Slow computer

Unread postby carlrobison1 » February 26th, 2008, 2:15 pm

Hi, I've got a Dell P4 3.0 ghz with 2.5 gigs of ram. I've also got a nvidia geforce fx 5500 video card installed. I use this computer almost exclusively for editing pictures with Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop. The problem is that when I open an image in either of these programs, there's about a 3-5 second delay as the pictures load. I'm working with about a thousand pictures at a time so 3-5 seconds for each picture really adds up. By opening up windows task manager, i notice that when each picture is loading in Lightroom, the CPU usages jumps up to 100%, then once it's done loading, goes back to less than 10%. I also just noticed that when I go into device manager that there's a question mark next to Other Devices and if I expand it, another question mark next to Video Controller.

Anyway, here's the HJT file. Thank you in advance for any help.

Unread postby John B. » March 1st, 2008, 1:00 pm

Hi! :hello2: and welcome to the Malware Removal forums.
My name is John Brouwer - if it helps, you can call me John for short. I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

HijackThis logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need
your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that happens.

Please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will working be on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Finally, please make a uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:
    • Start HijackThis
    • Click on the Config button
    • Click on the Misc Tools button
    • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
    • Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Save the file to your desktop and post the contents in a reply to this topic. Also post a fresh HijackThis log as it's been nearly five days since you posted the other one.
Greets, John.

Re: Slow computer

Unread postby John B. » March 2nd, 2008, 12:57 pm

Hi Carl,

First of all I've got a question regarding your AVG product. Are you using AVG Free Edition or AVG Internet Security (with firewall)? I'm asking this because you need to have a third-party firewall (so the AVG Internet Security firewall) is fine and you need to have your Windows Firewall disabled.

I also see the update process of Windows XP running and it could be that you don't have all the updates. Please make sure you have all the critical updates.

Your log looks clean, except for one ActiveX control item, so we will update some programs and run some more scans.

Step 1: Remove bad HijackThis entry
  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside the item listed below (if present):

    O16 - DPF: {15589FA1-C456-11CE-BF01-00AA0055595A} - http://w4s2.work4sure.com/c/ge/w4sgeen9.exe
  • Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
  • Click on the "Fix Checked" button
  • When completed, close the application.

Step 2: Update Adobe Reader
It looks like your version of Adobe Reader is out of date and you're vulnarable for infections.
Please start Adobe Reader and install the updates available.

Step 3: Update Java
Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 4.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

Step 4: Download and Run ATF Cleaner
Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune to your desktop.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it.

Under Main choose:
Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Cookies
Temporary Internet Files
Prefetch
Java Cache

*The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.

Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Opera:
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Step 5: Download and Run ComboFix
Download Combofix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop:
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe

For information regarding this download, please visit this webpage:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofi ... e-combofix

Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop!

Now close any open browsers. Also close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts. Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.

When finished, it will produce a report for you. This report will also be saved in C:\ComboFix.txt

Step 6: Run Kaspersky Online Scan
Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Accept

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky,
Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
      Scan Archives Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
      Select My Computer
  • The program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.

Step 7: Post logs
Please post the following logs in a reply to this topic (use multiple posts if needed):
  • Tell me if you're using the firewall of AVG.
  • Tell me if you have installed all the critical updates.
  • Tell me if the problem with the loading of the pictures has always been present or started recently/after using the program for some time. If it hasn't always been like this tell me if you installed any new software/hardware/drivers before the problem started.
  • Fresh Uninstall log
  • Fresh HijackThis log
  • ComboFix log
  • Kaspersky log

Re: Slow computer

Unread postby John B. » March 4th, 2008, 10:10 am

Hi,

Your system seems to be clean and I think that the loading of the picture is normal. You could try the forums of the programs you're using.

You didn't follow the Java instructions correctly, make sure you do everything the way I say it.

You aren't running Firewall Software. Please download and install one of them first!

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. If you use the Windows Firewall you might think that's sufficient but it only controls one way of the traffic (inbound/outbound not sure). Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. Here are some firewalls which are free for personal use and most used:
Comodo
Kerio
Online Armor

As you did this, we can begin with the fix.

Step 1: Delete program
  • Click Start
  • Go to Control Panel
  • Go to Add/Remove Programs
  • Find and click Remove for the following (if present):

    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 3

Step 2: Install Recovery Console
Go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994
Select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System

Image

Download the file & save it as it's originally named, next to ComboFix.exe.

Image

Now close all open windows and programs, then drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it. Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console. When complete, a log named CF_RC.txt will open. Please post that log.

Very important: Please do not reboot your machine until we have reviewed the log.

Greets, John.

Hi Carl,

The log is fine. I did something worng, because you still run an outdated version of Java. You're running Verion 6 Update 3 and the newest version is Version 6 Update 4.

Update Java
Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 4.
  • Scroll down to where it says Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 4.
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove Java(TM) 6 Update 3
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Reboot your computer once the Java component is removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

You're computer is clean, so it's probably normal for the program to take a few seconds to load the picture. You could follow the instructions later on in this post to defrag the hard drive which could increase the speed. Again, the best thing to do is ask it at a forum specialised in the editing of picture/the program you use.

This is my normal post for when you are clear - which you now are - or seem to be.
Please advise of any problems you still have. If you think you're clean please give one more reply so that I can archive this topic.

Now that you are clean, I got some tips & tricks for you to keep your computer clean and secure. The first few (like removing dangerous tools and Windows Update) have to be done, the others are option (beginning with Spybot S &D).

It may seem like your system will be too much protected with all these things installed, but a lot of programs aren't running always on the background so don't slow down your computer. Please take a look at the following things:
  • Uninstall tools - The following will not only uninstall ComboFix but also clean up some other dangerous tools and backups, clean up the System Restore points and hide the system files.
    • Go to Start
    • Click on Run
    • Type ComboFix /u (Note: This command is case sensitive.)
You may delete any logs left on the desktop.
  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
  • Visit Microsoft's Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://update.microsoft.com/ regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Tutorail for Spybot S & D
  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. You can download it here:
    SpywareBlaster
  • Install WinPatrol - As a robust security monitor, WinPatrol will alert you to hijackings, malware attacks and critical changes made to your computer without your permission. WinPatrol takes snapshot of your critical system resources and alerts you to any changes that may occur without your knowledge. You can download it from this website:
    WinPatrol
The developer is a well-known man in the MalWare Removal business. If you really like WinPatrol think about upgrading to the PLUS version. It will give you additional features and you will only have to pay once, for your whole malware-free life.
  • Install MVPS HOSTS - This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial here:
    WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.
  • Use an alternative Internet Browser - Many of the exploits are directed to users of Internet Explorer. Try using a different browser instead:
Firefox << Most used, I use this one myself.
    Opera
  • Bookmark general cleanup links - It could be that your computer is becoming slower and slower. This is not always the cause of malware. Most of the times it's malware when you're computer is suddenly getting slow or doing strange. When the slowdown increases slowly check (so now bookmark) these links for tips & tricks:
    Help! My computer is slow
Slow Computer? Check here first; it may not be malware
  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected will reduce dramatically.

>> Here << you can see how you can help us.

May your God go with you..

John.
