shamrock,
Next time, don't post twice.

Anything you do with this operating system can break it.
Since it has not been supported by Microsoft for a long time now, there are many known vulnerabilities that cannot be fixed.
Make no mistake - If your data on that machine matters, Windows ME has to be replaced.
And you need to understand that fixing anything on it could possibly render it unbootable. Helpers don't want to deal with it. They view it as wasted time, since it has no future.

The main issue in day to day operation is that it cannot tolerate many simultaneous running processes, and extra efforts must be made to remove everything from startup that is not vital.
You also have to be extra careful not to run too many applications at once (3 may be too many) or you can overrun the available housekeeping and corrupt the system.
If you understand what I am saying, and agree to take the chances, I will try to help out. I don't know whether or not we will be successful.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Retrieve the List of Installed programs Using HJT
Open HijackThis, click Open The Misc Tools Section. Then scroll down the list if you need to, click Open Uninstall Manager and Save List...
The List of installed programs will automatically be saved as uninstall_list.txt in your HiJackThis folder. In addition, the list opens in Notepad so you can also save as another name in another location if you wish. Please paste the contents into your next reply.
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.

Hello, askey127, I am aware that winME is an old operating system but unfortunatly I have an old PC and I'm on a very limited income.

The PC was given to me by a friend a few years ago and has worked ok so far and I've managed to keep it relativity virus free.

Thankyou for your assistance and I'm very grateful for any help you can give me.

I did not realise that I'd done a duplicate posting, as I'd just clicked on the 'If no expert has replied within 3 days' option, and thought it would be a good idea to provide an upto date HJT log.

I assumed that it would just highlight my original request for help.

Here is the list you asked for, I think I've done this right.

Hi, I deleted all programes stated and installed Winpatrol.

There was a slight problem with AVG after I deleted Spybot, at reboot I had a message saying, 'AVG could not initialize AVG antivirus kernel Interface. Application cannot run'.

I shut PC down for a while and restarted it, AVG started up fine after this.

When I tried to run the cmd line you gave me , I got the following message:

'Windows cannot find 'cmd'. You may have typed name incorrectly in the Run Dialog box or another open program cannot find a System File. To find a file use the search option'.

( I copied and pasted your cmd line into the run dialog box just to make sure I got it right).

I did a search for mfc71.dll and 4 where found at the following locations:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM

C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Antivir personalEdition classic\UPGRADE\basic

C:\Program Files\Grimesoft\AVG Free

D:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM

Here's the HighJackThis Log you asked for.

Many thanks,

Can I jusst ask why you wanted me to remove Spybot/Spyware Blaster etc ? As I've been led to believe these are needed to secure my PC from Spyware.

shamrock,
Sure. The versions of Spybot and SpywareBlaster you had were old versions that are no longer supported.
With SuperAntiSpyware installed, you do not need Spybot or Ad-Aware. We are trying to keep the machine as sparse as possible.
We need to remove every extra application we can from the startup list.
Do you use Yahoo Messenger ?
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove log items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis (or reveal.exe).
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)
O16 - DPF: {74D05D43-3236-11D4-BDCD-00C04F9A3B61} (HouseCall Control) - http://a840.g.akamai.net/7/840/537/2004 ... scan53.cab
O16 - DPF: {665585FD-2068-4C5E-A6D3-53AC3270ECD4} (FileSharingCtrl Class) - http://appdirectory.messenger.msn.com/A ... ngctrl.cab
O16 - DPF: Yahoo! Chat - http://us.chat1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/ ... 1/chat.cab
O16 - DPF: {8E0D4DE5-3180-4024-A327-4DFAD1796A8D} (MessengerStatsClient Class) - http://messenger.zone.msn.com/binary/Me ... Client.cab

If you don't mind opening the Printer Toolbox manually, check this item also
F1 - win.ini: run=hpfsched

If you don't neeed the Yahoo Messenger to start automatically, check each of these:
O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\Run: [Yahoo! Pager] "C:\PROGRAM FILES\YAHOO!\MESSENGER\ypager.exe" -quiet (User 'Default user')
O9 - Extra button: Yahoo! Messenger - {E5D12C4E-7B4F-11D3-B5C9-0050045C3C96} - C:\PROGRAM FILES\YAHOO!\MESSENGER\YAHOOMESSENGER.EXE
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Yahoo! Messenger - {E5D12C4E-7B4F-11D3-B5C9-0050045C3C96} - C:\PROGRAM FILES\YAHOO!\MESSENGER\YAHOOMESSENGER.EXE

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites to your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from accidentally running or downloading known malicious programs. Available from http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
After the installation, click Download Latest Protection Updates. When it finishes, click Enable All Protection.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Run CCleaner Cleaning Scan. This will remove all Temp files, cookies, and Internet History.
If it's not already running, Start CCleaner.
Click on the Cleaner block on the left. Choose the Windows tab.
Click the Run Cleaner button. This process could take a while. When CCleaner shows how much has been removed, cleaning is finished.
Exit CCleaner by clicking on the X button in the upper right of the CCleaner window.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HiJackThis Log

Reboot your computer. Start HijackThis .

Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply.
Tell me what problems you are still having with the machine.

Hi askey127, I've done all you asked. two questions though,

1. do I need to still do anything about that cmd thing you asked me to do?

2. When I installed Spyware Blaster it said that my Internet Explorer settings where insecure.

The current setting for 'Initialize and Script Active X controls' is set at Prompt.

The setting should be...Disabled. Do you agree?

The pc is now running ok, AVG has started everytime, and there have been no messages about 'spyware.w32.fixer' appearing, so all seems good.

Here is the Hijackthis log you asked for:

shamrock,
ActiveX controls are programs that a website can run on your computer.
Firefox is somewhat safer in this regard, since it does not ever permit running ActiveX controls.
I would use Firefox for most surfing, and only use IE when Firefox doesn't work, and then only on trusted web sites.
On that basis, I would leave your IE ActiveX settings as is.

If it's not important to you, I would Uninstall the Yahoo Toolbar

With all the changes we have made, I would run the Disk Defragmenter (I think it's under Accessories, System Tools).

Good Luck going forward. Glad we could be of some help.
