Please help - Hijackthis log attached (03.06.08)

Unread postby kai » March 6th, 2008, 2:51 am

Hi there,

So I've just about had it with whatever my computer is infected with. I've been getting "System performance monitor: Warning" bubbles every 2 seconds, homepages reset to the "Internet security center" no matter what I do, and pop-ups galore.

I have to admit that my IT savvy is rather limited. As far as I'm aware, I'm running Symantec AV and Ad-Aware, although I got tricked by the virus and downloaded other "antivirus" software in my inital confusion. However, I know when to throw in the towel, so I'm just going to obediently await further instruction before I do any more harm.

Thanks so much for your help, its really appreciated!

Hello, and welcome to the forum.

My name is Simon V., and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Step 1

Please download and install CCleaner.

Open CCleaner. On the Windows tab, leave the default options alone.

  • On the Applications tab, check (tick) all the boxes except Saved Form Information. This will remove all your saved passwords if you leave this box checked.
  • Click on the Run Cleaner button at the bottom right hand corner.
  • When the cleaner has completed, click Tools in the Left Pane.
  • Verify that Uninstall is highlighted in color, or click on it.
  • In the lower right, click Save to Text File.
  • Pull down the arrow at the top of the Save dialog and choose Desktop as the location.
  • You can leave the filename as install.txt.
  • Click Save, then exit Ccleaner.

Step 2

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!ri).

  • Double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe. A screen will pop up. Select Option 1 (Search) by typing 1 and hit Enter. A text file will appear, which will list the infected files. Save it to a convenient location.
  • The log will also be saved here: C:\rapport.txt

Note: process.exe is detected by some Anti-Virus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Step 3

In your next reply, please post:

  • the CCleaner Uninstall List (install.txt)
  • the SmitfraudFix log (C:\rapport.txt)
  • a new HijackThis log

Hi Simon,

Thanks so much for your timely reply - your help is greatly appreciated!!!

Attached are the reports as requested.

Out of curiosity, will I be losing any information and/or programs in this process? Should I be making backups of files, or will we simply be cleaning?

Hi :)

When posting your logs please post them directly into the reply. Do not attach them.

Step 1

Print these instructions or copy them to Notepad and save it to your desktop, as you won't be able to access internet in Safe Mode.

Please reboot into Safe Mode. To do this, go to Start > Turn off Computer, and select Restart. Rapidly tap F8 just before Windows starts to load. In the menu that appears, select Safe Mode (Without Networking).

Log in to your usual account.

Step 2

Double-click on Smifraudfix.exe.

  • A screen will pop up. Select Option 2 (Clean) by typing 2 and hit Enter.
  • You will be prompted: Registry Cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry? Answer Yes by typing Y and press Enter in order to clean registry keys associated with the infection.
  • The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file; answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.
  • The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart Windows into Normal Mode.
  • A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please save it to a convenient location. The report can also be found at C:\rapport.txt.

Note: running Option 2 (Clean) on a computer that is not infected will remove your desktop background.

Step 3

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location.
  • You can also access the log by doing the following:

    • Click on the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware icon to launch the program.
    • Click on the Logs tab.
    • Click on the log at the bottom of those listed to highlight it.
    • Click Open.

Step 4

In your next reply, please post:

  • the SmitfraudFix report (C:\rapport.txt)
  • the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware log
  • a new HijackThis log

Re: Please help - Hijackthis log attached (03.06.08)

Unread postby Simon V. » March 9th, 2008, 7:24 am

Hi :)

Step 1

Open HijackThis, perform a scan and put a check next to the following items (if present):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [foxfjkx3697] C:\WINDOWS\help\unicox.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [foxpxgl8448] C:\WINDOWS\help\jvwr7190.exe

Close all programs except HijackThis and click on Fix checked.

Step 2

Please download OTMoveIt2.exe by OldTimer and save it to your desktop.

  • Double click on OTMoveIt2.exe to run it.
  • Untick the option to Unregister Dll's and Ocx's.
  • Select the contents of the below codebox, then press Ctrl+C to copy it to the clipboard.

    Code: Select all
    C:\WINDOWS\help\unicox.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\help\jvwr7190.exe

  • In OTMoveIt right-click on the box labelled Paste Standard List of Files/Folders to Move and click Paste (1).
  • Click on MoveIt! (2).
  • Click on Exit (3).
  • If it asks you to reboot allow that.

Please refer to this picture for using OTMoveIt -

Image

A log will be produced at C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles\date_time.log, where date_time are numbers.

Step 3

Close all programs before continuing, and try not to run anything during the scan.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner. (You will need to use Internet Explorer to run this scan)

On the welcome screen, click Accept.

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, click Install.

  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on Next.
  • Now click on Scan Settings.
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:

  • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:

    Extended (if available, otherwise Standard)

  • Scan Options:

    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases

  • Click OK.
  • Now under Select a Target to Scan:

    Select My Computer.

