Unread postby binkyface » September 20th, 2005, 11:08 pm

I've run housecall.trendmicro.com, plus spybot and pandasofteare and they did not find winfixer on my computer.

But, I know I have it because I get the stupid pop-up window all the time.

I have Norton, Microsoft Antispyware and NoAdware on my computer and none of them find it... but NoAdware finds all these spyware cookies. Bleh. I hate this crap.

Now, I'm not by any means knowledgeable in Computers. Can you please dumb it waaaaaaaay down for me? I thank you all in advance for your help.

Hi binkyface :)

Let's start with the below.

Please uninstall AdwareAlert as it is listed on as a Rogue, see here

===============

Now, let's open a command prompt (Start-Run and type cmd) and unregister the dll(s) we're going to remove, by entering the following:

regsvr32 /u C:\WINDOWS\system32\mllmk.dll

It's ok, if these aren't found or 'error' out. If you want, just copy and paste the individual lines to the command prompt to save on the typing.

===============

Run HiJackThis and click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customi ... earch.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customi ... .yahoo.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customi ... earch.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customi ... .yahoo.com
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customi ... .yahoo.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customi ... .yahoo.com

O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {827DC836-DD9F-4A68-A602-5812EB50A834} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\mllmk.dll

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AdwareAlert] C:\Program Files\AdwareAlert\AdwareAlert.Exe -boot

O20 - Winlogon Notify: mllmk - C:\WINDOWS\system32\mllmk.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: windvd - C:\WINDOWS\repair\windvd.dll

Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

===============

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure your able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

folders...

C:\Program Files\AdwareAlert

files...

C:\WINDOWS\system32\mllmk.dll
C:\WINDOWS\repair\windvd.dll

Search for...

ALCMTR.EXE

...using "Start | Search...".

-

Note that some of these file(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them from "Safe Mode".

===============

Please reboot back into normal mode and post back a fresh Hijackthis log :)

I went to Add/Remove programs and didn't see Adware Alert, so what I did was I went to C: then Program Files and then deleted the whole folder. Is that wrong?

No that is fine.

Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
  • This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
  • After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
  • Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
  • You will first be presented with a warning and a list of forums to seek help at.
    it should look like this
    VundoFix V2.1 by Atri
By pressing enter you agree that you are using this at your own risk
Please seek assistance at one of the following forums:
    http://www.atribune.org/forums
    http://www.247fixes.com/forums
    http://www.geekstogo.com/forum
    http://forums.net-integration.net

  • At this point press enter one time.
  • Next you will see:
Type in the filepath as instructed by the forum staff
Then Press Enter, Then F6, Then Enter Again to continue with the fix.
  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):
      C:\WINDOWS\system32\mllmk.dll
  • Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
  • Next you will see:
Please type in the second filepath as instructed by the forum staff
Then Press Enter, Then F6, Then Enter Again to continue with the fix.
  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):
      C:\WINDOWS\system32\kmllm.*

This will be the vundo filename spelt backwards. for example if the vundo dll was vundo.dll you would have the user enter odnuv.*
  • Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
  • The fix will run then HijackThis will open.
  • In HiJackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

      O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {827DC836-DD9F-4A68-A602-5812EB50A834} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\mllmk.dll

      O20 - Winlogon Notify: mllmk - C:\WINDOWS\system32\mllmk.dll
  • After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis and Press any key to Force a reboot of your computer.
  • Pressing any key will cause a "Blue Screen of Death" this is normal, do not worry!
  • Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.
Download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

I am having trouble starting my computer in safe mode. It will allow me to get as far as choosing to log on as an administrator or as my other user, and then all I get is a black screen that says "Safe Mode" at the bottom left and right corner. Nothing else.

To top it all off, I just had the stupid winfixer popup again.

I downloaded vundofix to the desktop and unzipped it to its own folder. Is that right?

What am I doing wrong?

Last question:
You had asked me to remove ALCMTR.exe
It had an icon shaped like a blue crab.

I saw two other blue crab icons in my windows folder while I was performing the steps you told me to.
They are ALCFDRTM, one called ALCFDRTM.ver (without the icon) and ALCWZRD.

Do I need to worry aobut those?

Oh and BTW, I think I figured out the problem with my Safe Mode. I just hit CTRL ALT DEL and chose File and New Task, and the browsed for the vundofix folder from there.

Is that the way its supposed to be?

Hi

You don't need to delete those additional files.

and that safe mode problem is common with this type of infection, and is being looked into.

Congrats, Your log is now clean :)

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
  1. Spybot Search & Destroy- Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  2. AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  3. SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  4. SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  5. IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  6. CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
  7. Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  8. Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
  9. Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)

To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein

Hey, I've got it again.

Damn thing. I didn't disable system restore, like I've seen other people be asked to do, is that why this winfixer keeps coming back?

Also, ever since I deleted those things you told me to delete, I've noticed "windvd.dll" (one of the files I had to delete) kept showing up, even though I searched for it both in regular and safe mode and found nothing.

So here's my latest logfile.

Hello binkyface

Sorry to hear the critter has come back for more fun and games, let's see what we can do :)

  • You will first be presented with a warning.
    It should look like this
    VundoFix V2.13 by Atri
By using VundoFix you agree that you are doing so at your own risk
    Press enter to continue....

  • At this point press enter one time.
  • Next you will see:
Type in the filepath as instructed by the forum staff
Then Press Enter, Then F6, Then Enter Again to continue with the fix.
  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):
      C:\WINDOWS\system32\vtstu.dll
  • Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
  • Next you will see:
Please type in the second filepath as instructed by the forum staff
Then Press Enter, Then F6, Then Enter Again to continue with the fix.
  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):
      C:\Filepath\utstv.*
      O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {6DD0BC06-4719-4BA3-BEBC-FBAE6A448152} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\vtstu.dll

      O20 - Winlogon Notify: vtstu - C:\WINDOWS\system32\vtstu.dll

Before I do this, do I need to disable system restore and then re-enable it after I fix everything?

Because I don't know where I'm getting this virus, and from what I think I remember reading, if you don't get it all it regenerates itself, so I'm thinking my computer created a restore point, maybe, and the virus was still in there somewhere and it regenerated itself?

Or I could be wrong.

Thanks, man :)

No don't disable system restore, it's better to have a bad restore point then none at all.

We will clear your restore points after you are clean :)

Vundofix:
Had a goof with vundofix. Instead of pressing 'enter, F6, enter' after typing in "C:\Filepath\utstv.*" I pressed "6" then enter. Then I pressed F6 and enter again (thinking that it would work, and it didn't, it said filepath does not exist), and rebooted my computer back into safe mode to start from the beginning.
But when I started vundofix again, vtstu was not found.

So I started HJT manually and fixed the checked things you told me to fix. But when I went to copy my vundofix.txt file here, it was the same one as last time (I checked the properties and it said "created September 21") so I guess I did it totally wrong.

Anyway, here's my HJT logfile:
