please help- can't get rid of trojan.vundo

A few days ago, Norton Anti-Virus found this virus on my comp - Trojan.Vundo and it is saved on my computer in C:\WINDOWS\system32\cbxyw.dll. When I click OK on the virus notification box that pops up, it keeps coming back, notifying me that I have a virus, and i can't get the box to go away. Norton told me to go to this website http://securityresponse.symantec.com/av ... vundo.html to get information on how to remove the virus and I followed the instructions, and downloaded the removal tool, FixVundo.exe. However, the program did not find the virus on my computer, and therefore, could not get rid of it, yet Norton keeps telling me I am still infected. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

• Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
• This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
• After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
• Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
• You will first be presented with a warning.
  It should look like this
  

  VundoFix V2.13 by Atri
  By using VundoFix you agree that you are doing so at your own risk
  Press enter to continue....
  
  

• At this point press enter one time.
• Next you will see:
  

  Type in the filepath as instructed by the forum staff
  Then Press Enter, Then F6, Then Enter Again to continue with the fix.

• At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):
  C:\WINDOWS\system32\cbxyw.dll
  
• Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
• Next you will see:
  

  Please type in the second filepath as instructed by the forum staff
  Then Press Enter, Then F6, Then Enter Again to continue with the fix.

• At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):
  C:\WINDOWS\system32\wyxbc.*
  This will be the vundo filename spelt backwards. for example if the vundo dll was vundo.dll you would have the user enter odnuv.*
  
• Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
  
• The fix will run then HijackThis will open.
• In HiJackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

• Pressing any key will cause a "Blue Screen of Death" this is normal, do not worry!
• Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.

Download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

• Empty Recycle Bins
• Delete Cookies
• Delete Prefetch files
• Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Please download Ewido Security Suite, it is a free version of the program.

1. Install ewido security suite
2. When installing the program, under "Additonal Options" uncheck...
   • Install background guard
   • Install scan via context menu
3. Launch ewido, there should now be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
4. The program will now open to the main screen.
5. When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
6. You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files:
   • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
   • Then click on Start Update.
7. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
   (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
8. Close Ewido Security Suite

If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.

Once the updates are installed, do the following:

1. Reboot computer into "Safe Mode" using the "F8" method...
   • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Boot Menu appears
   • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item
2. Once in Safe Mode start Ewido Security Suite
3. Click on scanner. (Note: Do not start any programs or open any windows while Ewido is scanning)
4. Click on Complete System Scan, the scan will now begin.
5. While the scan is in progress you will be promted to clean files, click OK.
6. When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a checkmark in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections", then choose clean and click OK.
7. Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located at the bottom of the screen named Save Report.
8. Click Save Report.
9. Now save the report .txt file to your desktop.
10. Close Ewido Security Suite

Run HijackThis and put a check next to the following lines:

O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {6DD0BC06-4719-4BA3-BEBC-FBAE6A448152} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\cbxyw.dll (file missing)

Go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the following (if present):

My Search Bar
MyWay Speed Bar
My Web Search Bar
Fun Web Products Easy Installer

Run HijackThis and put a check next to the following lines:

Make sure no programs or windows are open and click Fix checked.

Now using Windows Explorer delete the following folder (if present):

C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\

Now reboot and post a new HijackThis log.

Out of the 4 programs, only "MyWay Search Assistant" was there, and I tried to delete it but it said

"Error loading C:\PROGRA~1\MyWaySA\SrchAsDe\1.bin\desrcas.dll. The specified module could not be found".

And the other 3 things were not on the list of programs. I am about to run HiJackThis and fix the items you listed- I'll post my log as soon as I get it.

Hi jess2468,

It looks like you are now all clean. Here are some programs and things I recommend you do to prevent further infections.

1. Remember to always update your system. Visit http://www.windowsupdate.com/ to download the latest updates for your system.

2. Reset System Restore to remove all infected restore points.

Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check turn off System Restore.
Click Apply and then click OK.
Reboot.
Turn on System Restore.
On the Desktop right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Un-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply and then click OK.

3. Download Ad-Aware and Spybot and run them regularly to scan for spyware that you might have on your computer.

4. Download SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard to prevent further infections.

5. Remember to always use an Anti-Virus program. I recommend Kaspersky.

6. Always use a firewall. The Windows firewall is good but Outpost Pro is better. See this page for more info.

7. Download a HOSTS file to prevent you from visiting sites that might infect you with spyware again. I recommend Bluetack's HOSTS file.
