Clicked on a Keylogger link on WoW forums.

Unread postby Dreemerz » May 2nd, 2008, 1:14 am

Hi there. Yesterday I was browsing the WoW forums and wasn't paying attention. I ended up clicking on a link that was something like jn.32325.cn/random/picture.jpg. That's not the link of course, but gives you an idea of what it looked like. The link loaded up a picture like normal. I didn't click anywhere on the picture and was on Firefox at the time I clicked. Now I heard Firefox was good at stopping this, but I don't have any plugins for it like NoScript. It's just the default version.

The progams I had running at the time were Spybot Search & Destory, Avast! Anti Virus and ZoneAlarm Firewall. None of them went off with any sort of warning when I clicked the link. Avast! however went off with an alert a few minutes later. I believe it was a trojan called vmain.class. I moved it to the chest though.

I ran Ad-Aware SE, Avast! and Spybot. The only thing that came up on a scan was Avast! I'm still feeling uneasy and went to download another scanner. I heard keyloggers can hide themselves and not all scanners can detect them.

I went and got the free trail version of Kaspersky, which is still scanning. It made me uninstall Avast! and ZoneAlarm. So I no longer have those at the moment. While the scanners did pick up a few things, some were disinfected and others had to be deleted. I'm still worried. I have no clue what to look for to tell if it's a Keylogger. I'm considering taking my computer into bestbuy and having them reformat it at this point.

If I can avoid that, it would be wonderful. Here is my Hijack This! Log. I'm hoping someone could help me get my computer completely clean of this keylogger.

Just a few more notes that might come up. My computer has a few more issues, but nothing that prevents me from using the computer. My computer seems to load up slowly from the login screen. It'll take a while to list the users. I also can't seem to upgrade to SP2 on Windows XP. I try to and it says something about update.inf and cryptographic. It's running though and I've tried fixes, but no luck. At the moment though I'd like to get this keylogger out of my system. It really worries me to know someone is recording my keystrokes to get into my info.

One last note. Is jumbling up passwords a safe way to log into things? I'm guessing the keylogger wants my WoW info. I don't have to type in my username to log into it. As far as jumbling up passwords, here is an example. p1765aD2s2s385w9or7d and then I'd get rid of the stuff that doesn't belong there. Would they still be able to get my info if I did that?

You have a wareout infection were going to deal with that first.

We need to diableTeaTimer as it may interfer with the fix

1) Run Spybot-S&D
2) Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
3) On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
4) Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts
5) Restart your computer.

we will re-enable when done

WAREOUT

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, then make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish. The fix will begin;
follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

At the end of the fix, you may need to restart your computer again.

Post back the contents of the logfile C:\fixwareout\report.txt.

Now lets check some settings on your system.
(2000/XP) Only
In the windows control panel. If you are using Windows XP's Category View, select the Network and Internet Connections category otherwise double click on Network Connections. Then right click on your default connection, usually local area connection for cable and dsl, and left click on properties. Click the Networking tab. Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS servers automatically
Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks.
That option might not be avaiable on some systems.

post the wareout report and a fresh HJt log

Alright. I did everything you said. On the last part however, I found no radio dial, but was able to set it to obtain dns automatically by having it obtain an IP address automatically too. Here is the things you requested.

Optional - VIEWPOINT MANAGER
Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This will change from what we know in 2006 read this article: http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546
Additional info:Here
I suggest you remove the program now. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.
  • Viewpoint
  • Viewpoint Manager
  • Viewpoint Media Player
  • Viewpoint Toolbar
Your call.

___________________

To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint.
Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player.
The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information.
CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.'

You appear to have two firewalls on this system
If you are running kaspersky I believe it has the antivrus and firewall bundled together in the security suite.
If this is the case can you uninstall "Sygate Personal Firewall" via add ad remove programs.

I'm looking into the ip addresses for you so don't worry about those for the time being.

