Looks like malware very slow help please

Hi, I'm running XP SP2 with IE7 ( version 7.0.5730.11IC). Sorry to be wordy, hate to leave anything out. We have been experiencing very slow start up times for quite a while and I usually don't use this computer so I was ignoring it. I got around to checking stuff out and downloaded WinPatrol and disabled 22 startup programs reducing the startup time from over 9 minutes to about 3. Thats great and all but I Googled a few entries that I didn't recognize and they looked malicious to me. So as to not mask anything I will re enable all startups prior to any HJT's unless told other wise. Start up time is not the only issue, also slow browsing, popups, slow maneuvering around most programs and very glitchey mouse most of which is alot better with only 4 start up items. WinPatrol also shows a ton of BHO's and after asking all toolbars can be done away with. Here is the HJT, Thank you.

There is quite a bit to do here. It will take several posts, but you can do it.

Disable WinPatrol
- Right Click the 'Scotty Dog' icon in the system tray
- Click Options
- At the bottom of the options page, Uncheck Automatically Run WinPatrol When Computer Starts
-Click the X to end program.
- Right Click the 'Scotty Dog' icon in the system tray again
- Click Exit Program
WinPatrol is now disabled and will not start at bootup.

Disable SpywareGuard
- Right Click the running icon of Spywareguard to open the program.
- Then go to Menu, File, Exit.
- Confirm the program is closed.
(Reverse this process after your malware removal is complete).
- Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect before running HJT.

Stop, Disable and Delete A Service
Open Notepad, paste the following code box contents into the text.

Code: Select all

sc stop "OneStep Search Service"
sc config "OneStep Search Service" start= disabled 
sc delete "OneStep Search Service"

Use Notepad's File, Save As to save it to your desktop as File type All Files (not as text file or it won't work), and file name FixSvc.bat
Exit Notepad and double click on FixSvc.bat
A Command window will flash on and off.

REBOOT your machine. Sign in to your usual account.

Run a HiJackThis Scan Only, check the following lines, and choose Fix Checked.

• Download CCleaner from here . Choose the Slim version.
• Double click on ccsetupXXX_slim.exe to start the installation of CCleaner. (XXX is the version number)
• Click OK
• Click Next
• Click I agree
• Click Next
• Click Install
• Once the installation has finished, click Finish

Set Options in CCleaner and run Cleaning Scan.
Open CCleaner if it's not already running.
( Do not use the Registry block to clean anything with this program. It is for experts only and it is risky).

• Select Cleaner Settings.
  Check Internet Explorer, Windows Explorer, and System so that all items are checked. In the Advanced section, have a check only on Old PreFetch Data.
• Click on the Options block on the left. Select Advanced.
  Uncheck Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours.
• Set Cookie Retention.
  Click on the Options block on the left, then choose Cookies.
  Under the Cookies to delete pane, highlight any cookies you would like to retain permanently (those companies or sites with which you regularly visit or do business), and click the right arrow > to move them to the Cookies to keep pane.
• Run Cleaning Scan. Click on the Cleaner block on the left. Choose the Windows tab.
  Click the Run Cleaner button. This process could take a while. When CCleaner shows how much has been removed, cleaning is finished.

Retrieve the Installed Programs List from CCleaner
Open CCleaner if it's not already running.
In the Left Pane, click Tools
Verify that Uninstall is highlighted in color, or click on it.
In the lower Right, click Save to Text File.
Pull down the arrow at the top of the Save dialog and choose Desktop as the location.
You can leave the filename as install.txt
Click Save
Exit CCleaner by clicking on the X button in the upper right of the CCleaner window.

Please post the contents of CCleaner's install.txt and tell me how things went.
It appears that Symantec (Norton) Antivirus was on the machine at one time, but has been removed. Please tell me if that is correct.

Thanks for the vote of confidence. If I'm jumping ahead here just smack my hand. Should WinPatrol stay turned off after repair? Both of my systems are running this that is why I ask. I disabled WinPatrol and SpywareGuard. Then performed the stop disable and delete (do i still need that on my desktop or are we done with that?). I rebooted and ran HiJack scan and fixed all lines you noted except the last line

This entry did not exist on my scan this time. I copied the scan and will include that text.
While in search of C;\Program Files\OneStepSearch\ I got an Avast warning and allowed Avast to delete the entry then once I found the file, deleted that. Then ran CCleaner per your instructions, I ran the cleaner 3x in a row and the second time it still came up with about a page of stuff, on the 3rd try it was clean.

( Do not use the Registry block to clean anything with this program. It is for experts only and it is risky).

DOH is that bad I have done that before on my laptop (some people can't leave anything alone I wonder if that has anything to do with the issues I have on that). Then I retrieved the installed programs list.
Please let me know if I missed something. I will post the CCleaner installed program log first since that is the one you requested and also include a new HJT so you can see my 023 isn't there. Thank you for your time.

We just need to have Winpatol and SpywareGuard disabled while we are changing things. They can be re-enabled when we are done.

Remove Program(s) with CCleaner
Open CCleaner. In the Left Pane, click Tools. Verify that Uninstall is highlighted in color, or click on it.
Click and Highlight the Following Programs, one at a time, and click the Run Uninstaller button for each one.
Wait for completion of each one before highlighting and Uninstalling the next.

To completely remove Norton Antivirus, Download and Run the Norton Removal Tool for your version of Windows.

Run MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware
Please download the Installer and save to your desktop.

• Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
• At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to both Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
• If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
• Once the program has loaded, select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
• When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
• Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
• When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location, and post the contents in your reply.

  The logs are named by date stamp

I am performing the tasks now. I'm sure there will not be an answer as I am removing things but for future reference, when I am removing a bunch of things as in the first set of instructions on the last post is is it necessary to reboot inbetween every uninstall or can the reboot wait till all have finished. At 10 minutes a crack for reboot I'm getting a little tired .

