Unread postby pearson1972 » January 5th, 2008, 2:21 pm

Help, I used Internet Explorer on my brother's desktop and now CiD pop-ups are getting on everyone's nerves! How do I rid his computer of this mess? :? Also his computer is running way toooo slow for anyone to enjoy being on the internet. :? :( We previously had dial-up(never again) and it ran sooo slow you didn't want to use it, but now we have high-speed internet and its still running slow but not as slow and it freezes up way too much for comfort  ....HELP!

Please note that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

If you think you have similar problems, please post a log in the HJT forum and wait for help.

Hi pearson1972

I'm Gary R, I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Please observe these rules while we work:
  • Perform all actions in the order given.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Stick with it till you're given the all clear.
  • Remember, absence of symptoms does not mean the infection is all gone.
If you can do these things, everything should go smoothly.
  • Please note you'll need to have Administrator privileges to perform the fixes. (XP accounts are Administrator by default)
It may be helpful to you to print out or take a copy of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

LimeWire

I'd like you to read the Guidelines for P2P Programs where we explain why it's not a good idea to have them.

Also available here.

My recommendation is you go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the programs listed above (in red).

I also recommend you uninstall WeatherBug

OK, now lets get down to removing your infection.

Download NoLop by Skate_Punk_21 to your Desktop.
  • Close any other programs you have running as this will require a reboot.
  • Double click NoLop.exe to run it.
  • Now click the button labelled Search and Destroy.
  • your computer will now be scanned for infected files.
  • When scanning is finished you will be prompted to reboot only if infected, Click OK.
  • Now click the REBOOT button.
  • A Message should popup from NoLop. If not, double click the program again and it will finish.
  • Please Post the contents of C:\NoLop.log along with a fresh HijackThis log.
--If you receive an error, "mscomctl.ocx or one of its dependencies are not correctly registered," please download mscomctl.ocx to your system32 folder then rerun the program. --

Thanks for getting back with me so fast. I've tried deleting weatherbug but that thing won't go away from my add/change programs listing. Also I've noticed another thing that doesnt seem to want to go away....it's titled "CiD help". When you try to remove it is asks you to copy some numbers in a box to make sure your a person and not a computer, some security feature I guess. Once you do that the damn thing tells you to reboot, and when I do that which takes at least 10 minutes to fully come on, its still there! Also I ran the NoLop! program earlier before I sent my first message to seek help with CiD and it said their are no infected files found which can't be true since those CiD popped up again. I'm running it again to be sure since you told me to run it.....I've completed the run and it said "No infection files found"....now what?

OK, I need you to send me a startup list.

Creating a Startup List
  • Open HJT, and click on Config followed by Misc Tools.
  • Check List also minor sections (full) and List empty sections (complete) before clicking on Generate StartUpList log.
  • A window will open asking for permission to create a log, answer Yes.
  • Notepad will open a text file, Save it please. By default it will be named startuplist.txt and saved to your HJT folder.

Post me the list please
