Smitfraud or variant; HJT log attached

Unread postby Dougmeister » May 21st, 2008, 8:32 am

Friend's computer had issues, said I'd take a look. Windows XP Home, SP2.

Followed the steps at EliteKiller.com:

1. Rebooted to safe mode
2. Disabled system restore
3. Ran "fix tools" for task manager and registry re-enable
4. Installed and ran CCleaner
* 5. Ran Combofix (didn't appear to do anything?)
* 6. Ran SmitfraudFix (didn't appear to do anything?)
Double-click, hourglass for a few seconds, then... nothing?)
7. Ran Roguefix
8. Ran Sdfix
9. Ran VundoFix (found nothing)
* 10. Couldn't even install MBAM. (didn't appear to do anything?)
11. Ran HiJack This, created log

Have NOT performed these steps yet:

12. Download the Kaspersky AVPTool
13. Download, install, update, and run a Full scan w/ SUPERAntiSpyware (install in normal mode)

*Note: only did this one the user account (that appears to have admin rights). There is also an "Administrator" account but I'm not sure if my friend created it or possibly the malware? Not sure if I should repeat these steps on that account or not. The docs say to perform them for all user accounts...

Attached is the HJT log.

Red bold are my guesses as to what should go.

Red normal are ones I'm not sure about.

Please advise. Thanks.

Hello Dougmeister :) ,

I apologise for the delay.

If you still need help, post a new HijackThis log (Normal Mode).

Do not run other tools or make and other fixes please.

Got it fixed by running some suggested programs and by uploading the HJT log to the HJT website.

Thanks.
