Help....hidden icons?

Unread postby dbhoug » April 29th, 2008, 1:57 pm

After installing some software of questionable origin, I find that all of my desktop icons are covered by generic looking "white page" type of icons. The real icons are underneath because I can see them when the desktop loads. Then the generic icons load overtop of the real ones, leaving them barely visible. I can still select and run the apps with the icons, but any new application gets covered. Folder icons and "computer" and "recycle bin" icons do NOT get covered. Any help??

Also, forgot to mention.......did a system restore...no help
ran ccleaner and advanced windows care....no help

Thanks!!!

Hello! :hello2: and welcome to the Malware Removal forums.
I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research so please be patient while I work on your log and I will post back here with any recommendations.
As I am still training, everything that I post to you, must be checked by an Admin or Moderator. Thus, there may be a tiny bit of a delay between posts. While it shouldn't be too long, you can be assured you will get the best possible advice.

  • I will working be on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

You have SpyHunter installed, up until recently this was considered a rogue anti-spyware product due to it's deceptive advertising and trying to exploit the 'Spybot' name in its domains. You can read more about it here:
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_ant ... tm#sh_note

While Enigma have dropped these tactics, Spyhunters detection rates are mediocre at best so as such I recommend you remove SpyHunter via Add/Remove programs on your control panel. An alternative would be Malwarebytes Anti Malware which is free for personal use and has excellent detection rates. I will show you how to download and use it later in the fix.

If you do decide to keep SpyHunter please disable it as it might interfere with the fix.

Step 1:
  • Run HijackThis (by right clicking > Run as Administrator)
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

    F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Media\csrss.exe

  • Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
  • Click on the "Fix Checked" button
  • When completed, close the application and Restart your computer.

Step 2:
  1. Open Start->Computer
  2. Press Alt once to expose the menu bar, then select Tools > Folder Options
  3. Select the View tab.
  4. Scroll down to Hidden files and folders.
  5. Select Show hidden files and folders.
  6. Uncheck (untick) Hide extensions of known file types.
  7. Uncheck (untick) Hide protected operating system files (Recommended).
  8. Click Yes when prompted.
  9. Click OK.
  10. Close My Computer.

Step 3:
Use Windows Explorer to navigate to and delete the following files and folders (if they are present):

Files:
C:\WINDOWS\Media\csrss.exe <<<<< Please make sure you delete csrss.exe from C:\WINDOWS\Media folder only

Now just exit Explorer and empty your Recycle Bin.

Step 4:
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location.
  • The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
  • Post that log back here.

Should you encounter this message:
"c:\program files\malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamext.dll
Unable to register the dll/ocx: RegSvr32 failed with exit code 0x5"
Click on ignore mbamext.dll

Please Note Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware realtime protection module does not currently support Vista x64.

Step 5:
Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan. Please use Internet Explorer as it uses ActiveX.

  1. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  2. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an ActiveX from Kaspersky. Click Yes.
  3. When the downloads have finished, click on Next button.
  4. Click on Scan Settings button.
  5. Select extended under Scan using the following antivirus database:
  6. Check (tick) these boxes under Scan options:
    • Scan Archives
    • Scan Mail Bases
  7. Click OK
  8. Click on My Computer under Please select a target to scan:
  9. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected. Click on Save as text button and save it to your desktop.
  10. If Internet Explorer responds saying the report has been saved to the Temporary Internet Files folder, say Yes to open the folder, then navigate to C -> Users -> (Your username) -> Desktop to locate the report
  11. Copy and paste this log in your next reply.

Step 6:
Run HijackThis (by right clicking > Run as Administrator) do a system scan and in your next reply please post:
  • The online Kaspersky results
  • The Malwarebytes report
  • The new HijackThis log

Also please let me know how your computer is running and whether you found and deleted csrss.exe OK.
