Re: your computer was infected by unknown trojan - help needed

Unread postby Carolyn » March 13th, 2008, 1:39 pm

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Carolyn and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems. HijackThis logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that it happens.

Please reply to this thread, do not start another.
Please tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
Please tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
Please try as much as possible not to run anything while executing a fix.

As I am still in training, everything that I post to you must be checked by one of the teachers. Thus, there may be a bit of a delay between posts, but it shouldn't be too long.

If you follow these instructions, everything should go smoothly.

we are currently looking at your log now and will be back as soon as possible with your instructions.
while you are waiting one other thing that can be of good use is an uninstall list so please do the following

Make an uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here in your next reply.

Hi Carolyn,

First thank me for your reply.

When I ran smitfruadfix I didn't see any problems. I started my laptop in safe mode as per instructions and then double clicked the file and it ran.

I also deleted some registry entries which I found from other forums. There were also some file(.dll) which I couldn't find on my laptop but I did find some matching registry entries so I deleted them.

First time I installed spyware doctor it also showed tojan fakealert and cleaned it but I didn't solve the problem. Currently I have spyware doctor & norton antivirus installed on my laptop.

I have also observed some slowness in IE after I tried the fix but my guess is that it is because of spyware doctor which I installed recently.

I will run the Hijackthis again as you mentioned and send you details.

Thanks again. You have given me some hope.

Hello Narendra,

If you already have Combofix, please delete this copy and download it again as it's being updated regularly.

Please go to http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofi ... e-combofix to get more information about how to use ComboFix but please do not try to fix anything on your own.

Please download Combofix from Bleeping Computer. Save it to your desktop.

If you can't download it, please try these 2 alternative sites:

Forospyware
Geeks to Go

Double click to run it. Follow the prompts. Once done, it will reboot and a log will be produced. Please post that log and a new HijackThis log in your next reply.

Do not mouse click on Combofix while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Hi Carolyn,

Sorry I didn't reply to you earlier.

It looks like problem has been fixed on my laptop. I have different logins and I only use admin if I need to install something. After running smitfraudfix(i ran it on admin login) I was using my normal user login to check status of problem and it was still happenining. A day later I went to admin login to get unistall list from hijackthis and I got the list which I sent you but after that I am also not having the problem. I am not sure if any program didn't run properly or what happenned but it's working fine since then. I will run these programs to make sure it's really free from all malware.

Thanks for your help.

Hello Narendra,

Please run ComboFix using your administrator account and post the resulting log. Also, please log in to each of your accounts and scan with HijackThis. I would like to see a HijackThis log for each user account.

Thanks,

Carolyn
