Suspected Malware on my computer.

Unread postby chaz62862 » April 18th, 2008, 1:23 am

Hello, I believe that my computer has some kind of malware or spyware.
I have run McAffe anti-virus software and no viruses are found.
My symptoms? My computer has been starting up slow -- it sometimes takes 5 minutes for the Windows startup screen (the one w/ the blue dots that move from L > R) to complete.
Other times when I click on the "Start" button, then "My Computer" it gets stuck there -- Pressing ctl/alt/del reveals that the program is "not responding.
Other times my external hard drive does the a similar thing and ends up "not responding".
I have downloaded and installed HijackThis. I will wait for some one to help.
Thanks, Eric

Hello and welcome to Malware Removal.

My name is km2357 and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

I will be giving you a series of instructions that need to be followed in the order in which I give them to you.

If for any reason you do not understand an instruction or are just unsure then please do not guess, simply post back with your questions/concerns and we will go through it again.

Please do not start another thread or topic, I will assist you at this thread until we solve your problems.

Lastly the fix may take several attempts and my replies may take some time but I will stick with it if you do the same.

Sorry for the delay in replying. If you still need help, please post a fresh HiJackThis Log and an Uninstall List (instructions forthcoming)

To get a HiJackThis Log, do the following:

  • Start up HiJackThis
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Copy/Paste the log to your next reply please.

Step # 1: Make an uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply.

Step # 1 Update Adobe Acrobat Reader

There is a newer version of Adobe Acrobat Reader available. (See Note below)

  • First, go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall all previous versions.
  • Please go to this link Adobe Acrobat Reader Download Link
  • On the right Untick Adobe Phototshop Album Starter Edition if you do not wish to include this in the installation.
  • Click the Continue button
  • Click Run, and click Run again
  • Next click the Install Now button and follow the on screen prompts

Note: Adobe 8 is a large program and if you prefer a smaller program you can get Foxit 2.0 instead from http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php

Step # 2 Update Java

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

  • The program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.

    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Once finished, save the log to your Desktop as filename KAV.txt

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

In your next post/reply, I need to see the following:

1. Kaspersky results
2. A fresh HiJackThis Log
3. How is your computer doing, any problems?

Use multiple posts if you can't fit everything into one post.

Kaspersky Online ScannerWelcome to the Kaspersky Online Scanner! Use it to
scan your PC for viruses and other malware for free
Warning: if you have installed Kaspersky Online Scanner Pro, please
manually uninstall it using "Add/Remove Programs" before installing this
version! Otherwise this version will not function correctly.

Benefits:

Kaspersky Anti-Virus exceptional detection rates and thorough scanning
Hourly AV database updates available each time the Online Scanner is
launched
Heuristic analysis to detect unknown viruses
Simple installation (just click on a link)

Requirements and limitations:

When using this service for the first time, you have to run with
Administrator privileges in order to install the product. Also, you will
need to download and install files about 400 KB in size followed by 9 MB
of virus definitions.
However, if you use the Online Scanner again, you will only need to
download the files that have been updated since your last scan.
The Online Scanner service offered by Kaspersky Lab uses Microsoft ActiveX
technology. Microsoft ActiveX Technology and the Kaspersky Online Scanner
work only with MS Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher.
We cannot guarantee that the Online Scanner will function correctly if you
are using any other browser or any Internet Explorer extensions (such as
AvantBrowser). If you use a different browser, you can use the Kaspersky
File Scanner to scan individual files.
The free Kaspersky Online Scanner does not scan boot sectors and MBRs, so
it cannot detect malicious code located in these areas.
Please note: The free Kaspersky Online Scanner does not protect against
malicious code, and cannot prevent future infections. It only detects
malware that has already penetrated your computer. We strongly recommend
that you install a full antivirus solution to protect your system.

Privacy statement:

The Kaspersky Online Scanner will collect information about the malicious
programs found on your computer during the scanning process. The
information will be sent to the Kaspersky Virus Lab for statistical
purposes. No personal information about you or specific information about
your system will be collected or transmitted to Kaspersky Lab.

My computer is "better" -- still seems to be slow and not quite back to "normal".
For instance, I can open up "My Computer" and do not get the "Program not responding" message, until
I got into iTunes and clicked on a few songs and then I finally got the "Program not responding" message. Also, my 500 GB Western Digital external hard drive (My Book Premium Edition #WD5000D032) -- where my music & iTunes are kept -- used to be the "L: drive "-- now, after these recent interventions, it has become the "K: drive." Why the change? Seems strange, but don't know if it means anything.

Thanks again for the help.

Those weren't the Kaspersky results, but according to this section from what you posted, nothing malicious was found by Kaspersky:

Total number of scanned objects:113414
Number of viruses found:0
Number of infected objects:0
Number of suspicious objects:0
Duration of the scan process:01:42:15

Your latest HiJackThis log looks to be clean as well. Your problems do not appear to be malware related. They may be software/hardware related.

For instance, I can open up "My Computer" and do not get the "Program not responding" message, until
I got into iTunes and clicked on a few songs and then I finally got the "Program not responding" message.

Does this only happen with iTunes? Or does it happen with other programs? And have your tried uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes to see if that fixes the problem? Also do you have the most uptodate version of iTunes?

I'll have you do one more scan, it'll give me some more info on what is on your computer and if your problem is malware-related or not.

Step # 1: Download and Run Deckard's System Scanner

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.

  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt in your next post/reply.

Hello km2357,

Funny you should ask about reinstalling iTunes -- I did just that last night. Removed it and then downloaded it from the Apple website. Version 7. Doesn't seem to make a difference. It is not only iTunes. I was running Outlook 2003 and it bogged down this evening. The main place that it seems to routinely be a problem is when I choose "My Computer" -- clicking on the desktop icon, clicking the "Start" button and then choosing "My Computer" -- regardless of how I get there the thing freezes up eventually. Also, like I said before, the Western Digital external HD is now the "K: drive". Before (just a day ago it seems), it was the "L: drive" AND, sometimes it does not even show up in the list of drives when I open "My Computer", even though the thing is on. (It is about 3-4 years old and is the one with the concentric illuminated blue cirlce light that surrounds the power button. Sometimes it is a constant blue and other times the blue kind of moves slowly around the circle in sections, if that makes sense...

Anyway, here are the texts of the DSS scan:

Hi Eric.

A couple of your file associations have become corrupted, do the following to fix them:

Make sure that dss.exe is on your Desktop.

Press the Start->Run, copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:
"%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /DAFT

I don't see any signs of malware in the DSS logs, so it looks like more likely than not, your problems are hardware/software related. As my speciality is malware removal, the best option would be for me to give you a few forums to go to where they have hardware/software specialists that can help you fix/find a solution for your problems:

Computer Trouble here: http://forum.computertrouble.co.uk/index.php
or
TechSupportGuy here : http://forums.techguy.org/21-windows-nt-2000-xp/
or
VirtualDr here: http://discussions.virtualdr.com/forumdisplay.php?f=48
or
PCPitStop here : http://forums.pcpitstop.com/index.php?showforum=3

All may require free registration before posting for help.

Whatever one you decide to register at be sure to post a link back to this topic, so whoever helps you can see what has been done already.

Thanks km2357,

I copied and pasted the command as you asked and 2 red items appeared after I clicked "Scan". I checked both boxes and clicked on "Fix". Here is a log of that for what it is worth:

All associations okay!

I will try to contact one of your suggested hardware/software specialists. How do I post a link back to this topic? I see what you mean by not re-inventing the wheel, but am not sure how to "link" back to this exchange that we have had over the past week or so.

Thanks again,

Eric
