Hi,

I need your help. I have a version of CWS that I'm having trouble getting rid of. I tried to erase them via hijack this using another website as a guide, but I must have missed some files. Here is the relevant info:

First of all I need you to download some programs for use later.

Download this file and unzip it to your desktop

Download About:Buster from here. Once it is downloaded extract it to c:\aboutbuster and check for updates. Do NOT use it yet

Download CWShredder from here, install it, check for updates but again, don't use it yet.

Then, Download Ad-aware Second Edition here and install it. If you already have Ad-aware Second Edition skip to the next step.

Open adaware and Click the "Check for updates now" line on the main screen. Click the "Connect" button on the webupdate screen.

If an update is available download it and install it. Click the "Finish" button to go back to the main screen.

Click on the "Settings" button (gear symbol in the upper right corner of the main status screen) in the quick launch toolbar to open the General settings screen. Check the "Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal" setting and then click "Proceed" to save your changes

Click the "Scan now" button in the main menu on the left side of the main status screen or use the "Start" button in lower right corner. This will open the Preparing System Scan screen. Please deselect "Search for negligible risk entries", as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat. Then select "Use custom scanning options" and click "CUstomize". This will open the "Scan Settings Page. Make sure all of the following are On with a "green" checkmark:

Scan within archives
Scan active processes
Scan Registry
Deep-scan Registry
Scan my IE Favorites for banned URLs
Scan my Hosts File

Then click on the "Tweak" Button to open up the tweak settings.

Open up the Scanning Engine section and make sure all of the following are On with a "green" checkmark:

Scan registry for all users instead of current user only

Make sure the following is unchecked with a "red" X:

Unload recognized processes & modules during scan.

Open up the Cleaning Engine section and make sure all of the following are On with a "green" checkmark:

Always try to unload modules before deletion
During Removal, unload Explorer and IE if necessary
Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot.

Click the "Proceed" button to save settings.

Don't scan yet. We will do it in safe mode.

Ensure hidden files and folders are set to show;
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

Next, go to Start->Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok

Scroll down and find the service called Network Security Service ( 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I). When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows.

Please disconnect from the Internet and unplug your modem for the duration of this fix You may want to print the rest of these instructions.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode by tapping F8 while booting up and continue for the rest of the fix in SAFE MODE

While in safe mode, double click on the cwsserviceemove.reg file you downloaded at the beginning. Grant it permission to add the registry items.

Then Open cwshredder that you downloaded in the first step. Close all browser windows and click on the fix/next button.

Bring up task manager Ctrl-Alt-Del and end these processes if they are present

appfr.exe
appfh32.exe

Now find and delete these files, if you can't find one then don't worry.. just move on to the next one.

C:\WINNT\mfcbo.dll
C:\WINNT\smrzp.dll
C:\WINNT\system32\appfr.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\appfh32.exe

Now run hijackthis and click the scan button, when it has finished scanning put a check against the following and click 'fix checked'

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINNT\smrzp.dll/sp.html#10001
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINNT\smrzp.dll/sp.html#10001

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINNT\smrzp.dll/sp.html#10001
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {75E95428-F851-264D-7063-6BCA1C89B7DC} - C:\WINNT\mfcbo.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [appfr.exe] C:\WINNT\system32\appfr.exe
O23 - Service: Network Security Service ( 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I) - Unknown owner - C:\WINNT\system32\appfh32.exe

The following step is important as you may have several malware files in your temp directories.

Then browse to the C:\documents and settings\Your User Name (repeat for all other user names in documents and settings)\local settings\temp folder and delete all files and folders in it.
Then browse to the C:\Window\Temp folder and delete all files and folders in it.
Then in internet explore click tools>internet Options>General. Click on Delete Files make sure you get all offline content as well.

Now navigate to the c:\aboutbuster directory and double-click on aboutbuster.exe When the tool is open press the OK button, then the Start button, then the OK button, and then finally the Yes button. It will start scanning your computer for files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so. Post the log file in your next reply.

Scan with Adaware by opening it and clicking the "Next" button to start the scan.

When the scan is completed the Performing System Scan screen will change name to "Scan Complete".

Click the "Next" button to get to the Scanning Results screens where more information about the objects detected during the scan is available.

Click the Critical Objects Tab. In general all of the items listed will be bad. Be carefull with the Hosts file entries. Malware uses the hosts file to redirect you websites. However you can use the hosts file as a way to prevent malware. If the object has 127.0.0.1 in it, it should most likely not be deleted as it is protecting against unwanted sites. For more information on how to use a host file to protect yourself read here. So in short, you may or may not want to fix the hosts file entries.

To fix all the bad critical objects do the following:

Right click on one of them to open up the selection screen. Click the "Select All" button to select all entries. In general all should be selected with the exception of the good hosts file entries.

When all are selected Click "Next" and then "OK" in the pop-up window to confirm the removal.

Now reboot, and run hijackthis again and post a fresh log along with the about buster log. :)

ad-aware

Unread postby ljmonahan » March 22nd, 2005, 4:56 pm

Hi,

I am having trouble downloading ad-aware from the site recommended by lavasoft. When I click to download, nothing comes up; when I move to the redirect site and try to download from the ftp site, I get a dns error message. Do you know where else I might get this program? Could the hijacking program be disabling the download?

Thanks,

Leon

Try using the AdAware SE link in my signature.

