No access to my control panel?!?

Unread postby svacek » April 4th, 2008, 1:31 am

Below is my logfile. I've tried installing new programs as well as deleting some old programs, but I apparently have no access to my control panel. I'm also getting two popups reading:
"Error Loading C:\PROGRA~1\NewDotNet\newdotnet6_38.dll The specified module could not be found ... "
"Warning! Potential Spyware Operation! Your computer is making unauthorised copies of your system and Internet files. Run full scan now to pervent any unathorized access to your files! Click YES to download spyware remover ... "

Although I never clicked yes for the second one on purpose, while typing a paper and hitting the enter key as it popped up, I was taken to the site which was extremely hard to get out of.

In addition, whenever I start up my computer and log into the internet and check my history, there are sites on there I've never been to that are porn sites. Is it possible for that to happen when my computer hasn't been in use by anyone in our household? I mean, I'm saying we went out of town for the weekend and upon returning we checked my history and there were two pornsites in my history for the day and we had just gotten home. Since then, those sites pop up almost everyday in my history. I'm thinking I'm going to have to just do a complete wipe of my hard drive and just reinstall my OS, which is okay and I don't mind having to do. We have a second computer so it's not like we'll be without a computer here at home. I'd rather not have to go weeks trying to clean up my computer and instead would rather just do a hard drive wipe if it's going to take a lot of time. My boyfriend and I are in school, so it's easier to have two computers.

Hello, and welcome to the forum.

My name is Simon V., and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

You're infected pretty badly, but it shouldn't be necessary to format your computer.

Step 1

Please download and install CCleaner.

Open CCleaner. On the Windows tab, leave the default options alone.

  • On the Applications tab, check (tick) all the boxes except Saved Form Information. This will remove all your saved passwords if you leave this box checked.
  • Click on the Run Cleaner button at the bottom right hand corner.
  • When the cleaner has completed, click Tools in the Left Pane.
  • Verify that Uninstall is highlighted in color, or click on it.
  • In the lower right, click Save to Text File.
  • Pull down the arrow at the top of the Save dialog and choose Desktop as the location.
  • You can leave the filename as install.txt.
  • Click Save, then exit Ccleaner.

Step 2

Print these instructions or copy them to Notepad and save it to your desktop, as you won't be able to access internet in Safe Mode.

Please download SDFix and save it to your desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive% (Drive that contains the Windows directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please reboot into Safe Mode. To do this, go to Start > Turn off Computer, and select Restart. Rapidly tap F8 just before Windows starts to load. In the menu that appears, select Safe Mode (Without Networking)

Log in to your usual account.

Once in Safe Mode, do the following:

Open the extracted SDFix folder and double-click RunThis.bat to start the script.

  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any trojan services and registry entries that it finds, then prompt you to press any key to reboot; press any key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts SDFix will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished. Press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load, the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt (Report.txt will also be copied to clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).

Step 3

Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofi ... e-combofix

Post the log from ComboFix (C:\Combofix.txt) when you've accomplished that, along with a new HijackThis log, the SDFix report (C:\SDFix\Report.txt) and the CCleaner Uninstall List (install.txt).

Thank you Simon! I'm at work right now, so I'll be doing this first thing when I get home. Once I have this completed and/or my computer is no longer sick, what do you recommend to be the best software to install to prevent this in the future? Also, I have one more question: before doing the hijackthis log, I tried to boot my computer in safe mode and was unable to do so. Any suggestions?

I'll give you some tips to keep your computer clean in the future once we're done with the cleaning process.

Run this program before running SDFix to fix your safe mode problem -

Please download SafeBootKeyRepair.exe from Tech Support Forum and save it to your desktop.

  • Double click on SafeBootKeyRepair.exe to run it.
  • Notepad will open shortly aftewards; post the contents of that log in your next reply, along with the other logs requested.

Hi again. I downloaded and ran the safebootkeyrepair.exe and have restarted my computer in safe mode. I'm just waiting for SDFix to finish...

Okay, so it's been over four hours now since I started the ComboFix scan, and it's still stuck only a few seconds into the actual scan....I followed all instructions on the bleepingcomputer.com site for running the software. What should I do? I haven't touched the computer since I started the scan...

Hi :)

That shouldn't happen. Please open your Task Manager by pressing Ctrl + Alt + Del at the same time. Click on the Processes tab, and terminate any of the following processes (when found) -

  • findstr
  • find
  • sed
  • swreg

Combofix should continue after that. If it doesn't, please post back to me.

Re: No access to my control panel?!?

Unread postby Simon V. » April 6th, 2008, 3:57 pm

Hi :)

I understand that downloading music and other files may be important to you; however, the Peer-to-Peer programs that you are using to do that, even if they are not infected with malware, will bring malware into your system. Therefore, the chances of you becoming infected again are very high. This obviously can result in disabling your computer and could even lead to someone stealing sensitive personal data from your computer. Beyond the inconvenience this causes you, these programs also tend to use your computer as a server to spread more infection all over the internet, so your computer becomes a part of the malware problem.

Remember that no matter how clean the program you're using for Peer-to-Peer filesharing may be, it offers no guarantees regarding the cleanliness of files you may choose to download. All files available via Peer-to-Peer filesharing carry a high risk, particularly those that offer you illegitimate methods of using legitimate software programs without paying for them. Any program or file that offers you the ability to access non-freeware programs at no cost, e.g., pirated software and/or cracks/key generators for gaining access to legitimate software, is 100% guaranteed to contain malware.

Here is some information that looks at the rates of infection:

http://www.benedelman.org/spyware/p2p/

With that being said, I recommend that you remove the following Peer-to-Peer program(s):

(Click on Start, then Control Panel. Double click on Add or Remove Programs)

LimeWire 4.14.5

Also remove the following programs -

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 3
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
My Web Search (Webfetti)
Quick! Toolbar

Then download and install Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 5.

Hi :)

Open HijackThis, perform a scan and put a check next to the following items (if present):

O16 - DPF: {1D6711C8-7154-40BB-8380-3DEA45B69CBF} -
O16 - DPF: {DBA230D1-8467-4e69-987E-5FAE815A3B45} -

Close all programs except HijackThis and click on Fix checked.

Hi Simon! I completed everything you requested in your last post. My computer has been running much better! I'm no longer getting any error codes. The only thing that's been popping up is a certificate? It reads as follows:

A new certificate has arrived for channel 'Updates from HP'. It will be used to digitally sign the channel's contents. Do you wish to accept this certificate?

I haven't accepted the certificate because on the "certificate" itself is says it expires March 25, 2005.

Other than this, it's been running very well.

Does that certificate pop up when you are surfing the net, or every time you start up your computer?

It seems to only pop up once while I am on the internet. It's a backweb security notice. Is this part of an infection? I've never seen it the entire time I've had my computer.
