Hi, and welcome to malwareremoval forums

I'm dan12, I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Please observe these rules while we work:
  • Perform all actions in the order given.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Stick with it till you're given the all clear.
  • REMEMBER, ABSENCE OF SYMPTOMS DOES NOT MEAN THE INFECTION IS ALL GONE.
If you can do these things, everything should go smoothly.
  • Please note you'll need to have Administrator priviledges to perform the fixes. (XP accounts are Administrator by default)
  • Please let me know if you are using a computer with multiple accounts, as this can affect the instructions given.
It may be helpful to you to print out or take a copy of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

I'm presently looking over your log and hope not to be too long.
Will be back with you as soon as I can.
Thanks dan

Hi, plml84,
I notice your running McAfee as your a\v . You also have Spyware Doctor, is this the complete suite which includes the a\v, as two a\v's on the same system will not play well together.

Optional - VIEWPOINT MANAGER
Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This will change from what we know in 2006 read this article: http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546
Additional info:Here
I suggest you remove the program now. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.
  • Viewpoint
  • Viewpoint Manager
  • Viewpoint Media Player
  • Viewpoint Toolbar
Your call.

___________________

To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint.
Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player.
The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information.
CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.'

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe.
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Please include in your next post:
  • Information regarding your a\v
  • OTMoveIt results

I had tried something from Mcafee support. I downloaded some special scan program SDATxxxx.exe (Can't remember the xxxx now). I ran it in safe mode and it took all day. I'll try a couple of the things you mention, but it may have to wait a few days as I need my PC to finish my income taxes. I still have the error / popup.
I will return!

Will keep the thread open a couple of more days,as we have others that need help also.
There is a set procedure for the fix of which this is the first part.
Regards dan :)

I am back. I am having trouble understanding what to do with the OTMoveIt2

I copied the word purity in the box and clicked the red button.

All that gave in results was

< purity >

OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer - Version 1.0.4.1 log created on 04172008_164729
----------------------------------------------------------------
I then ran SmitfraudFix and got the following rapport.txt file:

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply, along with a new HijackThis log.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Please post the rapport.txt
and a fresh HJT log

I haven't seen the popup since I did the Malwarebyte step. Can you tell if this fixed it?

 I still have had no bad pop ups since the steps we did the other day. Thanks. I did the new steps anyway.
I didn't see an Admin option for the find-a-file and couldn't get that to do anything.
Following is the OTMoveIt2 log:
C:\Documents and Settings\Laura\Application Data\tizupd.bin moved successfully.
C:\Documents and Settings\Laura\Local Settings\Temp\removalfile.bat moved successfully.
C:\Documents and Settings\Matt\Application Data\tizupd.bin moved successfully.
C:\Documents and Settings\Matt\My Documents\Install_AIM.exe moved successfully.
C:\Program Files\Sysfiles\WxBug.EXE moved successfully.

OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer - Version 1.0.4.1 log created on 04202008_074843

I then deleted a number of JRE versions. I didn't see 5.0 Update 11, but I removed 5.0 update 6 and update9, and also Java 6 Update 1, 2, and 3 separately. (Not sure if you recommended this, but I thought that the new upload would replace what I still needed.
Then I installed the JRE 6 update 6.

Just try this for me:
Press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:

cmd /c dir C:\*.* /L /A /B /S|Find "m?config.exe" >> "%userprofile%\desktop\look.txt"

A file called look.txt should appear on your Desktop. Please post the contents of this file.
