Recently my FFXI Online account has been getting hacked repeatedly, and i believe a key logger is to blame. As this is connected to my credit card, (similar to WoW), I would like this taken care of. Thank you for any help

Hello callitsleep89,

I am turtledove,
Welcome to the forum :)

I will be glad to help you with your computer problems.
HijackThis logs take awhile to research. Please be patient with me. I know that you want your problems solved quickly, and I will work hard to help you.

As an Undergraduate, my posts will be checked first by An Admin or Moderator. Please be patient, I'll post a fix soon.

Please observe these rules while we work:
1. If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
2. Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic. Please stay at one forum for help.
3. Please continue reading posts until I give the All Clear. It is important to note this, as a clean looking HijackThis is not always a sign your system is clean.

If you can do these things, everything should go smoothly.
*Please do not run any fixes on your own, as they may interfere with our work.
*If you are going to be busy and unable to post for more than 5 days please post in this thread so we know and do not close this thread.

Thanks for your patience!

Hi callitsleep89,

First, are you running a Norton Security Suite that is current and updated, and does it include a Firewall?

If you have NO Firewall please install one only. Here are a couple which are free:

Tutorial about Firewalls can be found here
Please install ONE before proceeding.
-----

Disable Spybot's TeaTimer. This is a two step process.

Spybot S&D's tea timer normally provides real-time protection from spyware, however it may interfere with what we need to do. We will disable it until the machine is clean when it can be re-enabled.

First step:
  • Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • If you have the new version 1.5, Click once on Resident Protection, then Right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
  • If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second step, For Either Version :
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
  • Go To the bottom of the Vertical Panel on the Left, Click Tools
  • then, also in left panel, click Resident shows a red/white shield.
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labeled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active
  • OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.
Don't forget to re-enable it, when your computer is clean.

-----
Next:

Download and Run ComboFix
If you already have Combofix, please delete this copy and download it again as it's being updated regularly.
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.
-----

Next:
Please make an Uninstall List:
Make an uninstall list using HijackThis[/b][/color]
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:
  • Start HijackThis
  • Click on the Config button
  • Click on the Misc Tools button
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
  • Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Save the file to your desktop.
------
Next:
Please make a New scan with HijackThis
-----

Please Post:
Firewall installed
C:\Combofix.txt
Uninstall list
New HijackThis log and any issues remaining or new problems.

Please use separate posts so No Logs are cut off

Thank you

Hello callitsleep,
Thank you for the logs. Great job :)

You have Viewpoint Media Player installed.
Go to Start-->>Control Panel-->>Add/Remove Programs to remove all items beginning with Viewpoint.

'To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information
to servers at Viewpoint. Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique
Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player. The Viewpoint Media Player randomly
generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a
user's name, email address, or other personal contact information. CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant
information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.'

I recommend uninstalling Viewpoint.

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 5.
  • Go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
  • Go to Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 5 and click on Download button.
  • In Platform box choose Windows.
  • Check the box to Accept License Agreement and click Continue.
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, click on the link under it which says "jre-6u5-windows-i586-p.exe" and save the downloaded file to your desktop.
  • Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
  • Uninstall all old versions of Java (Java Runtime Environment, JRE or JSE)
  • Reboot your computer
  • Delete the folder C:\Program Files\Common Files\Java if present
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file with the java icon which will be at your desktop, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Reboot your computer

Update Adobe Reader
Recently there have been vulnerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version. Adobe Reader 8.
You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

Adobe 8 is a large program and if you prefer a smaller program you can get Foxit 2.0 instead from http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php

Please Intall the following carefully:

Install Recovery Console
Go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994
Select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System

Image

Download the file & save it as it's originally named, next to ComboFix.exe.

Image

Now close all open windows and programs, then drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it. Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console. When complete, a log named CF_RC.txt will open. Please post that log.

Very important: Please do not reboot your machine until we have reviewed the log.

-----
Please Post:
CF_RC.txt

Unread postby turtledove » March 22nd, 2008, 5:48 pm

Hello callitsleep89,
Thank you.
Please print/Copy the following for reference:

1. Close any open browsers. Disconnect from internet, stop AV/Firewall/Teatimer: ***START these BEFORE reconnecting.***

2. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

Code: Select all
File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\kb1ss1p.dll

Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ShellExecuteHooks]
"{ED0ACB58-556F-21DA-DDFE-6D20F3F611BB}"=-

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe
Image

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at "C:\ComboFix.txt"

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Next:

Post:
Combofix.txt
New HijackThis log
Any problems with the computer
Thank you

Re: Fixing my computer, Log Included

Unread postby turtledove » March 23rd, 2008, 4:26 pm

Hello callitsleep,
Thank you for the logs. Things look much better.

To make sure all is clear:

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner. You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:

o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:

+ Extended (If available otherwise Standard)

    o Scan Options:

    + Scan Archives
    + Scan Mail Bases

  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Note: This scanner will work with Internet Explorer Only!

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

Please Post:

Does your FFXI Online account still seem to have problems?

Thank you

Hello callitsleep,

Thank you for the reports. Good work.

The items from the Kaspersky scan are in your System Restore, we will reset that so they will be gone for good.
***Do Not Use ANY Current System Restore Dates Please*** The 2 items there are not able to act unless you use the restore points.**

We will clean the Restore points after the below scan.

Just Precautionary:**
**Note: You have had a previously to coming here what is called a rootkit.** This allows an attacker to install to your computer other bad files. **This also gives them access to ALL
Personal/Financial data and passwords.**

**You need to consider the risk that your system cannot be guaranteed 100% safe or clean even though we fix it. If you only use it for gaming
reading etc. cleanup is fine, still change passwords as stated below.**
*If used for financial purchases or payments:
**Notify ALL Banks/Credit Card Companies of this situation and have passwords changed if possible by phone, and account numbers changed and new
    cards issued.
*It is best to keep this computer OFF the internet EXCEPT for posting at this site.
*You should go to a known clean computer and change ALL passwords at your forums, financial and shopping sites, email, or others using a password. (If bank/credit won't change by phone)
*Do so for all Users on the system. Once cleared, CHANGE passwords for users logging into this system.
