Run HijackThis, select Do a system scan only and place checks against the following entries (if they are still present)

Please note! The HijackThis O6 section corresponds to an Administrative lock down for changing the options or the homepage in Internet explorer by changing certain settings in the registry.
This entry would legitimately show if an administrator set the restriction on purpose or if the user utilized Spybot S&D's Home Page and Option Lock down features in the Mode ->Advanced Mode -> Tools -> IE Tweaks section. (Or there could be other similar tools with similar options/functions.
Are you the administrator and did you set the restriction? If you didn't, then you can fix the following entry.

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

WITH ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED Click on Fix Checked and exit

Update Java Runtime Environment (JRE)

Your JRE is out of date. The current version is Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6.

  1. Click on Start > Control Panel and double click on Add/Remove Programs. Locate J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2 and click on Change/Remove to uninstall it.
  2. Repeat for these old versions of JRE:

Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.1_02
  3. Click here to visit Java's website.
  4. Scroll down to Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6. Click on Download.
  5. Select Windows from the drop-down list for Platform.
  6. Select Multi-language from the drop-down list for Language.
  7. Check (tick) I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement box and click on Continue.
  8. Click on jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe link to download it and save this to a convenient location.
  9. Run this installation to update your Java.

Re: Task Manager has been disabled--Can't access internet

Unread postby Catbarber » May 25th, 2008, 11:34 am

Dan,
First the improvements:
Well the PC is allowing me to get on the internet, the security settings in IE are not changing to lower levels, I can access the Task Manager, Norton Internet Security seems to be stable and unchanged.

Possible issue but may be a settings issue:
Web pages are SLOW to load and in about 50 % of the time they don't load on the first try ("page cannot be displayed")
but then after Refreshing the page it will load 95% of the time.
After I downloaded a file from Symantec to fix a problem with the Phishing protection in N.I.S., the program was completely functioning (which it never was 100% until now) and their is a banner at the top of my I.E. browser that reads "Fraud
Monitoring is on". Could that be what is keeping certain pages from loading ? Google wont load until the second or third attempt so it's not suspicious sites I'm visiting.

What can you tell me about XP SP3 ? I just upgraded my other PC and it seems ok. Are there any issues with that Service Pack that you are aware of before I load it on the machine we just fixed ?

Finally: (you probably get this alot) In your opinion is there a more probable way I received this nasty infection on my machine ? YAHOO CHAT ? PORN SITES ? E-MAIL ? What is your opinion ?

Thank you Dan for everything. I am so grateful for your time as I know it is a commodity. May the computer God's bless you
for your good samaritanism..... James

Let's cleanup some of the tools we used.

Double click on OTMoveIt2.

Click on CleanUp!.

You will receive a prompt that it has finished downloaded a list. Click OK.

After this, it will prompt you to restart your computer. Please restart your computer.

________________

UNINSTALL COMBOFIX

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
  • Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
  • Image
You can also delete any logs we have produced, and empty your Recycle bin.

And just to make sure it doesn't run:

Close all windows and try typing this command directly in and see if ComboFix runs.

Remember to use the " marks and there is a space between exe" and /killall

Start > Run > type "%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe" /killall

If ComboFix runs, please post the log.

let me know when carried out.

Some information regarding sp3 here
We find a majority of infection comes via p2p sites, it can come in numerous ways unbeknown to the user through down loading software from an unknown source, not reading the "EUALA" you don't know what your agreeing to otherwise.
Not having basic security, I will detail some added protection in my final post to you.

Dan

I mistakenly started ComboFix and I'm letting it run its course.... do you want to see the log or was it only important if the program started using your command sequence and AFTER I had uninstalled it ?

I'll proceed with the CleanUp proceedure using OTMoveIt2 proceedure once ComboFix is complete.

If your talking about combofix that is fine as it tells me you now don't have access to it, and it's off the system.
Are you talking of otmoveit2 clean up?
