search2k.net problem

Unread postby quilljar » September 23rd, 2005, 6:48 am

I have pop-ups from search2k website and a yellow warning notice on the task bar constantly telling me that I am riddled with spyware, and do want Adult friend finder. The only spyware that I have is this damn warning trying to get me to buy PS Guard and some other crap. Can you help please?

Hello,

I see both AVG and Avast! On your computer.
This can result in the opposie that you want from it, please remove one of them and reboot after removal.

Then start with this fix.

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  1. Restart your computer
  2. After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  3. Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  4. Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

***
Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
  • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
  • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked!
Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.
I would also like youto post an uninstall-list, please do as followed:

  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click on the configure button on the bottom right
  • Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
  • Click on the Box that says "Uninstall Manager"
  • Click on the button "Save list"
  • Copy and past the List from notepad into your post

Go to
Start
Control Panel

Switch to classic view
Click Java Plug-in (Java console)

Go to the Cache Tab
And click clear
Close the opened screens again.

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
    * Click Start.
    * Open My Computer.
    * Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    * Select the View Tab.
    * Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
    * Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    * Click Yes to confirm.
    * Click OK.

Now before doing anything else i want you to do something for me.
I need you to upload a file for analysis which was not removed from your computer.
It’s this file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\msvol.tlb

Please go to this site and read the instructions.

Then go *here*
to open a new topic and upload the file

Please include a link to this topic

If you did that please tell me so we can continue the fix.

*Please download the Killbox.
*In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download
.

* Save it to your desktop.
*But don’t use it yet.

***
Go to
Start
Control Panel
Add/remove programs

Serach in the list for
Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.3 ( we will download a newer version later on.)
select it by highlighting it and click the change remove button.
Repeat that for
XoftSpy
this porgram is not so well known

***
Reboot your machine in Safe Mode (just click onto F8 key the same moment the pc is starting, before the MS Windows flag screen), choose to start the computer in safe mode and press Enter

***
now go to this folder
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files.... and remove everything in it.

***
Double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. Place the following lines (complete paths) in bold in the "Full Path of File to Delete" box in Killbox, and click the red button with the white X on it after each
C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.ftp

C:\WINDOWS\system32\msvol.tlb
For these file, put a mark next to "Delete on Reboot". Copy and paste each file into the file name box, then click the red button with the X after each. It will ask you if you want to reboot each time you click it, answer NO until after you've pasted the last file name, at which time you should answer Yes.
Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

After the reboot you download
Spybot S&D 1.4 from the following link
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

In Windows/ Program Files Downloaded, three files would not delete. But I notice they have gone now!

All seems very well on my machine now. I am very grateful for your time and trouble. I do not know whether you want more work, but as a part-time PC doctor for beginners in my neighbourhood, I am already recommending your services. You saw how many antispy programs I was already using and I still had over 140 nasties on my computer.
Many thanks

It was a pleasure helping you.

You did a great job too!

Please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  1. Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

    Managing Windows Millenium System Restore

    or

    Windows XP System Restore Guide

Renable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

  2. Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    2. Click once on the Security tab
    3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
      1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      2. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      3. Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

  3. Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  4. Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  5. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  6. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  7. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  8. Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  9. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  10. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Glad I was able to help.

Good Advice

Unread postby quilljar » September 26th, 2005, 5:10 pm

Thank-you for your good advice. I have to say that I regularly carried out all of your suggestions and even update AVG every day. I use the Microsoft beta spyware program and the BTYahoo one as well. Nevertheless, a lot got through did it not?
The one new program I have noted and downloaded is 'Spywareblaster'.
Thanks for that. I will use it from now on.
Is it worth paying for Ewido do you think?

Well Ewido is very good in picking up things.
It does take some resources, so you need to see if it doesn't slow your system too much.
But let's take myself as an example i can do without Ewido too.
You can have all great tools but the main tool is still You
You decide where to surf and what to download.
But i think the biggest difference is still using another browser then IE.
I'm using the Mozilla Suite
but only FireFox is also good.
These are mine preferences and will not gaurantee you from never getting anything unwanted, but it will sure help.

I wish you all the best...
