Possible malware problem - any help welcome

Unread postby swralmond » March 7th, 2008, 4:31 pm

Dear all,

I have a problem which I believe to be due to malware. Recently,
I noticed IE7 running slower than usual and saw in the lower left
corner that the following sites were being accessed:

http://8v8.biz
http://9gg.biz

Nothing appeared on screen during this. Running my anti-virus software
(McAfee) detected nothing, and nor was anything detected by Windows
Defender. I added the sites to my 'restricted sites' in IE7 and noted
a slight improvement.

Since then, another site (http://791224.com) appears to be being
accessed. McAfee has alerted me to dangerous scripts which, after a
number of attempts, it seems to have deleted. On the McAfee website,
(http://vil.nai.com/vil/SystemHelpDocs/D ... store.aspx)
I was also recommended to get rid of my System Restore, which I have
now done (after backing up my files to CD). My computer is now running
more quickly, but I am still concerned that I'm not really tackling
the problem. If anyone has any advice on how to tackle this I'd be
extremely grateful.

Many thanks in advance.

Hi

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.

  1. Close all applications and windows.
  2. Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  3. If asked to install HijackThis click Yes
  4. When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  5. Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt in your next reply

Hi,

Yes, I am in a university hall of residence and I connect to the internet via a local area network. I connect, however, using my own laptop.

Thanks,

Stephen

Hi

Your computer appears to be clean, though another on your network may be a victim of ARP Spoofing. This is explained here.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ARP_spoofing
and
http://www.avertlabs.com/research/blog/index.php/2007/10/04/arp-spoofing-is-your-web-hosting-service-protected

It something I suggest you alert the Uni's network administrators to asap.
