Hello Eagledunk,

I will be assisting you with your malware issues.
Please be patient as I need some time to review your Hijackthis log and i will post back recommendations for repairs.

As I am still a trainee, everything that I post to you, must be checked by an Admin or Moderator. Thus, there may be a tiny bit of a delay between posts, but it shouldn't be too long.

  • Whatever repairs we make, are for fixing your computer problems only and by no means should be used on another computer.
  • Continue to respond to this thread until I give you the All Clean! If you have any question or you're stuck in there please reply it to me. I will try my best to help you!
  • Please bookmark or favourite this page. In case you need it as reference or etc.

Hello Eagledunk,

Your copy of HijackThis needs to be in a folder of it's own. When HJT fixes anything, it makes backups of the original files in the folder it is in. For this reason it cannot be run from a Zip file or from Temporary folders because the backups will be deleted. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!

Please make a new folder to put your HijackThis.exe into. Anywhere on your hard drive is fine other than your Desktop or the Temp folder. We suggest you use something like "C:\Program Files\HijackThis" but feel free to use any name.
This is to ensure it makes the necessary backups for recovery if needed.
  • Right click on hijackthis.zip and select Extract all....
  • Extract all in the created folder "C:\Program Files\HijackThis"

See this link for help to unzip/extract properly:
http://www.nellie2.co.uk/extract.htm
---------------------------------------------------
After moving HijackThis to it's own folder please follow this step:

RENAME HIJACKTHIS

Using Windows Explore by right-clicking the Start button and left clicking Explore navigate to: C:\Program Files\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe

Right-click on HijackThis.exe & select Rename to scanner.exe
---------------------------------------------------
Update Java Runtime:

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 3.
  • Go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
  • Click on the link named Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 3
  • Click on the radio button to Accept License Agreement
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save the downloaded file to your hard disk
  • Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
  • Uninstall all old versions of Java (Java 2 Runtime Environment, JRE or JSE)
  • Reboot your computer
  • Delete the folder C:\Program Files\Java if present
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file, and follow the on-screen instructions.
---------------------------------------------------
Download and Run ComboFix
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall
---------------------------------------------------
Post back:
Combofix report.
A new HijackThis log.

Hi there

Actually a very very kind friend reinstalled my operating system so things are working much better. He also set me up with bitdefender so hopefully my virus days are behind me.

Thank you for checking in!

Thanks for letting me know. :)

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your computer's security.

Ad-aware 2007
Download it from here
Find here the tutorial on how to use Adaware properly here

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.5.1
Download it from here. Just choose a mirror and off you go.
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spybot properly here
Find here changes from older version 1.4 here

Install Spyware Guard
Download it from here
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spyware Guard here

Install SpyWare Blaster
Download it from here
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spyware Blaster here

Install WinPatrol
Download it from here
Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works here

Install FireTrust SiteHound
Download it from here

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.

FIREWALL
Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. If you use the Windows Firewall you might think that's sufficient but it only controls one way of the traffic (inbound). Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. It's preferable to install one of the suggested firewalls.
