Infected PC - require assistance

Unread postby j_rich » January 28th, 2008, 11:37 pm

Good evening,

I seem to have contracted one or more trojans and could really use some assistance in getting rid of them. Please advise on how best to proceed. Thank you.

Hi! Welcome to the MWR forums.
My name is Scotty. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research.

Please be patient as my posts to you have to be checked before I reply, so they make take longer.

Install HijackThis

  • Download HJTInstall.exe to your Desktop.
  • Doubleclick HJTInstall.exe to install it.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Copy/Paste the log to your next reply please.
Don't use the Analyse This button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
Don't have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Please make a uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here in a reply.

By the way, last night I downloaded Stopmozilla and it successfully removed 51 ad/spyware infections. This evening it found another 3. The infections are usually eminating from within the system_volume_information folder, will this folder continue to be a source of problems each time I reboot?

Thanks,
Jordan

Hi

Sorry for the delay.

The infections within system_volume_information are infected Restore Points. They will reinfect you if you were to use System Restore. We routinely clean the Restore points after we have cleaned the computer. Having an infected Restore Point is better than not having one.

You are operating your computer with multiple Anti Virus/Firewall programs running in memory at once:

Trend Micro & Bitdefender

Anti-virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer. Having two anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash. The conflict may also allow infections onto your computer.
This is also true of firewalls.

Please disable/remove one or the other so they do not conflict.

Run HijackThis, select Do a system scan only and place checks against the following entries (if they are still present):

    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank

WITH ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED Click on Fix Checked and exit HijackThis.

These lines in your log,
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
O6 - HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

If you did not make any intentional changes regarding Internet Explorer policies fix those in HijackThis also.

Delete the older versions of Java and download the newest.

Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components.

  1. Close any programmes you may have running, ESPECIALLY your web browser
  2. Click Start > Control Panel.
  3. Click Add/Remove Programs.
  4. Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  5. Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  6. Repeat as many times as necessary to remove all versions of Java.
  7. Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.

Then download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) (4th one down the list), which is JRE6u4, and click Yes at the page warning, then accept the Licence Agreement before downloading the Offline file.

F-Secure Online Scan

Scan online using F-Secure Online Scanner Next Generation using Internet Explorer
http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/ols3.shtml
Click on the link "F-Secure Online Scanner Next Generation".
You may receive an alert on the address bar at this point to install the ActiveX control.
Click on that alert and then Click Insall ActiveX component.
Read the license agreement and click "Accept".
Click "Full System Scan" to download the scanning components and begin scan and cleaning.
When done click "Show report" and copy/paste its contents into your next reply with a new HijackThis log.

I am unable to remove the Trend Micro scanner as I do not have the correct password, but I've disabled it.

Hi

Could you elaborate on what problems you are having, such as popups, slow down, high % of cpu. Which infection do you believe you have, do you have a name?

Sure, I used to receive a warning from Trend Micro about Trojan.Pandex.L. Then I found your web site and read some other posts and downloaded StopZilla, combofix and it seems to have corrected the problems. StopZilla found close to 40 adware/spyware issues during the initial scan, but subsequent scans have come up clean. I then posted to your site in order to get some legitimate help rather than sort of shooting in the dark on my own. The F-Secure scan caught a few cookies, but the pc now seems fairly clean. Strangely enough, the infections never really had an adverse affect on the pc's performance, although they may have been performing other nefarious activities. It could be your assistance has finally rooted out the remaining "bugs".

Thanks,

Jordan

Hi

Firstly, I should explain that ComboFix is a powerful tool which is constantly updated and should not be used without expert help.

If you ran Combofix, I would like to see the log it would have created which should be within this folder,
C:\Combofix
and its a text file called
Combofix.txt
Could you copy/paste the full log in your next reply?

Hello,

I've just run ComboFix to read the results and glean information from other logs posted to this site, as a point of comparison.

Current ComboFix log:

Hi,

The pup04.sys has since been removed, it was a virus. I ran stopZilla this evening and it found 1 spyware ("lpv4mons") in the "hklm\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\ controlpanel\load" directory. It's not the first time spyware has been found here either, strangely enough. Is there something I should be doing to reduce this apparent vulnerability?

Thanks.

Hi

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location.
  • The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
  • Post that log back here with a new HijackThis log.