We can remove a lot of programs from starting automatically. This will make the machine faster on boot.
Removing a program from startup wll not Uninstall the program. It just means you have to use the Start, All Programs list to start it up.
So please tell me which of these do you use all the time, and which you don't use at all?

You have Google, Yahoo and AOL Toolbars on the machine. Do you use them all?
Most toolbars are more convenient for the purveyor than for the user.
I would uninstall the Yahoo toolbar if you don't use it much. The Google toolbar is OK if you don't create any buttons.

Because you are on AOL, you are probably stuck with AOL toolbar, RealPlayer and Quicktime update notifications, and if you're not careful it will install Viewpooint manager as well.

Do you just plug a camera into a dock or cable to offload pictures, or do you take out the SD card and plug it into a USB adapter ?

Good morning askey127,
Before we start I have a few questions. First we both also hate easy share and wait till boot is finished and the first thing we do is shut down easy share. I don't use it at all but my girlfriend is concerned first that if I delete it she will loose her pictures that are on there and second that she will not be able to plug her camera in and upload pics because her camera is a kodak. This is her computer and other than internet the only thing it is used for is the million or so pictures she takes, this is very important to her. She does use a cable not a card or dock. If we can make it so we don't loose any pictures or ability to load them we would like easy share to go away. If she doesn't like XnView we can always reload easyshare and just make it not auto start. We never used adobe photoshop or simple star. She just bought a ZEN so I don't know if that is ever used yet.
We will go ahead and delete Adobe Reader and install Foxit while waiting. She would like the AOL tool bar (ick) so we can delete the others. Also I can't make the default search anything other than Ask.com and I'm not a big fan. As far as AOL usage we used to use it for dial up and that may be what you are seeing. Currently we have another broadband provider and AOL is used as a home page and also used for E-mail, radio and sometimes messenger. That said anything AOL we could get rid of would be alright by me (dialers, autorun updates etc.) and if we can make it so we are not stuck with the stuff you said we were stuck with lets make that go away too.

Your Internet Explorer is showing MSN Live as the default search.
Is ask.com coming from AOL?
Ask.com is an adware peddler - associated with IAC software, successor to AskJeeves.
All those adware things detected and removed by Malwarebytes Antispyware came from Ask.com (MyWebSearch is adware from Ask.com)

How about we stop EasyShare from autostarting. That means she will have to use Start, All programs to open Easyshare before uploading oictures from her camera.
You can still use XnView.

Bear with me I'm typing on one computer while doing fixes on the other so I'm just typing as I see something new. First the Realplayer message center is popping up at will. The default search being Ask has been fixed by the previous removals (I wasn't aware that happened till you were surprised it was still there) AOL uses a google search if I'm not mistaken. It's listed as AOL as default and now when searching the results come up as AOL search enhanced by Google, not Ask anymore, glad thats gone.
On to your instructions, In CCleaner there is not an entry for Creative ZEN media explorer. There is Creative PC-Cam Center Lite, Creative System Information, Creative WebCam Monitor, Creative WebCam NX Driver (1.02.01.0827), Creative WebCam NX User's guide (English), and Creative ZEN. Those all relate to the PC-Cam except for the last one if I'm not mistaken and if I deleted the last one I think that would take remove all the ZEN software so I'll wait for confirmation. There also is not a Simple Star PhotoShow Media Manager or MyWebSearch. I don't want to go on to step 2 unless told to as you might be expecting something to happen before I do the HJT removals. I did rerun a HJT to make sure all the lines you suggested for removal were there and they are.........or instead of typing all day I could just paste the logs... here is the CCleaner uninstall log.

Then, if you don't use it all the time, I would get rid of RealPlayer by uninstalling it.

Hi askey127,
Startup is looking alot better, about 4 minutes till we are fully up and functional as opposed to the previous 9+. I fixed all HJT items from previous post, removed Adobe photo and Pdf and installed XNview and Foxit instead. Also removed Realplayer. The only unwanted startups (that I can see in task manager bar) are napster, sync-manager, and there is an AOL connection available icon that I don't think is necessary on startup. There is also Control Center 3 that is part of the Brother software for our printer. That is terribly slow, the last to startup, and I don't think that is a necessary startup either. We don't use the scanner or fax very often.
I opened up WinPatrol and the things that are listed to startup that I had prevously checked to not start up are as follows.. nwiz.exe/install (for multiple monitors right?), NvMcTray.dll(quick access to graphics settings i think),... , pttask.exe-at..., brctrcen.exe/..., BrStDvPt.exe, IndexSearch.exe, AOLSoftware...(title HostManager), pptd40nt.exe, BrMfcWnd.exe, and CTSyncU.exe. Looks like this printer came with a fat bundle of stuff I don't really need on startup.

Reset Options in CCleaner for Regular Use.
Open CCleaner if it's not already running.

• Select Cleaner Settings.
  Check Internet Explorer, Windows Explorer, and System so that all items are checked. Then under Internet Explorer, Uncheck "History". In the Advanced section, have a check only on Old PreFetch Data.
• Click on the Options block on the left. Select Advanced.
  Check Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours.
• Set CCleaner to Run When Computer Starts. Click on the Options block on the left, then choose Settings. Check Run Ccleaner when computer starts.

Exit CCleaner by clicking on the X button in the upper right of the CCleaner window.

Remove log items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis.
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:

This line can be checked:

This can be checked. napster can be started manually if necessary:

This one can be checked if you don't need to synchronize the music files between your PC and your music (mp3) player:

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.

You can stop a few others (printer items) with Winpatrol, but I would go slowly.
I don't think you have any malware on your system at this point. There is probably not much more I can offer.
