Hello Chris,

Well, everything looks good. As far as I can see, your last Combofix log looks clean. Java has had an update since we began said he should go ahead and update to the most recent version.

Step 1:

Updating Java:

• Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE): Currently Version 6, Update 4.
• Scroll down to: ""Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u3 allows end-users to run Java applications".
• Click the "Download" button to the right.
• Check-mark (tic): "Accept License Agreement".
• Page will refresh.
• Click "Windows Offline Installation (with or without Multilanguage) ".
• Save to desktop.

Step 2:

Remove older versions:

• Close any programs you may have running - especially web browser(s).
• Go to Start => Control Panel
• Double-click Add/Remove programs.
• Highlight any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
• Click Remove or Change/Remove.
• Repeat for any/all versions of Java.

Step 3:

Install newest version:

• After all Java components are removed:
  Reboot
• Double-click jre-6u4-windows-i586-p.exe on your desktop.
• Follow prompts to install new version.

Once you have updated Java, please post a fresh HijackThis log to see if there is anything we need to clean up. I noticed from some earlier logs that there were a few things running at start up that really don't need to and we can take a look at those. Once we finished with that, we can be pretty sure that your problem is not Malware related and proceed accordingly.

Thanks again. I removed the .jpg files and have removed the old version of Java and installed the new. Following is the latest HJTlog. I agree on the startup programs and have wanted to remove them but didn't know how. I would appreciate any advice you have. Thanks.

Okay, here are the HijackThis fixes. This will take care of some unnecessary startup items.

Please disable AVG Anti-Spyware until the computer is clean.

• Double-click the AVG Anti-Spyware icon' in the system tray.
• In the Resident Shield section:
• Toggle the AVG Anti-Spyware active protection off by clicking Change state.
• Status will switch to inactive.

Note: If you are instructed to reboot at any time during your cleanup, AVG Anti-Spyware will prompt you as to whether you would like to Restart the Resident Shield. Reply No and set it to inactive for the duration of your cleanup.

Don't forget to re-enable it, when your computer is clean.

Run HiJackThis and click "Do a system scan only", then check(tick) the following, if present:

I completed the steps requested and rebooted. The messengers still came up in the startup of the computer. I did download the latest AVG updates and reactivated it. I do have a question. What are the 010 unknown file in winsock files? After I rebooted, I ran another HJT file with a log. It is attached below. My wife asked me to wait on trying to send a large file until she could notify the owner of the server hosting their web page so if something appeared to be happening, he could nip it quickly before it tied up the server again. I'll notify you as soon as we try this...hopefully by the first of the work week we'll have tried it out. Thanks a bunch for all of your help.

I've never used Yahoo Messenger, but if it's like other programs, you have the option of launching it with Windows start up in the "Preferences" or "Options" section accessible through the program's main window.

This entry in HijackThis:

Below is my standard Final Cleanup and All Clean speech. Included in it are tips on how to keep your computer from being reinfected. They are simple to set up and simple to maintain, and I HIGHLY recommend that you follow them.

Download and scan with CCleaner
NOTE<: Starting with v1.27.260, CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation. IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbarfree Slim version instead of the Standard Build.

Before first use:

• Sselect Options=>Advanced.
• UNcheck Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours

Select the items you wish to clean up.

A note regarding cookies: CCleaner allows you to keep the cookies from selected sites such as those which use cookies to save your login information.
• From the main screen:Click Options=>Cookies.
• Highlight the web sites you wish to keep.
• Click the -> button.
Click the Cleaner button to return to the main screen.
Windows tab: (under the)
**Internet Explorer** header:
• Select (place a check mark next to) all items.

  1. Uninstall Combofix. (If Combofix was not used, proceed to step 2.)
  
  • Click START=>RUN
  • Type Combofix /u in the runbox (make sure you add the space in between the x in Combofix and /u)
  • Click OK
    
    
  2. Clear out any other special tools we've used to clean up your computer. They are very powerful and if used incorrectly, may cause irreparable damage to your computer.<--NOTE: Skip this step if no other tools were downloaded.
  Download OTMoveIt by OldTimer to your Desktop.
  
  • Double click OTMoveIt.exe to launch it.
  • Click on the CleanUp! button.
  • OTMoveIt will download a list from the Internet, if your firewall or other defensive programs alerts you, allow it access.
  • You will be prompted to allow the clean up procedure, click Yes
  • When finished exit out of OTMoveIt
  • Now delete OTMoveIt.exe (if still present).
  3. Disable, then reenable System Restore; with a reboot in-between. Then immediately create a new system restore point manually.
  
  Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I recommend installing the following applications:
  
  • Spywareblaster => SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed, and uses NO system resources.
  • Comodo BOCLEAN => Stop identity thieves from getting personal information. BOClean watches memory, registry, and the file system for malware loading up and shuts it down before it has a chance to launch.
  • How to use Winpatrol to protect your computer. => Download and install the free version of Winpatrol to keep malicious software from running.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware => Follow link for instructions on how to download, install and use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware => Follow link for instructions on how to download, install and use Spybot.
  To protect yourself further:
  • IE/Spyad => IE/Spyad (now known as ZonedOut ) places over 5000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted Sites list, and uses NO system resources..
  • MVPS Hosts file => The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites etc.
  • Use a Firewall => I can not stress enough how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. See Computer Safety On line - Software Firewalls to learn why. I recommend any of these:

  • UPDATE!-UPDATE!-UPDATE! => This is, without a doubt, THE MOST IMPORTANT element in keeping your computer free of malware. Set Windows AND all of your anti-malware tools for Automatic Updates.
  • Delete temp files =>Clear the contents of your Temporary (Temp) folders, Temporary Internet Files (TIF), Cookies, and Recycle bin for all users of your machine. (do not delete the temp folders themselves). This can be done either manually or by using using a program such as CCleaner. IMPORTANT: clearing the contents of the temp/Internet/cookies/recycle bin should be done on a regular basis.

it is very rewarding to see that your computer is clean. Now we urge you to stand up and be counted! Document your experience, and by doing so, launch a complaint against the makers of malware. You can make a difference. Click on the Malware Complaints icon in my signature and support our cause.

Let me know how it goes with the file/Outlook issue. I think we've pretty much eliminated the possibility of Malware so if the problem persists we will have to look elsewhere.
