shadow.exe made 11 modifications to my computer

Unread postby mak_20789 » December 28th, 2007, 5:55 am

Hi,
I got a message that shadow.exe made 11 modifications to my computer on 26th december at 15:40
At 15:25 the same day, I had run a full system scan with Norton and it scanned 280,420 items.
Today i ran full system scan again and total items scanned was 145,725
I ran scan again after 2 hours and total items scanned was 145,042.

All the scans are clear.
I also scanned with kapersky online scanner and it also says its clear.
Please tell me if shadow.exe is OK or some malware.

Thank you.

here is my hijackthis log, while running it i got some message about host files.

Hi mak_20789 :hello2:

You will need to search for Shadow.exe and find where it is located. When you have found it, upload it to Virus total for checking.

Submit a File For Analysis
We need to have the files below Scanned by Uploading them/it to Virus Total

Please visit Virustotal
Click the "Browse" button and navigate to
Shadow.exe
Click Submit/Send File
Please post back, to let me know the results.

Regarding the amount of files Norton scans, it may be that the scanner stores the file size and creation date.
If the file has not been altered then the scanner may not need to check it again.

PS regarding the taskbar movement you had on Vista, I have now got a Vista laptop and it does exactly the same thing

Hi katana,
thank you for the reply.

I searched for shadow.exe in every possible way but couldn't find it on my comp.
I even did advanced search for non-indexed, hidden and every other possible type but couldn't find.

And as for the movement on taskbar...well I can say now that I found someone sailing in the same boat... :)

Here is report of scan.
It said :
No viruses, spyware, Trojans, or any other ACTIVE or LATENT threats have been detected on your PC. However, cookies have been detected that could be spying on your PC.

I noticed one thing: It took a long time to reach 53%, scanned approximately same number of files Norton scans and ended suddenly. I guess this is doing what Norton did. However that is something you can decide.

Hi Katana,
thank you for helping me.
I have a few more questions..hope you wont mind.
When I type certain addresses in the address bar, like http://www.thesaurus.com instead of taking me to the site, it gives me search at live.search.com and asks were you looking for this site, and gives a link to exactly the same site I typed in address bar. However when I type without initial "www" the site opens and there is no "www" in its name. I am confused about this.I used to think that "www" is must for every site. Some sites are accessible with "www" but its gone when site opens.

Also, folders

main/documents/my music
main/documents/my pictures
main/documents/my videos

are not accessible. It says access denied.

Also there are .ini files in many folders. E.g. I see two desktop.ini files on my desktop, both having the same name.

Also please tell if I need to revert to the original settings that were before I did the scan.

thank you once again.

You don't need to use www any more, it is no longer needed.
If you get that search page, it is usually due to a misspelling.

You don't need to worry about the .ini files, they are needed and will disappear when we rehide files and folders.

RE.
main/documents/my music
main/documents/my pictures
main/documents/my videos

Is this the profile you use, or are you trying to access the folders from a different account ?

Do the following, then try to open the folders.

Download to your Desktop FixPolicies.exe, a self-extracting ZIP archive from here: http://downloads.malwareremoval.com/Bil ... licies.exe
  • Double-click FixPolicies.exe.
  • Click the "Install" button on the bottom toolbar of the box that will open.
  • The program will create a new Folder called FixPolicies.
  • Double-click to Open the new Folder, and then double-click the file within: Fix_Policies.cmd.
  • A black box will briefly appear and then close. This will likely stop the Administrative warnings. You can run this as many times as you like.

After clicking on install, I got following message from Programme Compatibility Assistant:

This programme might not have installed correctly.
If this program didnt install correxctly, try reinstalling using settings that are compatible with this version of Windows.

I still have the message on the desktop.
Shall I use "Reinstall using recommended settings"
or "This programme installed correctly" ?

On Vista, these are not actually folders they are just shortcuts that the OS uses.
Follow these instructions and they will disappear

Set correct settings for files that should be hidden in Windows Vista
  • Click the Vista Orb > Control panel > Folder Options > View tab.
  • Under "Hidden files and folders" if necessary select Do not show hidden files and folders.
  • If unchecked please checkHide protected operating system files (Recommended)
  • If necessary check "Display content of system folders"
  • If necessary Uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.
  • Click OK
