Unread postby starter005 » December 26th, 2007, 9:22 pm

Hi, guys
My Internet Explorer has been freezing up the last week. I ran spybot and it found a "wwwsearch.confboot" problem. I deleted it but the problem with IE7 remains. Here is my HiJack:

Hi! :hello2: and welcome to the Malware Removal forums.
My name is John Brouwer - if it helps, you can call me John for short. I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

HijackThis logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need
your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that happens.

Please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will working be on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Finally, please make a uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:
    • Start HijackThis
    • Click on the Config button
    • Click on the Misc Tools button
    • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
    • Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Save the file to your desktop and post the contents in a reply to this topic. Also post another HijackThis log as it's been very long since you posted the other one.
Greets, John.

Re: IE7 freezes

Unread postby John B. » January 4th, 2008, 6:03 am

Hi Ralph,

The log looks clean. Lets clean up some things and do some scans.

P2P Warning!
Please note that as long as you are using any form of Peer-to-Peer networking and downloading files from non-documented sources, you can expect infestations of malware to occur
Once upon a time, P2P file sharing was fairly safe. That is no longer true. You may continue to use P2P sharing at your own risk; however, please keep in mind that this practice may be the source of your current malware infestation
Additional information on the safety of Peer to Peer programs themselves is here :
Clean/Infected P2P Programs
Please decide if you want to keep using P2P so I can put it in my next speech if you don't want to keep it.

Step 1: Delete old program
  • Click Start
  • Go to Control Panel
  • Go to Add/Remove Programs
  • Find and click Remove for the following (if present):

    Java(TM) 6 Update 2

There's also one other installed version of Java but that's the development version used by developers. If you don't use it also remove this program:
    Java(TM) SE Development Kit 6 Update 2
If you do use it please remove the following programs and install the newest version of the development kit:
    Java(TM) 6 Update 3
    Java(TM) SE Development Kit 6 Update 2
Step 2: Update HijackThis and remove entries
You aren't running the latest version of HijackThis. Please update it and post a fresh log.
  • Download HJTInstall.exe to your Desktop.
  • Doubleclick HJTInstall.exe to install it.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customi ... ch/ie.html

    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

  • Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
  • Click on the "Fix Checked" button
  • When completed, close the application.
Step 3: Run CCleaner
CCleaner will remove everything from the temp/temporary folders but please note that it will not make back ups!
  • Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours
  • Then select the items you wish to clean up.
    • In the Windows Tab:
      • Clean all entries in the Internet Explorer section except Cookies
      • Clean all the entries in the Windows Explorer section
      • Clean all entries in the System section
      • Clean all entries in the Advanced section
      • Clean any others that you choose
    • In the Applications Tab:
      • Clean all except cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it
      • Clean all in the Opera section if you use it
      • Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section
      • Clean any others that you choose
  • Click the Run Cleaner button.
  • A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
  • Click OK and it will scan and clean your system.
  • Click exit when done.
  • If it asks you to reboot at the end, click NO
CCleaner should be run with the above settings for each User Account!

Step 4: Run Kaspersky Online Scan
Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky,
Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
      Scan Archives Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
      Select My Computer
  • The program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
Step 5: Download and Run ComboFix
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Step 6: Post logs
Please post the following logs in a reply to this topic (use multiple posts if needed):
  • Fresh HijackThis log
  • Kaspersky log
  • ComboFix log

John, the link you sent me for Kaspersky brought me to the 30 day free trial and when I went to download the anti-virus 7.0 I got a message that said it was incompatible with Comodo firewall and also norton's anti-virus and to uninstall them. Did I go to the wrong spot?

Hi Ralph,

The website should open like this:

Then you should click on Kaspersky Online Scanner and follow what I said in my previous post.

Re: IE7 freezes

Unread postby John B. » January 6th, 2008, 8:51 am

Hi Ralph,

All the logs are completely clean.

