Hi reno

Have you set OpenDNS as your DNS servers?

Hi Shaba

Thank you for your reply.

To be perfectly honest with you, I have absolutely no idea whatsoever!

However, after reading the following link re: OpenDNS, it would appear that, as I own a Dell XPS 710, the second paragraph under 'Conflicts' could be the answer, even though I use Firefox 99% of the time.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenDNS

What do you think, as I do not recollect setting OpenDNS as my DNS server.

TIA

Hi again Shaba

My ISP is Virgin Media: -

http://allyours.virginmedia.com/html/internet/bb_deal.html?buspart=search

Further to my last post, I have noticed that if I am trying to get to a webpage that doesn't exist, I do get redirected to http://guide.opendns.com/ followed by the relevant search criteria details. It doesn't appear to be malicious and, after research, appears to be a trusted website, as per the following screenshot: -

Image

Would it be prudent to 'fix' the 017 entries? At worse, I could always restore a backup?

Naturally, I'll await your advice.

EDIT: 20080514 @ 10.29 GMT

After further investigation, none of the IP addresses in the 017 entries relate to my ISP, namely Virgin Media. They actually relate to the following, after a WHOIS Lookup: -

OrgName: OpenDNS, LLC
OrgID: OPEND-2
Address: 199 Fremont St.
Address: 12th Floor
City: San Francisco
StateProv: CA
PostalCode: 94105
Country: US

NetRange: 208.67.216.0 - 208.67.223.255

Hi again Shaba.

Yes. I am the same. And no. This is the same account as I have always had, as far as I am aware, even whilst I was in training. :)

I used reno whilst I was in training.

I was actually unaware that I had created another account in the name of Jazz. :)

Apologies for the confusion

Hi

I see :)

In the windows control panel. If you are using Windows XP's Category View, select the Network and Internet Connections category otherwise double click on Network Connections. Then right click on your default connection, usually local area connection for cable and dsl, and left click on properties. Click the Networking tab. Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS servers automatically
Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks.
That option might not be available on some systems

Open HijackThis, click do a system scan only and checkmark these:

O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{32E2DEA1-262D-4165-A47C-7389F62A952C}: NameServer = 208.67.222.222,208.67.220.220
O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\Tcpip\..\{32E2DEA1-262D-4165-A47C-7389F62A952C}: NameServer = 208.67.222.222,208.67.220.220
O17 - HKLM\System\CS2\Services\Tcpip\..\{32E2DEA1-262D-4165-A47C-7389F62A952C}: NameServer = 208.67.222.222,208.67.220.220

Close all windows including browser and press fix checked.

Reboot.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log.

Hi again Shaba

Done and done. :) No need to fix the 017 entries, as they have 'disappeared', now. :)

Hi

That's great :)

Below are some tips for the future:

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
  • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
  • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
  • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
  • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
  • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
  • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
  • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
  • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  • Install Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware - Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is a new and powerful anti-malware tool. It is
totally free but for real-time protection you will have to pay a small one-time fee. Tutorial on installing & using this product can be found below:

    Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Setup Guide

    Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Scanning Guide

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety
