Hello all,

I have been trying for 4 days to get the right combination to remove this bad boy. First noticed it as a pop-up on my McAfee Firewall asking if it had permission to connect to the internet. It was refused, but I can't seem to get rid of the pop-up attempting to download their program when I first start up. I have tried Adware, McAfee Virusscan, ewido, Spybot and have now taken your advise to get HijackThis and post my problem.

Thanks in advance for any assistance you may offer.

Here's my HijackThis Logfile:

Hi ArgyrosfeniX

There are some items in your HJT log that need attention

    Please read these instructions carefully.

Let each process run to completion before starting the next
      • Download CCleaner and install, but do not run it yet.

      • Run HiJackThis and do a Scan Only. Carefully place a check against each of the following lines:

        R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://bfc.myway.com/search/de_srchlft.html
        R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
        R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
        R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {4D25F926-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - (no file)
        O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AdwareAlert] C:\Program Files\AdwareAlert\adwarealert.Exe -boot
        O16 - DPF: {DBA230D1-8467-4e69-987E-5FAE815A3B45} -

Close ALL OTHER WINDOWS and click on Fix Checked. When finished exit HijackThis.
Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:

      C:\Program Files\AdwareAlert\adwarealert.Exe
      Exit Explorer, and reboot afterwards.
      • Now, run CCleaner.
      • Uncheck "Cookies" under "Internet Explorer".
      • If running Firefox: click on the "Applications" tab and uncheck "Cookies" under "Firefox".
      • Click on Run Cleaner in the lower right-hand corner. This can take quite a while to run.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and we will take another look.

Hello to Nick & all others,

Just finished completing the above instructions. When I was going through your list of things to check in HJT, I noticed two suspicious items (they were on a list I had seen on a previous website that hadn't been as much help). I'll highlight them for you to take a look at.

    Thanks again everyone!

    Hi ArgyrosfeniX

You did welll to spot those lines. I had seen them but need to check up on them before we had you remove them.

Here are a new set of instructions for you to follow

Run Ewido and make sure it is updated with the latest definitions. Don't run a scan yet, that needs to be done later.

    Next reboot in safe mode.

Run HiJackThis and do a Scan only.
Put a check at the begining of this line:
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NI.UWFX5] "C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\UWFX5NetInstaller.exe"

Close any other open windows and click on Fix checked.

Use Windows Explorer to locate and delete this file:

    C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\UWFX5NetInstaller.exe

    Now run Ewido again:

    1. Click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run.
    2. If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. We have been finding some cases of false positives with the new version of Ewido, so we need to step through the fixes one-by-one. If Ewido finds something that you KNOW is legitimate (for example, parts of AVG Antivirus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk" have been flagged), select "none" as the action. DO NOT check "Perform action with all infections". If you are unsure of an entry, select "none" for the time being.
    3. When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again, post the log here and I will let you know if ewido needs to be run again.

Reboot as normal and post the Ewido Log back here along with a new HJT log.

    Hello Nick and everyone else,

During the step to remove UWFX5NetInstaller.exe, I was unable to find it.
The only items in C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\ were the following:

So when I rebooted this most recent time, the Win Fixer 2005 download box was a "no-show".
Is there anything else I need to do to sanitize my PC?
If not, I appreciate all the help and thanks again for everything!

    Hey ArgyrosfeniX

    You look clean now.

In your first post you said that you had used Adware. I believe that you you used it instead of AdAware SE which is referenced below.

Here is my standard information, in this situation, on how to keep clean. Please read it and use anything that applies to you :-
    1. Windows Updates. You can get more informationdirect from Microsoft about critical updates including SP2.
    2. Use a Firewall. This will allow you restrict connections to and from your computer
    3. Use an AntiVirus Software, and be sure you update it at least once a week.
You must only use one of these since two or more will conflict with each other.
    4. Use of Anti-spyware programs. It's highly reccomended to use programs that protect you from spyware infection. Here are some free programs I recommend, you can use all of them together for full protection:

    Hello Nick,

You are correct about my using Adware, however, I have a copy of AdAware SE and have used it fairly often. It, however, didn't remove this Win Fixer Trash that was cluttering my PC. In my desperation, I did download the Adware, not thinking that it might be malware, until I saw the cookies it was supposedly getting rid of. I immediately trashed it but apparently not soon enough.

As for Virus Scanners, what would you recommend?

I have been using McAfee's which comes with my MSN account... If you believe one of the others may protect me better, please let me know. McAfee is also my Firewall, hence a two-in-one deal.

Thanks for all of your assistance!

You're using good products, there is no "right" one. The main thing is to keep everything updated and use an online antivirus scanner such as Panda on a regular basis as a backup. You can find it here:-

You did the right things and almost cleared everything yourself. Well done !!

    Nick.
