Hi, and welcome to malwareremoval forums

I'm dan12, I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Please observe these rules while we work:
  • Perform all actions in the order given.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Stick with it till you're given the all clear.
  • REMEMBER, ABSENCE OF SYMPTOMS DOES NOT MEAN THE INFECTION IS ALL GONE.
If you can do these things, everything should go smoothly.
  • Please note you'll need to have Administrator priviledges to perform the fixes. (XP accounts are Administrator by default)
  • Please let me know if you are using a computer with multiple accounts, as this can affect the instructions given.
It may be helpful to you to print out or take a copy of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

I'm presently looking over your log and hope not to be too long.
Will be back with you as soon as I can.
Thanks dan

Hi,firstly can you create a folder on your desktop and name it "HJT" then locate:C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\HijackThis.exe
then copy and paste "HijackThis.exe" into the folder you created on the desktop.
We do this to assist should things not go to plan and HJT will create a backup but it has to have it's own folder

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe.
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

please post back with: text file and a new highjackthis log.

Re: pop-ups that won't go away

Unread postby dan12 » March 22nd, 2008, 9:34 pm

Hi, Charles,
I need you to create a folder on your desktop and name it "HJT" then locate:C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\HijackThis.exe
then copy and paste "HijackThis.exe" into the folder you created on the desktop.
We do this to assist should things not go to plan and HJT will create a backup but it has to have it's own folder.
Do this before running next stage of fix
_______________

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply, along with a new HijackThis log.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Re: pop-ups that won't go away

Unread postby dan12 » March 25th, 2008, 4:44 pm

I'm seeing signs of Norton and AVG7 on your system. You can't run two a\v's on the same system they will fight for resources and you will get slowdowns.
Let me know which you decide to keep amd I will assist you with the uninstall.

You forgot this from my last post:
I need you to create a folder on your desktop and name it "HJT" then locate:C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\HijackThis.exe
then copy and paste "HijackThis.exe" into the folder you created on the desktop.
We do this to assist should things not go to plan and HJT will create a backup but it has to have it's own folder.
Do this before running next stage of fix

---------------------

Open notepad and copy and paste next bold in it:

Code: Select all
regedit /e peek1.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg"
regedit /e peek2.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupfolder"
type peek1.txt >> startup.txt
type peek2.txt >> startup.txt
del peek*.txt
start notepad startup.txt

Save this as look.bat , choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.
This is how the batch should look after you created it.
Doubleclick on look.bat and post the contents of it in your next reply.
_______________

Please note! The HijackThis O6 section corresponds to an Administrative lock down for changing the options or the homepage in Internet explorer by changing certain settings in the registry.
This entry would legitimately show if an administrator set the restriction on purpose or if the user utilized Spybot S&D's Home Page and Option Lock down features in the Mode ->Advanced Mode -> Tools -> IE Tweaks section. (Or there could be other similar tools with similar options/functions.
Are you the administrator and did you set the restriction? If you didn't, then you can fix the following two entries.

Run HijackThis, select Do a system scan only and place checks against the following entries (if they are still present)

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present

WITH ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED Click on Fix Checked and exit

TotalScan
Your Antivirus and/or Antispyware may give a warning during the scan. This is perfectly normal
Please go to this site Link >> TotalScan << LINK
  • Under Scan Now click the Full Scan button
  • Follow the prompts to install the Active X if necessary
  • Go and make a cup of tea/coffee/beverage of your choice and watch some TV :)
  • When the scan is finished, a report will be generated
  • Next to Scan Details click the small Save button and save the report to your desktop.
  • Please post the report in your reply.
Please include in your next post:
  • Total scan log
  • look.bat text
  • New highjackthis log
  • Let me know which a/v your going to keep

Thanks dan

Dan,

Computer came with Norton, thought I got rid of it, apparently not. I do not want it, I do want to keep the AVG.

I did create the HJT folder on the desktop and put a copy of the highjackthis.exe file in it, just forgot to tell you.

Below are the three items you requested.

Thanks again for all your hard work on cleaning up my computer.

Charles

Dan,

Ran the Norton uninstall. Below is the highjackthis log.

Pop-ups are gone. Thanks.

If you have any recommendations for technical assistance for making my hp printer run that would be great. Printer worked fine with my laptop, got this new computer and it won't run it. Says it does, printer even thinks it is printing, but nothing ever comes out. Have researched the issue on web, seems to be a XP, HP, USB (Printer is connected to computer via usb cable) issue. Apparently the three do not work together so good. Can't get any good info out of HP.

Thanks again for all your help.

Charles

Re: pop-ups that won't go away

Unread postby dan12 » March 28th, 2008, 10:37 pm

Hi, Charles,
Sorry for slight delay.
As you don't have norton now, we need to install a firewall.
we only want the one firewall!

As the term conveys, a firewall is an extra layer of security installed onto computers, which restricts access to systems from the outside world. Firewalls protect against hackers and malicious intruders. I want you to download a free firewall NOW from one of these excellent vendors:

There are several possible reasons for the Firewall not showing.
  1. You are using Windows Firewall. This is not recommended as it will only stop incoming material. It permits all outgoing traffic.
  2. You are using a hardware firewall. It should be complemented with a Third Party Software Firewall
  3. You have a firewall, but you disabled it. Please re-enable it.
  4. You don't have a firewall at all.

If you don't have a third party firewall, please get ONE firewall and install it. Restart the computer for changes to take effect.

Online Armor
Comodo Personal Firewall

Please post back a new HijackThis log after installing the firewall.

Re: pop-ups that won't go away

Your Java is out of date Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 5.
  • Scroll down to where it says " Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 5".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.
post me a new HJT log when done.

Dan,

Updated the Java Runtime Environment. When removing old Java's there were two I did not remove because the didn't specifically say "java runtime environment" in the title. The two were Java update 2 and java update 3. Do I need to remove them as well.

Below is the hjt log.

Thanks,
Charles
