My experience with ATI cards are great. First card busted after 7 years of use, another one is still going strong.

Depends on where you live, the norm is anything from 128MB to 256MB. Better ones for gaming definitely, not those 128 or 256MB cards. Here the norm is 256MB. Good enough for some old games.

For the best gaming, the nvidia 8800GT is the newest entry and top performer for the price.
They do run hot and may burn up quicker.

The ati hd3850/3870 are not far behind and do hidef video very well

Nvidia is coming out soon with a nice mid level card, the 9600

my ati 9600 would be at dead last on this chart

I've always been an Nvidia fan when it comes to graphics cards. Tried a couple ATI's over the years and found them to be flaky.

My setup... just built it last March...

Mobo: Asus P5N32-E SLI Plus
CPU: Pentium D 3.2Ghz OC'd to 3.8Ghz
RAM: 4 Gigs OCZ Platinum Ed. XTC PC2-6400 800mhz
Vid Card: Dual Asus 8800GTS 640Meg SLI'd
Sound Card: X-Fi Platinum Fatal1ty Champion Series
Speakers: Logitech Z-5500 Digital
Keyboard: Logitech G-15
HDD: 2 300Gig SATAII Seagate Barracuda's
P/S: OCZ 850W GameXtreme
Case: CoolerMaster Praetorian 730
O/S: Window Vista Ultimate

The CPU is very soon(next month) to be replaced by an Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700 2.66Ghz.

Everything is lit up by blue LED's... even the Keyboard :)

Wow, Kota, that's a nice build! :D

My parents will kill me if I build one like that. It costs thousands here. :(

Overall... yeah it was/is a bit pricey. But worth it. I hadn't done a major upgrade to my kit for about 6-7 years. My main system before this was a PIII 1Ghz w/512Megs of RAM... so I was due :)

And if you buy the parts over a span of a few months it isn't so bad. I just recently(last month) purchased the Sound Card anthe new speakers. Was using a generic sound card that came with my MoBo and my old Logitech Z-350's beofre that.

I have the Logitech Z-5500 speakers as well, had them for a few years. They're a bit pricey, but man...they sound amazing. They sound better than my surround sound system for my TV does!

So some improved windows and picture fasteners would seem to be in order then. :D

'Kota, kind of off topic but...

Do you keep your speakers' effect on 6 ch direct? That's the best sound I've been able to produce, but I haven't talked to anyone else that has the same set. Or have you found another combination that sounds better?

Mine also rattles the house at times, I love it ;)
