Vundo/Virtumonde been on laptop for some weeks..

Unread postby SoxmisUK » January 11th, 2008, 1:35 pm

My brother owns a laptop, and his son accepted a download from a friend in msn and thats where the trouble started.

They have since been plagued by regular pop ups since and im a fairy competent User and have tried all I can to fix the problem before coming here with no success.

I have so far:

Updated Java.
Ran the latest ad-aware scans.
Installed New Eset scanner.
also
VundoFix
and in safe mode: Virtumondobegone
and online anti virus scanners and Trojan Hunter.

All of them seem to leave something unmolested after they attempt to clean the infection, I'm presuming thats a memory resident part of the Virtumonde that must be undergoing a name change to protect itself. However it does it, I cant seem to find a programme that isolates all the files and then kills them.

They (All the above Progs..) have all detected Virtumonde but not a single one of them has been able to fix the problem despite me following instructions on their proper use to the letter. (Yep, Disabled Rollbacks too..) Even now IE7 is generating links to sites that seem to always start with the ~ symbol like "~ Win Cash - Window Internet Explorer ~ and of course these pages pop up randomly every time surfing is attempted!

I have naturally been looking for a single - use tool to remove the problem but have discovered through trial and error that its not going to be that simple at all.

Time to eat humble pie and face the fact that im not going to fix this oin my own. So, I have downloaded "Hijack this.." and read the forum rules titled "Before Posting" thoroughly.

I really would appreciate any help that you guys can give me, his laptops a working (Earning..) laptop, and a format is totally out of the question.

Here is my HJT Startup List followed by the HJT Log. (I really have no idea what to look for, am willing to learn have terrible eyesight and hope I miss nothing..) Thanks far in advance.

John.

Thanks for that sp93, but I already tried Vundofix, and though it detected Vundo it too couldnt fix the problem popups still here!

Maybe its because I am running XP Media edition on a laptop with IE7 .. ?

I really need help understanding the Hijack this log and then maybe I can get it fixed myself or even with someones help. Thank you for suggesting though.

B'rgds..

I thought I should post that have found and FIXED the problem after all!!

No More popups!

I looked in MSCONFIG and brought up the Startup Tab.

In there I looked for any programes that load at windows startup and there were 2 unidentified programs one of them was untitled and had a blank entry for the path and name. I unticked that.

Then, I found another programme that was loading in at the start too called GBKJWKR.EXE and this was installed to the C:\windows\system32 folder.. I unticked this too.

I had read that often (Though NOT ALWAYS..) that Malware will load itself into the C:\windows\system32 folder to disguise itself as an important file..

I rebooted and then checked out my browsing and all the popups have stopped!

I then enabled all the plug-ins again in IE7 to prove that it wasnt a malicious plug-in and my browser now behaves itself perfectly!!

Hope this helps anyone with the same problem to track down their bit of nasty Malware!!