  • The program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button and save the file to your desktop.

Step 4

In your next reply, please post:

  • the OTMoveIt log
  • the Kaspersky Online Scan report
  • a new HijackThis log
  • a description of how your computer is currently running

Hi Simon,

So far so good. Most of the virus symptoms (popups and redirected homepage) seem to have disappeared, however, I still get an "Autoprotect Results" window - I'm assuming from Symantec - that shows it keeps having to delete "trojan.zlob".

Also, my computer is still very slow at startup. I can get programs to open, but it takes a good 15 minutes before I can get real-time reactions. Is it advisable to run a defrag, or should I wait until this entire process is complete?

Thanks, and here are my logs:

OTMoveIt

File/Folder C:\WINDOWS\help\unicox.exe not found.
File/Folder C:\WINDOWS\help\jvwr7190.exe not found.

Hi :)

Your anti-virus is probably detecting System Restore files... Please do this to reset your System Restore points -

Step 1: Turn off System Restore:

  • On the desktop, right-click My Computer
  • Click Properties
  • Click the System Restore tab
  • Check Turn off System Restore
  • Click Apply, and then click OK

Step 2: Reboot your computer.

Step 3: Turn on System Restore:

  • On the desktop, right-click My Computer
  • Click Properties
  • Click the System Restore tab
  • Uncheck Turn off System Restore
  • Click Apply, and then click OK

Note: Only do this once, NOT on a regular basis!

Then, you can fix some HijackThis entries to speed up your boot time (if you want to keep certain programs to start together with Windows, don't fix their corresponding item with HijackThis) -

Open HijackThis, perform a scan and put a check next to the following items (if present):

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [LaunchApp] Alaunch
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SiSPower] Rundll32.exe SiSPower.dll,ModeAgent
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SiS Windows KeyHook] C:\WINDOWS\system32\keyhook.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SynTPEnh] C:\Program Files\Synaptics\SynTP\SynTPEnh.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RemoteControl] "C:\Program Files\CyberLink\PowerDVD\PDVDServ.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IMJPMIG8.1] "C:\WINDOWS\IME\imjp8_1\IMJPMIG.EXE" /Spoil /RemAdvDef /Migration32
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSPY2002] C:\WINDOWS\system32\IME\PINTLGNT\ImScInst.exe /SYNC
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PHIME2002ASync] C:\WINDOWS\system32\IME\TINTLGNT\TINTSETP.EXE /SYNC
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PHIME2002A] C:\WINDOWS\system32\IME\TINTLGNT\TINTSETP.EXE /IMEName
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [LManager] C:\Program Files\Launch Manager\QtZgAcer.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [eRecoveryService] C:\Windows\System32\Check.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Photo Downloader] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Album Starter Edition\3.0\Apps\apdproxy.exe"

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 8.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SoundMan] SOUNDMAN.EXE
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MsnMsgr] "C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\MsnMsgr.Exe" /background
O4 - Startup: Office Startup.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA.EXE
O4 - Startup: Microsoft Find Fast.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\FINDFAST.EXE
O4 - Startup: Adobe Gamma.lnk = C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Calibration\Adobe Gamma Loader.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Utility Tray.lnk = C:\WINDOWS\system32\sistray.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Google Updater.lnk = C:\Program Files\Google\Google Updater\GoogleUpdater.exe

Close all programs except HijackThis and click on Fix checked.

Is it advisable to run a defrag, or should I wait until this entire process is complete?

Feel free to defragment your drive :)

In your next reply, please let me know whether your computer is running better.

Hi Simon,

I have deleted a majority of the startup programs, so hopefully that will help. I've started a defrag and will let it run overnight, so I'll have a performace update for you shortly.

In the mean time, should I run any more scans to see if the 12 viruses and 23 infected objects (as detected by Kaspersky) have been taken care of? :?

The files detected by Kaspersky were either a few of SmitfraudFix's files (those aren't really viruses but could be used for malicious purposes) or files in System Restore points. We'll remove those when you're clean :)

Yup, still here! I've just been unusually busy lately though....sorry!

Okay, defrag complete, and to be honest, the startup time hasn't improved that much.

....what now?

:)

This is not my area of expertise, but here is a great site with lots of tips for when your computer is running slow > http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miek ... puter.html

If your computer is still running slow after following the advice on that site, I'd recommend you ask help on a forum that deals with general computer problems > http://forums.whatthetech.com/Microsoft ... _f119.html

I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help to you, and I wish you the best of luck with solving your computer problems.

Not to worry....I'll take a look at some of the sites you referred me to, but I can certainly deal with a slow computer....well, now that its virus free, of course! :)

Just one last thing: how do I go about deleting the programs I used during this process? Can I simply delete the icons from my desktop, or will I need to uninstall?

Thanks!
