I use Mozilla Firefox, but if I ever accidentally open Internet Explorer, I start getting pop-ups. I have already uninstalled Internet Explorer, but for some reason it will still open with some random pop-ups, even if I'm using Mozilla. Even now as I'm trying to write this... I did an Ad-Aware scan and it said to remove the Virtumonde file because that is what was causing my pop-ups.

I did a Hijackthis log and this is what it had to say:

p.s. thanks so much for any help!! i need it!

Hi ak710,

It appears that you have three antivirus programs running - Symantec, AVG and Avast!. Running one antivirus program is essential, but having two or more can cause conflicts, slow your system down and even cause stability problems without improving your security. You should use just one antivirus program and if you want an "2nd opinion", use an online scanner like Kaspersky's.

If you have more than one antivirus program installed, then before proceeding, please remove one of them.
Please make sure you choose one currently capable of receiving updates, because an antivirus program without updates cannot protect your system effectively. If you have any problems, please stop and let me know.

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your reply

Once complete, please post both DSS logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as DSS produces one for you.

Hi ak710,

It looks like you now have no antivirus program running at all. I'm very sorry if my instructions weren't clear, but it's important to have one antivirus program running. Two or more together is a problem, but one is essential.
You could choose AVG or Avast which you had installed previously, another good free package is Antivir available here:
Antivir: http://www.free-av.com/

Please ensure you have one antivirus program installed before continuing, if you have any problems please let me know.

Next, please download and run ComboFix. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you, please post the C:\ComboFix.txt report in your next response along with a new HijackThis log.

Hi ak710,

Please open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, look down the list for these items and remove them:
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
Java(TM) 6 Update 2
These are out of date and now a security risk, you can get the latest update (version 6 update 5) from here

You have Viewpoint Media Player installed on your system. This program is not malware but it is foistware in that it is usually installed without the user's knowledge or approval, and for this reason I recommend you remove it. If you actually use this program, I recommend you try using safe and free alternatives such as VLC Media Player.
To remove, open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs find Viewpoint Media Player and select Remove

You have LimeWire, a P2P file sharing program installed on your computer. This program does not come bundled with malware as some similar programs do, but peer-to-peer file sharing networks are one of the biggest sources of malware we see. Anything downloaded from them cannot be trusted to be clean, because even if the file appears to be what it claims to be, it can have malware embedded in it.
I recommend you remove it, but of course the choice is yours.
You can remove Limewire via Add/Remove Programs.

Check that ComboFix.exe is on your Desktop
  • Then open Notepad: press Start->Run, type notepad and click OK
  • Copy/paste the contents of the below code box into Notepad:
    Code: Select all
    File::
    C:\Program Files\B.ico
    C:\Program Files\A.ico
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\mlnmp.bak2
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\mlnmp.ini2
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\egwtelve.dll
    Registry::
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\~\Browser Helper Objects\{F7A4426D-1600-4163-9BB5-5477C9E2976B}]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon\notify\hggfdcb]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon\notify\xazmxner]
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ShellExecuteHooks]
    "{86882CA4-BE70-4BCE-AEA5-CF40EB8E0BC3}"=-
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\ac2d0d62]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\Host Process]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\runner1]
  • Save this to your Desktop as CFScript.

    Image
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
Note: Do not click ComboFix's window while it's running - it may cause it to stall!

Once complete, please post the new ComboFix report and a new HijackThis log.

Hi ak710,

Next, please do an online scan with Kaspersky:
Open Kaspersky Online Scanner in Internet Explorer using this link:
http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html
  • Click Accept and the web scanner will begin to load
  • If a yellow warning bar appears at the top of the browser, click it and choose Install ActiveX Control
  • You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, click Install
  • If you are prompted about another ActiveX control called Kaspersky Online Scanner GUI part then allow it to be installed also.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on Next and then Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      Extended
    • Scan Options:
      Scan Archives
      Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
      Select My Computer
  • The program will start to scan your system.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on the Save Report As... button, change Save as type: to Text file and save the file to your desktop as Kaspersky.txt
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

Once complete, please post the Kaspersky report and a new HijackThis log. Also, let me know how your computer is running.

sorry i've been really busy with my new term of school that just started so i haven't been on my computer much to do the last bit you told me to do. (i'm at the library at my school right now)

I'll do that stuff tonight and repost my log. Oh and my computer's been running really smoothly lately. It doesn't take as long to boot up, I'm guess it has to do with all the Anti-virus programs I had running. I'm just using AVG because it works the best with finding the viruses and trojans that still find their ways to computer.

If I'm on the internet (using Mozilla) I will still get random pop-ups from Internet Explorer, even though I have uninstalled it. I actually had to reinstall it last week to use one of the programs you asked me to use because I guess it doesn't run well with Mozilla.

Sorry again for the delay. I'll finish it up tonight and repost as soon as I get out of school today. Thanks also for all your help. I really needed it!!!

Hi ak710,

Make hidden/system files and folders visible:
Click Start -> My Computer
Select the Tools menu, click Folder Options and select the View tab
Under the Hidden files and folders heading SELECT Show hidden files and folders
UNCHECK the Hide extensions for known file types option
UNCHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option
Click Yes to confirm and press OK

Use Windows Explorer (right-click Start, select Explore) to find and delete the following file:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dgytuyyn.dll
If you have trouble finding or deleting it, please let me know in your next response.

Next, please download F-Secure Blacklight to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Double click fsbl.exe to run it, choose I accept the agreement then press Scan
  • It will create the fsbl-xxxxxxx.log on your desktop containing a list of all items found.
  • Do not choose to rename any because legitimate items can also be present.
  • Exit Blacklight and post the contents of the log in your next reply.

Once complete, please post the Blacklight report and a new HijackThis log.
Also let me know how your computer is running, and if you are still getting popups, what are the popups advertising?

Yes I'm here...

I deleted that file and saved that program to my computer and ran it. But when I did it, it didn't save a log file or maybe I just didn't see that option...

My computer seems to be running well too. No pop ups lately either.

I'll repost with a log file as soon as i can.

Hi ak710,

The Blacklight log should be in the same place as the program file, if you can't find it please move the program file to your Desktop and try scanning with it again.