First of all, you didn't do this:
quote="John B."]Step 1: Delete old program
  • Click Start
  • Go to Control Panel
  • Go to Add/Remove Programs
  • Find and click Remove for the following (if present):

    Java(TM) 6 Update 2

There's also one other installed version of Java but that's the development version used by developers. If you don't use it also remove this program:
    Java(TM) SE Development Kit 6 Update 2
If you do use it please remove the following programs and install the newest version of the development kit:
    Java(TM) 6 Update 3
    Java(TM) SE Development Kit 6 Update 2
[/quote]

In your Uninstall log there are two version of Norton: Norton Anti-Virus and Norton Internet Security. Which one do you use?

Did you install any new software, hardware or drivers before Internet Explorer started freezing? Did you install an update for it or update to Internet Explorer 7? Does it freeze randomly or only with specific websites?

Please answer all my questions.

Greets, John.

The anti-virus that I'm currently using is provided by my ATT/Yahoo browser. It is "Norton Security Online Version 10.2.0.30 for ATT Yahoo." I used to use Norton's prior to getting DSL, could these be remnants?

No new software, hardware or drivers have been installed. Originally I went to the microsoft support page and there appears to be compatibility problems with IE7 and XP. I uninstalled IE7, went back to IE6, still had the problem and reinstalled IE7. It continued to freeze so I thought I'd contact you. Is there a way to reinstall IE7? I don't have a disc because I purchased this online pre-loaded.

Hi Ralph,

Does the Norton you run have only Anti-Virus functions or also a Firewall function? The question I ask is that your uninstall log shows both Comodo and Norton Internet Security. They both have firewall functions and that can make your system unstable. Please make sure that you have only ne firewall enabled!

Can you browse websites or does it freeze immediately. If the last one: Please check your security software if it's configured right to allow Internet Explorer.

I will ask the experts how to reinstall Internet Explorer 7.

quote;

While surfing, IE7 will freeze randomly

If you are experiencing application freezing in Internet Explorer 7, common reasons for this could be:
Incompatible Browser Extension
Add-ons
Spyware or Malware
The first step in troubleshooting this issue is to run Internet Explorer in "No Add-ons" mode. Here's how:

Go to Start>> All Programs>> System Tools
Click Internet Explorer (No Add-ons)
Restart Internet Explorer. If it runs smoothly, then it can be determined that one of the add-ons was causing the problem. You will need to continue troubleshooting this issue until you find out which add-on was causing the problem. You will need to do this using the Manage Add-ons feature. Here's how:

Note: You will need to reverse the above steps to place Internet Explorer 7 back in regular mode for troubleshooting purposes.

Start Internet Explorer 7
Go to Tools>> Programs tab>> Manage Add-ons button
Under the option "Add-ons that have been used by Internet Explorer", you will see a list of all of the add-ons installed on your system.
Click the name of an enabled add-on and then click Disable under the Settings option.
Note: You may want to speed this process by disabling 3 or more add-ons at a time.

Close Internet Explorer 7 and restart it. If it runs smoothly, you have successfully identified the offending add-on. If the problem persists, repeat the above steps until the offending add-on is identified.
Once the incompatible add-on is identified, it may be necessary to uninstall it using Start>> Control Panel>> Add/Remove Programs. Or better yet, use the programs built in uninstaller (if available). In many cases, updating the program to its latest version solves many of these issues.

Hey, John

It would appear you're a genius!!
I didn't realize that the Norton's AV supplied by my browser had a firewall in it. I uninstalled Comodo and now it seems to be working fine.

If you don't think the other Norton installs are needed that showed up in the list, let me know and I will uninstall them also.

Just lucky I thought of the fact that it could be your security apps. Thanks though.

I'm not an expert on Norton and if everything is running fine now I think it's best to keep it like this. Just make sure that if you're ever going to change from Norton to another program that you uninstall every instance of Norton and run this tool:
ttp://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsg ... enDocument

This is my normal post for when you are clear - which you now are - or seem to be.
Please advise of any problems you still have. If you think you're clean please give one more reply so that I can archive this topic.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Remove dangerous tool - Because some tools we used can be dangerous if they're used in the wrong way we have to remove some of them. Please remove the following tool:
    ComboFix
  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  • Visit Microsoft's Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://update.microsoft.com/ regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. A article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here:
Computer Safety on line - Anti-Malware
  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected will reduce dramatically.

>> Here << you can see how you can help us.

May your God go with you..

John.
