Registry Traces

Unread postby Jack » December 27th, 2007, 4:35 pm

Hi. I have a problem which I hope you may be able to help me with. When I run A squared, it flags up two traces....Trace.registry.Winkeeper.

The registry locations are

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\zlportio\Enum-->Count
and the same location but \Enum-->NextInstance

Both have the registry type REG_DWORD and both values are 0x00000001(1)

If I delete the entries and run A squared it no longer registers a problem, however the entries appear on reboot. Having taken advice from the guys at PC Advisor, they suggest posting a HJT log file. I do not have (or have had) Winkeeper and after checking what zlportio does, ran Shields Up, which suggests all ports are secure, and Rogue Remover which I believe has dealt with Winkeeper problems in the past. All other installed spyware apps do not pick up these traces and it may be a false positive, however there are no installed games other than the games that come with XP and I can find no Motorola references anywhere on the machine. Have looked in msconfig and have found no references that seem unusual.
If there is any other system info you need then please contact me.

Re: Registry Traces

Unread postby 'KotaGuy » January 4th, 2008, 11:26 am

Not much in your HijackThis log... just an ActiveX Control to get rid of.

Run and scan with HijackThis and place a check beside the following:

O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} - http://software-dl.real.com/113051abee3 ... xIE601.cab

Close all open browsers/windows and click the Fix button.

Copy the following quote box into a new Notepad document...

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\zlportio]

Save it to your Desktop as fixreg.bat. Save it as File Type: AllFiles(not as a text document or it won't work). Double click fixreg.bat and answer Yes when asked to merge it into the registry.

Reboot.

Run A2 through a scan and let me know if its still there. Also post a new HijackThis log please.

KotaGuy.Thanks for your reply. Deleted the ActiveX Control but after pasting the quote and saving it as fixreg.bat , I double clicked it and nothing happened (it is saved as all files type) I tried it again and the command prompt box flashed very briefly, and nothing seems to happen...........any thoughts ? I'm not getting asked to merge it into the registry.

Re: Registry Traces

Unread postby 'KotaGuy » January 9th, 2008, 11:48 am

Sorry... must've missed getting the notif for your reply.

Anyways... it sounds like the batch ran properly... it doesn't take long for it to run and won't seem to do anything visible except maybe a quick popup of a DOS box like you've described. Strange that it didn't ask you to confirm though.

Is A2 still detecting the reg entry?

Re: Registry Traces

Unread postby Jack » January 9th, 2008, 12:11 pm

KotaGuy.....yep, still getting the Winkeeper trace with A2, even though on reboot I scan the registry with several different reg scanners A2 is the only one that doesn't like the registry entry and insists that there is a problem there. The box did flash, but I'm not sure that anything happened as the registry entry is still the same.
When I delete the entries in the registry and scan again there is no problem with A2, but they appear on reboot. There is an entry that appears above the two deleted ones which says

Name 0
Type REG_SZ
Data Root\LEGACY_ZLPORTIO\0000

Also what does the little box with a red "ab" denote ? The "bad " entries have boxes with blue configurations in them. Can anything be gleaned from this info.......I was trying to work backwards to see if it was some leftover info from an old app or even what prog might use zlportio.......is there something that could pinpoint that. If it is a false positive then I would still like to know what the registry entry refers to and if not needed maybe could delete it some other way.

Thanks for your help.

I'm really not familiar with A2... so I don't know how it reports what it finds.

Is there anyway that you can see that it can create a log for you to post?

KotaGuy.. Not much to go on..

a-squared Free - Version 3.1
Last update: 09/01/2008 16:43:37

Scan settings:

Objects: Memory, Traces, Cookies
Scan archives: On
Heuristics: On
ADS Scan: On

Scan start: 09/01/2008 16:56:41

Value: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\zlportio\Enum --> Count detected: Trace.Registry.Winkeeper
Value: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\zlportio\Enum --> NextInstance detected: Trace.Registry.Winkeeper

Scanned

Files: 1685
Traces: 349696
Cookies: 20
Processes: 48

Found

Files: 0
Traces: 2
Cookies: 0
Processes: 0
Registry keys: 0

Scan end: 09/01/2008 16:59:48
Scan time: 0:03:07

This is the report of a quick scan.......a full system scan does not pick up any more traces than the quick scan does. My question is really why do these entries appear on start up and does anybody else have these registry entries....am I alone !!!!!!

Not sure why those are there... I'm assuming you've never installed zlportio.

Lets try that regfix differently in case something went wonky with the last one. It really should prompt for confirmation.

Delete the previous batch file.

Copy/paste the following Code box(starting from REGEDIT4) into a new Notepad document.

Code: Select all
REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\zlportio]

Save it as fixreg.bat. Save it as File Type: All Files.

Double click fixreg.bat and answer Yes when asked to merge it into the registry.

Reboot.

Let me know how that goes.

KotaGuy....Tried the new regfix and it did exactly the same thing i.e. not much, so taking the bull by the horns, I deleted the whole zlportio key and all the subkeys (after creating a restore point) Rebooted and no zlportio key to be seen. Ran an A2 scan and it is clear. All seems well at this time so I will attach a new HJT log. Can you tell me if this looks ok now and is there much difference to the previous log. There seems to be several Symantec entries which wont go even after using the Norton removal tool. I got rid of Norton last year as it made a take over bid for my PC. It is a truly invasive product and having AVG is so much easier. Is it easier just to leave these entries.......none of the registry cleaners that I use flag it up as a problem so perhaps if it ain't broke.............

Ha! I'm a dummy :D

Looking back at my instructions I know why the regfix files wouldn't work. Was having you save them as a .bat and not a .reg like they should have been. Brainfart on my part :)

Sounds like you got it sussed though

Your log looks good. If you want to get rid of the Symantec entries run and scan with HijackThis and place checks beside the following:

Close all open browsers/windows and click the Fix button.

Reboot and post a new HijackThis log please.

KG...........Thanks for that. I have fixed the 5 Symantec entries, but am not sure about the ALCXMNTR.EXE entry as Win Patrol says its a Realtek Audio event monitor..........anything to do with Norton ?. There is Realtek Audio on this system and ALCXMNTR.EXE runs at startup so perhaps I'll leave. Perhaps I'll try a selective startup and see if it makes any difference when it runs.
Finally, is it ok to leave the Symantec download manager there.....its one of the 016 entries, the only Symantec entry that I can see.Judging by the HJT description perhaps not....please advise

Re: Registry Traces

Unread postby 'KotaGuy » January 10th, 2008, 10:11 am

Morning Jack!

In regards to ACLXMNTR.EXE... no doesn't have anything to do with Symantec... but I suggested fixing it as its a monitoring program from Realtek...

http://www.castlecops.com/s180-Alcxmntr_exe.html

I've fixed that line on many machines and have seen no adverse effects by doing so.

As for the symantec 016... you can fix that too. You've uninstalled the software so you don't need it anymore. If on the chance you do decide to go back to Symantec just visiting the site will re-install the ActiveX Control. So no worries there.

So fix those two lines... reboot... and post a new HijackThis log for me please.

Also let me know how your computer is behaving now.

Thanks.
