentarily, but then everything would shut back down. Thanks again.

AntiVirus
You have a couple of AV's running, you're actually doing more harm than good by running more than one Anti Virus program.
When you do this the programs compete for resources, and the end result is none does it's best and can cause system instability.
I recommend that you choose one that you want to keep.
The other/s I would either uninstall, or disable from startup and use as "on demand" for an occasional scan.

Please note that almost all "free" security software is only free for home/private users

let me know which you decide to keep as you may need a tool to assist you.

When you say anti-virus, are you talking about JUST the anti-virus specific programs, or do you mean the anti-spyware programs as well? Thanks.

You have NOD32 Antivirus and Symantec (Norton) running on the same system, don't worry about anti spyware programs :)

Nod32 is the only active anti-virus working on the computer right now. Symantec was uninstalled, and I am unable to delete the core files of the program. Suffice it to say, Norton is not actually running right now. Here is a fresh HiJackThis log:

This will tidy the rest of norton up for you

Remove Norton

Please click HERE and follow the instructions to download and run the norton removal tool

_________________________

We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:

  1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  2. Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt
New HijackThis log.

Due to lack of response, this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
