MALWARE RUINING MY COMPUTER! PLEASE HELP!

Unread postby cwr5f5 » March 7th, 2008, 6:35 pm

I have been infected by some malware that makes my background read as follows:

Warning!
YOU'RE IN DANGER!
YOUR COMPUTER IS INFECTED WITH SPYWARE!

ALL YOU DO WITH COMPUTER IS STORED FOREVER IN YOUR HARD DISK.
WHEN YOU VISIT SITES SEND EMAILS....
(Then there is some more stuff)

at the bottom it says in red: SECURE YOURSELF RIGHT NOW! REMOVE ALL SPYWARE FROM YOUR PC!

I can only change the background for seconds before this background comes back up on my screen. I downloaded hijackthis, and did a scan. Here is my log:

Can anyone tell me what I need to do to delete all of the spyware and get my computer back to normal? I am a computer novice, so if you could simplify the process I would be ever grateful. Thank you very much for your time! Any advice would be fantastic. Have a good day!

Hi, and welcome to malwareremoval forums

I'm dan12, I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Please observe these rules while we work:
  • Perform all actions in the order given.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Stick with it till you're given the all clear.
  • REMEMBER, ABSENCE OF SYMPTOMS DOES NOT MEAN THE INFECTION IS ALL GONE.
If you can do these things, everything should go smoothly.
  • Please note you'll need to have Administrator priviledges to perform the fixes. (XP accounts are Administrator by default)
  • Please let me know if you are using a computer with multiple accounts, as this can affect the instructions given.
It may be helpful to you to print out or take a copy of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

I'm presently looking over your log and hope not to be too long.
Will be back with you as soon as I can.
Thanks dan

Hi,cwr5f5

Here are links to some poker sites regarded as safe for your reference.

* http://www.pokerstars.net/ - This is a free to use/play site.
* http://www.pokerstars.com - This is the paid for version.

Delete bad programs
  • Click Start
  • Go to Control Panel
  • Go to Add/Remove Programs
  • Find and click Remove for the following (if present). It could be that they have a space or something between it , but it has to look like it:

  • Bodog Poker
    Poker.com
    Absolute Poker

**Take care when answering any questions posed by an uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into keeping the program.

Optional - VIEWPOINT MANAGER
Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This will change from what we know in 2006 read this article: http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546
Additional info:Here
I suggest you remove the program now. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.
  • Viewpoint
  • Viewpoint Manager
  • Viewpoint Media Player
  • Viewpoint Toolbar
Your call.

___________________

To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint.
Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player.
The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information.
CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.'

I am an avid online poker player, and I was wondering if it would be OK to keep the programs you suggested? I've had all of the programs for over a year, and they are all well respected programs. I do not believe they have caused any problems, but if you believe this is necessary, I will delete them.

PartyPoker, PartyCasino, UltimateBet, EmpirePoker, and the related sites are a risk and that's where most malware gets installed. Online Poker sites are well known for placing all manner of Internet parasites on their visitors' computers and continue to do so. They should be highly suspect for any Malware on your computer. In a lot of cases, these Poker plugins are also getting installed without your asking for it. You can read Poker gamers targeted by a rootkit backdoor regarding the risk involved with visiting the Poker games web sites. Two safe alternatives are PokerStars and Pogo.com.

Well, I was in the process of a full system scan with AVG Anti-Spyware before we were talking, and it found a few medium risk files that got deleted, but also it found that my Bodog files had 5 files infected with a Trojan.Obfuscated.Mu. I deleted those files. My computer is running very slow, but I have also deleted Poker.com and I will get back to you soon.

Re: MALWARE RUINING MY COMPUTER! PLEASE HELP!

Unread postby dan12 » March 10th, 2008, 6:20 am

Hi, cwr5f5,
Couple of files I want checking out:

Submit a file to Jotti
Please go here : http://virusscan.jotti.org/
On top of the page there is a field to add the filepath, browse and find the file click open which will place it in the field.

C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\INSTAL~1\engine\6\INTEL3~1\knlwrap.exe
C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\INSTAL~1\engine\6\INTEL3~1\iKernel.exe

Then hit Submit
The scan will take a while before the result comes up so please be patient.
Then copy the result and post it here in this thread.

If Jotti's service load is too high, you can use the following scanner instead:
http://www.virustotal.com/xhtml/index_en.html

Run HijackThis, select Do a system scan only and place checks against the following entries (if they are still present)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE
WITH ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED Click on Fix Checked and exit

Re: MALWARE RUINING MY COMPUTER! PLEASE HELP!

Unread postby dan12 » March 10th, 2008, 7:41 am

Ok needed to check those files out as one of them is flagged as a keylogger but from the file paths and location I believe there from " InstallShield Software Corporation"
have you downloaded a program recently?

Run HijackThis, select Do a system scan only and place checks against the following entries (if they are still present)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE
WITH ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED Click on Fix Checked and exit

Your Java is out of date Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of [URL=http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp] Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 5/URL].
  • Scroll down to where it says " Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 5".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

Please include in your next post:
  • New highjackthis log
  • jotti's report
Let me know how things are with machine!

Thanks dan
