Persistent malware

Unread postby Arkadyevna » March 8th, 2008, 10:36 pm

My computer got infected this morning from a file that I scanned with F-Secure before opening. I've run Spyware Doctor and it repeatedly finds and deletes files but they keep recurring so it must be missing something, even after a Full Scan. The threats it finds are:
Adware.Agent.BN
Trojan-Downloader.VB.AXA
Adware.Advertising
Spyware.Known_Bad_Sites
Application.TrackingCookies

It keeps making my system hang, launching ads in IE windows, taking over my Desktop and popping up windows trying to get me to install things like "TrustedAntivirus" (which I haven't done). When it hangs and I force a restart, it often fails the first few times.

HijackThis log done immediately following the last Spyware Doctor scan. Please help me, I need to get some work done!

Hello, and welcome to the forum.

My name is Simon V., and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Step 1

Please download and install CCleaner.

Open CCleaner. On the Windows tab, leave the default options alone.

  • On the Applications tab, check (tick) all the boxes except Saved Form Information. This will remove all your saved passwords if you leave this box checked.
  • Click on the Run Cleaner button at the bottom right hand corner.
  • When the cleaner has completed, click Tools in the Left Pane.
  • Verify that Uninstall is highlighted in color, or click on it.
  • In the lower right, click Save to Text File.
  • Pull down the arrow at the top of the Save dialog and choose Desktop as the location.
  • You can leave the filename as install.txt.
  • Click Save, then exit Ccleaner.

Step 2

Print these instructions or copy them to Notepad and save it to your desktop, as you won't be able to access internet in Safe Mode.

Please download SDFix and save it to your desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive% (Drive that contains the Windows directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please reboot into Safe Mode. To do this, go to Start > Turn off Computer, and select Restart. Rapidly tap F8 just before Windows starts to load. In the menu that appears, select Safe Mode (Without Networking)

Log in to your usual account.

Once in Safe Mode, do the following:

Open the extracted SDFix folder and double-click RunThis.bat to start the script.

  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any trojan services and registry entries that it finds, then prompt you to press any key to reboot; press any key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts SDFix will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished. Press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load, the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt (Report.txt will also be copied to clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).

Step 3

In your next reply, please post:

  • the SDFix report (C:\SDFix\Report.txt)
  • the CCleaner Uninstall List (install.txt)
  • a new HijackThis log

Hi Simon, thanks for your reply.

Since posting I did some searching and ran SmitFraudFix which appears to have cleared up the problem (sorry, it was driving me mad and I really needed to get some work done). I've still carried out the steps you suggested though to make sure.

Thanks!

Hi :)

(There doesn't seem to be a list of deleted files in the log, but about 6 were shown on screen when it ran)

That's because you didn't post the full log.

Step 1

Open HijackThis, perform a scan and put a check next to the following items (if present):

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O16 - DPF: {15AC034D-14DF-4AF8-9D02-29E1F56A8235} (Virgin Digital Music Class) - http://www.virgindigital.co.uk/activeX/VirginWMA.cab
O18 - Protocol: schmap-help - (no CLSID) - (no file)
O21 - SSODL: SetupDrive - {cebfbbb5-6eba-4eba-9510-9ed836c35719} - C:\WINDOWS\Installer\{cebfbbb5-6eba-4eba-9510-9ed836c35719}\SetupDrive.dll (file missing)
O21 - SSODL: SrvService - {e01a92da-f0fe-434c-b850-2e1c4edcd7fd} - C:\WINDOWS\Installer\{e01a92da-f0fe-434c-b850-2e1c4edcd7fd}\SrvService.dll (file missing)

Close all programs except HijackThis and click on Fix checked.

Step 2

Click on Start, then Control Panel. Double click on Add or Remove Programs.

Please remove the following program(s):

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
Java(TM) 6 Update 3
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

Then download and install Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 5.

Step 3

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location.
  • You can also access the log by doing the following:

    • Click on the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware icon to launch the program.
    • Click on the Logs tab.
    • Click on the log at the bottom of those listed to highlight it.
    • Click Open.

Step 4

In your next reply, please post:

  • the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware log
  • a new HijackThis log
  • a description of how your computer is currently running

Hi Simon, thanks for that. I didn't realise my JRE was so old - it prompts to update itself occasionally so I assumed it'd be up to date.

My computer has been running basically normally since I ran SmitFraudFix this morning (the log file I posted was the C:\rapport.txt it saves after running, where would I find the full log?). I haven't had any pop-ups or hangs since then, although Firefox did encounter a problem and close when I first read this post, which is unusual. Other than that it seems to be OK, but I'll trust you to tell me if it actually is or not!

Hi :)

The report of SmitfraudFix can be found here - C:\rapport.txt. It doesn't really matter now, as your logs look clean, congratulations :)

Please advise of any problems you are still experiencing, or follow these simple steps to keep your computer clean in the future:

You can now delete the following program(s):

  • SDFix.exe and this folder - C:\SDFix\
  • SmitfraudFix

Disable and Enable System Restore - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

Step 1: Turn off System Restore:

  • On the desktop, right-click My Computer
  • Click Properties
  • Click the System Restore tab
  • Check Turn off System Restore
  • Click Apply, and then click OK

Step 2: Reboot your computer.

Step 3: Turn on System Restore:

  • On the desktop, right-click My Computer
  • Click Properties
  • Click the System Restore tab
  • Uncheck Turn off System Restore
  • Click Apply, and then click OK

Note: Only do this once, NOT on a regular basis!

Make your Internet Explorer More Secure

If you are using Internet Explorer 7, please read and follow the recommendations at this site - http://surfthenetsafely.com/ieseczone8.htm

If you are using Internet Explorer 6, please read and follow the following recommendations -

  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab.
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.

    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt.
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable.
    • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable.
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt.
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt.
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt.
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.

  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Visit Microsoft's Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://update.microsoft.com/ regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Install WinPatrol - An excellent startup manager, notifies you if programs are added to startup, allows delayed startup, ... A must have! An installation guide can be found here: http://www.winpatrol.com/download.html

Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - You should scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would with your anti-virus software. A tutorial on installing and using this product can be found here (do not install TeaTimer): http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutoria ... ial43.html

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. A tutorial can be found here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutoria ... ial49.html

Install IE-Spyad - IE-Spyad places more than 4000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list. This severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites. A tutorial on installing this product can be found here: http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/resource.htm#IESPYAD

Update All Your Security Programs Regularly - Make sure you update all your security programs (Anti-Virus, Firewall, Anti-Spyware) regularly (once a weak, at least). Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

You can also read this excellent article by TonyKlein: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Stand Up and Be Counted! - Please take the time to tell us what you would like to be done about the people who are behind all the problems you have had. We can only get something done about this if the people that we help, like you, are prepared to complain. We have a dedicated forum for collecting these complaints: Malware Complaints. You have to be registered to post. After registering just find your country room and register your complaint. The infection you had was Smitfraud.

Great news!

I've done the System Restore Disable/Enable, posted at Malware Complaints and installed Spybot and WinPatrol, not the others as I don't really use IE. I do have it on my system though - do I still need to do the other things?

As an added bonus you've somehow managed to resolve an ongoing issue I've had with it failing to shut down properly. For months I've had to "Switch User" and then force a shut down from the log in screen, but now it shuts down and restarts and everything just like it's supposed to - thank you so much! :D

You're very welcome, thanks for posting at Malware Complaints :)

I think you have sufficient protection with the programs you currently have installed.
