No sorry, the camera worked before. I just tried it again to see if it still picked it up.
Not any other devices that I have at hand.

Have you looked and tried everything they suggest at this site??
As windows detects your camera I don't think it's a windows issue either at this point.

Follow there guide to the letter and see if it helps. I have googled for a day or so and I'm afraid the listings for MP3 players not being detected are endless.

I am going to recommend another forum that may be of more help that I can at this point.
You can show them this thread so they can see what we have tried and what malware was removed.

Download and Install a HOSTS File
A Hosts file is a plain text file which prevents your computer from connecting to malware and spyware sites by redirecting the connection request to 127.0.0.1, which is your local address. If you use a proxy server, or if you are on AOL, be sure to read the special instructions.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure
1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
2. Click on the Security tab
3. Click the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
4. Click on Default Level and click Ok
5. Click on the Custom Level button.

Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt

When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.

6. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.


Here's a site with great advise on how to AVOID malware. Much easier to do than removing it.

Thanks, all your help has been very much appreciated and I will make a donation as you have spent quite a time doing this.
As for the mp3 player, I did not really think about the fact that the camera was always detected and the players not and just thought it was an altered runnings of the p.c due to malware. I will check all the things you suggest and I am sure this will work fine after a good search.

One last thing, I think I was initially infected when I was downloading some games for my kid and would you now suggest avoiding anything like this?
Is Mcafee a decent security suite to help avoid this in the future?

That really depends on what you downloaded and from where. If you remember the site be sure not to go there again. We all must always be careful of what we download from where. If you don't know the site and trust it 110%. Don't download . If it is cracked software ALWAYS avoid this type of file. There's almost {99.9% of the time } always a stinger attached that's going to get you.
Some of the tools I suggested in my all clean speech will help you avoid such things. Both the host file and sitehound help you avoid connecting to bad sites. So you couldn't download from there.
Sitehound will warn you not to connect for one reason or another and give you the option.
The host file will just cause your browser not to connect to the site. It is a list of known bad sites.

Is Mcafee a decent security suite to help avoid this in the future?

McAfee is decent ...Of course that depends on whom you ask. There isn't one anti Virus solution out there that is going to protect us from everything all the time. What is important is that what ever anti virus program you use that you keep a subscription to it so it's updated at least weekly. If you were to choose another Anti Virus program and it doesn't have a firewall with it you will need to get one of those installed also. There are a few good free firewalls out there.
