Haven't been able to block "Ads by Adsite" popups

Unread postby susanfloro » December 22nd, 2007, 1:28 pm

I'm using Mozilla Foxfire with Adblock Plus enabled. I've installed Spybot SD Resident. I've used the free version of Adware. I've used Wise Registry Cleaner and Wise Disk Cleaner. Even after all this popups with "Ads by Adsite" in the title bar keep poping up. What else do you suggest I do? I've attached my Hijack this log file.

Hi! Welcome to the MWR forums.
My name is Scotty. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research.

Please be patient as my posts to you have to be checked before I reply, so they make take longer.

Please make a uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here in a reply.

Hello

Remove programs from Add/Remove Programs List
Please go to:
  • Start
  • Control Panel
  • Add/Remove Programs
Find and remove these programs (if they are present)

  • Search Assistant Adssite

I see that Viewpoint is installed. Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player’s components. You can disable this using the Viewpoint Manager Control Panel found in the Windows Control Panel menu. By selecting Disable auto‑updating for the Viewpoint Manager ‑‑ the player will no longer attempt to check for updates. Anything that is installed without your consent is suspect. Read what Viewpoint says and make your own decision.
To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint. Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player. The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information. CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without user's approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This may change, read Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware.
I recommend that you remove the Viewpoint products; however, decide for yourself. To uninstall the the Viewpoint components (Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player):
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  3. In Add or Remove Programs, highlight Viewpoint Media Player, click Remove.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner. You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:

      + Extended(If available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:

      + Scan Archives
      + Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

With the exception of Internet Explorer, which is needed for the Kaspersky Scan, keep ALL programs closed until the scan is complete. This includes your anti-virus. Once you have installed the Scanner, and the updated definitions, you can disconnect from the Internet.

Re: Haven't been able to block "Ads by Adsite" popups

Unread postby Scotty » January 15th, 2008, 8:35 am

Hi

Navigate to and delete the following file (if it is present):

Files:
C:\Documents and Settings\Susan\Local Settings\Temp\s2b4.4.exe

You may wish to keep hold of the Kaspersky Online Scan as an extra on-demand virus-scanner.
If not you can uninstall it through Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs

Post a new HijackThis log and tell me if you are currently having any problems.

Hi there,

I've done what you suggested but the pop-up windows by AdSite still come up. Any other suggestions?

Thanks for your time,

Susan

Hi

Let's take a closer look.

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.

  1. Close all applications and windows.
  2. Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  3. When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  4. Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt in your next reply

Re: Haven't been able to block "Ads by Adsite" popups

Unread postby Scotty » January 20th, 2008, 3:08 pm

Hi

Disable Teatimer
First:

  • Right click Spybot in the System Tray (looks like a calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • Choose Exit Spybot S&D Resident

Second:

  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, check Advanced Mode
  • Go To Left Panel, Click Tools, then also in left panel, click Resident
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • Uncheck the box labeled Resident Tea-Timer and OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.

Disable TrojanHunter
It is a good program but it can interfere with our fixes, so please disable it and when you're all clean you can re-enable it!

  • Go to TrojanHunter Guard in the lower right corner of your screen. It is a light blue magnifying glass icon with a red handle.
  • Right click it and select Settings.
  • Uncheck Load at startup and Enabled.

Delete bad services
Please copy (Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the following text in the quote to Notepad. Save it as "All Files" and name it FixServices.bat Please save it on your desktop.

@echo off
sc stop "NetCom3 Service (Netcom3)"
sc delete "NetCom3 Service (Netcom3)"
del Fixservices.bat
exit

Double click FixServices.bat. A window will open and close. This is normal.

Navigate to and delete the following files and/or folders (if they are present):

Files:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\adssite-remove.exe

Folders:
C:\Program Files\Netcom3 Cleaner

Run HijackThis, select Do a system scan only and place checks against the following entries (if they are still present):

    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
    R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SpyClean] C:\Program Files\Netcom3 Cleaner\SpyClean.exe
    O23 - Service: NetCom3 Service (Netcom3) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Netcom3 Cleaner\PSCMonitor.exe (file missing)

WITH ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED Click on Fix Checked and exit HijackThis.

Now reboot the computer and post a new HijackThis log. And let me know if you are still having problems. It would also be a good idea if you post a HijackThis log from each one of the accounts. Do them one at a time so they can be checked.

Hi

Remove programs from Add/Remove Programs List
Please go to:
  • Start
  • Control Panel
  • Add/Remove Programs
Find and remove these programs (if they are present)

  • Mozilla Firefox

  • Download OTMoveIt by OldTimer from here
  • Double click on OTMoveIt to start OTMoveIt
    Image
  • Untick the option to Unregister Dll's and Ocx's (1)
  • Select the contents of the below codebox, then press Ctrl+C to copy it to the clipboard
    Code: Select all
    C:\Documents and Settings\Susan\Application Data\Mozilla
    C:\Program files\Mozilla Firefox
    C:\Documents and Settings\Susan\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla
    C:\Documents and Settings\lb1d\Application Data\Mozilla
    C:\Documents and Settings\Rose\Application Data\Mozilla
    C:\Documents and Settings\Yasuko\Application Data\Mozilla
    C:\Documents and Settings\lb1d\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla
    C:\Documents and Settings\Rose\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla
    C:\Documents and Settings\Yasuko\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla

  • In OTMoveIt Right click on the box labelled Paste List of Files/Folders to be Moved
  • Click Paste (2)
  • Click MoveIt! (3)
  • Copy and paste the contents of the results box (4) as a reply to this topic.

Navigate to this folder

C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch

and delete all Firefox* files.

Please go here
http://www.billsway.com/vbspage/

Scroll to the bottom third of the page where you will find the download link.

Input adssite and it should produce a log of EVERY instance of adssite in you regitry.

Please post that log here with a new HijackThis log and the OTMoveIt report.
