Visual Studio 2005 will not launch from the desktop

I am trying to determine why Visual Studio 2005 will not launch. If I look into Task mgr. while devenv.exe launches I find that it immediatly stops consumming cpu and leaves the SPlash screen on the desktop and dies, never appearing at all under the Applications tab of Task Mgr. After fiddling I was able to launch Visual Studio 2005 and once launched it would always launch thereafter until I rebooted at which point launch failure would resume. I could not determine what action
actually re-enabled the launch of VS 2005.

Some recent history : a torrent was run on this machine resulting in Zonealarm capturing the btdna.exe request to access internet .. The system also ran very slowly at times while WMIprvSE.EXE was running in the process tab of the Task Mgr.
