Hello, and welcome to the forum.

My name is Simon V., and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

I'm afraid I have unpleasant news for you. You have been infected by W32/Sdbot-ADD. This infection allows outsiders complete access to every keystroke, account, and password you use while on this machine.

IF this computer has been used for any kind of important data, my best recommendation is to disconnect from the internet, reformat the entire drive and reinstall your operating system and applications.

We can likely clean the infected files off the computer, and if you wish we will attempt to do so, but we cannot be sure that the infection didn't do something to your system to reduce the system security. If that's the case, you could be subject to another attack or takeover as soon as you reconnect to the internet, even after removal of the infection.

The decision whether to reformat or not should be based on what you use the computer for. If the computer has been used for any important data, you are strongly advised to do the following, immediately:

  • Disconnect the infected computer from the internet and from any networked computers until the computer can be cleaned.
  • Back up all important data on the machine. Do not back up any applications (programs) or executable files (.dll, .exe, .scr, .bat, .cmd, .vbs, .sys). Those should be reinstalled from the original CD's or websites.
  • If you have used this computer for shopping, banking, or any transactions relating to your financial well being, call all of your banks, credit card companies and financial institutions, informing them that you may be a victim of identity theft, and to put a watch on your accounts or change all your account numbers.
  • From a clean computer, change ALL your online passwords - for ISP login, email, banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, online companies, and any online forums or groups you belong to.
  • DO NOT change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker will get the new password and transaction information.
  • Take any other steps you think appropriate for an attempted identity theft.

To help you understand more, please take some time to read the following articles:

What are Remote Access Trojans and why are they dangerous
How do I respond to a possible identity theft and how do I prevent it
When should do a reformat and reinstallation of my OS
Where to backup your files
How to backup your files in Windows XP
Restoring your backups

In your next reply, let me know how you want to proceed.

Thank you very much for getting back to me. In front of me I have the original CDs for:

"Drivers and Utilities Already Installed on Your Computer: For Reinstalling Dell Latitude System Software"

"Reinstallation CD: Microsoft Windows XP Professional Including Service Pack 2"

"Microsoft Office 2003"

I would like to back up my information and redo everything. Please advise as to how to do this. The most important information I have on this computer is (luckily) my music, art equipment, and vital school documents.

I am going to find someone with a portable hard drive to back up information once you give the go-ahead (if you could send directions too that'd be great).

Please advise, and thank you for your help so far.

Also, where I am, it might be hard to get a portable hard drive- is it possible to back everything up with CDs (if so, which ones?) A second point- I have about 20 gb of music (the bulk of what I need to save)-- please let me know the easiest way to do this.

Thanks for your help,

And another question for you (I hope I'm not bogging you down):

I have an ipod with all of the music and information that I want from my itunes: is there a way to use this to hold onto my itunes information (and to put it back onto my computer) for when I reinstall itunes onto the comp? If not, please advise as to what would be the best way to organize the music (the original sources of the music are scattered across the computer, and are not necessarily just from CDs/hard copies I put onto the computer or music downloaded from itunes itself), and would take a very long time just to find all these sources.

I have "Nero" to make copying onto DVDs easier using my DVD R/RW. All in all, I'd like to completely clean this sucker out, reinstall everything, and then reinstall many of my documents, music/media, some random programs (I don't have the disc anymore for my photoshop).

Again, thank you so much for your help- I've taken your advice and have called all appropriate parties so far.

Hi :)

It would be easiest to backup your data to an external hard drive. If you don't have one, dvd's are a good alternative, but it'll take longer. You can read the last 3 links in my previous post for more information.

For your iTunes question, I'm not sure. I use the program myself, do you mean the information needed for all your lists to display properly? What information is on your iPod exactly, and what information do you want to backup from your computer?

Hi-thanks for getting back to me. What I am speaking of is definitely the information to display the lists properly (I've got a thing for 'playlists'), as well as all of the music/media on it. On my ipod are the following: a ton (close to 20 gb) of music (important), cover art (important), some maps (not important), and an episode of '24' (also not important).

I would like to backup from my computer:
-anything (feasible) relating to my itunes
-word documents
-photographs (not vital)
-Adobe reader/photoshop
-some other small programs (nothing 100% vital)

Also, someone mentioned the sites: "www.humyo.com" and "www.backup.com" as alternatives for an actual external hard drive. Are these legitimate/do they work?

Also, I'm close to being ready to clean up/wipe out/start anew.

Again, thank you so much for your help so far-- you have no idea how much of a godsend this forum and your advice has been for me so far!

Hi :)

Those sites look legitimate to me, never used one before though.

For iTunes, have a look at these sites:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302392

Let me know whether that helped.