Run HijackThis, select Do a system scan only and place checks against the following entries (if they are still present)

O8 - Extra context menu item: &Viewpoint Search - res://C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Toolbar\ViewBar.dll/CXTSEARCH.HTML
WITH ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED Click on Fix Checked and exit

Update Java Runtime Environment (JRE)

Your JRE is out of date. The current version is Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6.

  1. Click on Start > Control Panel and double click on Add/Remove Programs. Locate J2SE Runtime Environment 6.05 Update 11 and click on Change/Remove to uninstall it.
  2. Repeat for these old versions of JRE:
      J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2
      J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4
      J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
      J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_06
      Java(TM) 6 Update 3
  3. Click here to visit Java's website.
  4. Scroll down to Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6. Click on Download.
  5. Select Windows from the drop-down list for Platform.
  6. Select Multi-language from the drop-down list for Language.
  7. Check (tick) I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement box and click on Continue.
  8. Click on jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe link to download it and save this to a convenient location.
  9. Run this installation to update your Java.

Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.4 needs updating but will give you a link in my all clear post.

post me a fresh HJT log

Okay. I did everything you said, but there was no J2SE Runtime Environment 6.05 Update 11 in my Add/Remove list. I removed the other ones though and updated like you said. There was a Java(TM) 6 Update 5. It wasn't on the list to remove though, so I left it there and updated with the one you mentioned.

Here is my new Hijackthis Log.

Thanks for the quick replies so far! I had one question though. Is there any signs of a keylogger on my computer? I'd really like to be able to log into my games and things safely asap. I'm guessing jumbling up the passwords like this, p1a2s3s4 and then deleting what doesn't belong there wouldn't work right?

Edit -
Just thought you should know since it may be helpful. The Kaspersky firewall keeps saying it's blocking an attack made every once in a while. In the log it says it's from Intrusion.Win.MSSQL.worm.Helkern, source is 59.53.50.35 and Protocol is UDP. I went to Geektools.com and used the Whois tool for the source address. It gave me this.

This can go >> "Java(TM) 6 Update 5"

Ok, your log is looking a lot better now, the 017's are legitimate entries used by Spybot.

I'm not seeing any signs or evidence of a keylogger on your system.
Kaspersky is doing it's job by the look of things and blocking intrusions.
You really need to get updated to sp2 which we will address shortly shortly.

In the meantime Ineed you to check if dns is running, from a command prompt window can you copy and paste this in and you will see some information like my example in the quote box.
I want you to look at the line STATE : 4 RUNNING and tell me if it's running. let me have that Information.

Code: Select all
sc query dnscache

SERVICE_NAME: dnscache
TYPE : 20 WIN32_SHARE_PROCESS
STATE : 4 RUNNING
(STOPPABLE,NOT_PAUSABLE,IGNORES_SHUTDOWN)
WIN32_EXIT_CODE : 0 (0x0)
SERVICE_EXIT_CODE : 0 (0x0)
CHECKPOINT : 0x0
WAIT_HINT : 0x0

SERVICE_NAME : dnscache
TYPE : 20 WIN32_SHARE_PROCESS
STATE : 1 STOPPED
<NOT_STOPPABLE, NOT_PAUSABLE, IGNORES_SHUTDOWN>
WIND32_EXIT_CODE : 0 <0x0>
SERVICE_EXIT_CODE : 0 <0x0>
CHECKPOINT : 0x0
WAIT_HINT : 0x0

Would it be safe to log onto things on my computer then? Or should I hold off on that still?

Alright. I'll hold on until you give me the okay. I'm really itching to get back on my games though. But better safe then sorry I guess.

What should I do about that stopped thing in the dns cache?

copy and paste into a command prompt window

Code: Select all
sc config Dnscache start= demand
sc start Dnscache

Need to wait a while for Windows to start the service. Wait for around 10 to 20 seconds will do.

Then flush the DNS server cache:
Copy and paste into a command prompt window

Code: Select all
ipconfig /flushdns