If it still gives a problem, tell us exactly what it is saying. Liz

hijack this and about buster logs

Unread postby ljmonahan » March 22nd, 2005, 7:44 pm

Hi,

I was able to do all of the steps except remove appfh32.exe through task manager, and unfortunately, I think that was the key. When I tried to remove it, the computer didn't allow me to (access is denied). Here are the updated logs:

Hmm - let's change the order of the steps a bit. Before running this fix, please deactivate PestPatrol, since it could interfer with the fix.

Please disconnect from the Internet and unplug your modem for the duration of this fix You may want to print the rest of these instructions.

1. Reboot your computer into Safe Mode by tapping F8 while booting up and continue for the rest of the fix in SAFE MODE

2. Go to Start->Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok

Scroll down and find the service called Network Security Service. When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows.

3. Bring up task manager Ctrl-Alt-Del and end these processes if they are present

ienx.exe
appfr.exe
appfh32.exe

4. Now run hijackthis and click the scan button, when it has finished scanning put a check against the following and click 'fix checked'

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = res://C:\WINNT\smrzp.dll/sp.html#10001
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINNT\smrzp.dll/sp.html#10001
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINNT\smrzp.dll/sp.html#10001
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINNT\smrzp.dll/sp.html#10001
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {CFEC732F-A116-72CA-9079-772DB7235D2A} - C:\WINNT\system32\d3xv.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [appfr.exe] C:\WINNT\system32\appfr.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ienx.exe] C:\WINNT\ienx.exe
O23 - Service: Network Security Service ( 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I) - Unknown owner - C:\WINNT\system32\appfh32.exe

5. Now find and delete these files, if you can't find one then don't worry.. just move on to the next one.

C:\WINNT\system32\d3xv.dll
C:\WINNT\smrzp.dll
C:\WINNT\ienx.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\appfr.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\appfh32.exe

6. While in safe mode, double click on the cwsserviceemove.reg file you downloaded at the beginning. Grant it permission to add the registry items.

8. Reboot to Normal mode. Go to this adress and run online Housecall, allow it to delete whatever they find:

TrendMicro HouseCall

9. Run hijackthis again and post a fresh log along with the about buster log. :)

Hi,

I apologize. I ran yesterday's instructions in normal not safe mode. I ran them again this morning in safe mode. Sorry about the goof. The about buster log and hijack this log are below. The only thing that stands out is the javalo.exe file, but obviously I'm a beginner. Thanks again.

You're doing fine - but there's still some leftovers....

1. Reboot into Safe Mode.

2. Bring up task manager Ctrl-Alt-Del and end these processes if they are present

javalo.exe
d3yc32.exe

3. Now find and delete these files, if you can't find one then don't worry.. just move on to the next one.

C:\WINNT\system32\javalo.exe
C:\WINNT\d3yc32.exe

4. Now run hijackthis and click the scan button, when it has finished scanning put a check against the following and click 'fix checked'

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {2844D84A-8BE0-CBD7-A395-E9E0B1ADD92F} - C:\WINNT\ipng.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [javalo.exe] C:\WINNT\system32\javalo.exe

5. Reboot your computer and post a fresh HijackThis log

Close to the end... I'm not sure if this thing is playing games with us :) The "bad" O23 line just returned.

Go to Start -> Run and type "services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok.

Scroll down and find the service called Network Security Service ( 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I). When you find it, right-click on it and chose Properties. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to "Disabled". Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows.

Now run hijackthis and click the scan button, when it has finished scanning put a check against the following and click 'fix checked'

O23 - Service: Network Security Service ( 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I) - Unknown owner - C:\WINNT\system32\appfh32.exe (file missing)

Reboot into Normal mode

Download this small utility:

http://www.fbeej.dk/Programmer/egSrch.zip

Unpack it to your desktop, doubleclick on RegSrch.vbs and type Network Security Service in the textfield, Click OK. The program will produce a small text file, that you need to copy into yout next comment together with a fresh HijackThis log.

When I ran the regsearch.vbs file, it said that no instances of Network Security Service was found-- no report was set up.

Thanks,

The End...

Unread postby FBJ » March 24th, 2005, 6:33 am

Hi Leon

Your log is clean! :thumbleft:

1. If your problems are gone I suggest you hide files and folders again - reverse this instruction:

http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

2. It's a good idea to Flush your System Restore after ridding yourself of malware:

1. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
2. Click Properties.
3. Click the System Restore tab.
4. Check Turn off System Restore.
5. Click Apply, and then click OK.
6. Restart the computer.
7. Follow steps 1 to 3 again, then uncheck Turn off System Restore tab.

When you are sure you are clean create a restore point.

To create a restore point:

Single-click Start and point to All Programs.
Mouse over Accessories, then System Tools, and select System Restore.
In the System Restore wizard, select the box next the text labeled "Create a restore point" and click the Next button.
Type a description for your new restore point. Something like "After trojan/spyware cleanup". Click Create and you're done.

3. Some advice to stay clean:

To reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing SpywareBlaster and SpyWareGuard and IE/Spyad.

SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard are by JavaCool and both are free programs. SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed and consumes no system resources. SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

More info and download is available at:
SpywareBlaster: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
SpywareGuard: http://www.wilderssecurity.net/spywareguard.html

IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It is free.

More info and download is available at:
IE/Spyad: https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm

http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

... to make sure that you have the latest patches for Windows.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.asp

... to get the latest version of Internet Explorer. It's very important to keep your system up to date to avoid unnecessary security risks.
