Unread postby Ellymoo » September 2nd, 2005, 1:03 pm

Thanks for your help on my previous log. This is one from my computer rather than my neighbour's. It is running slow and MSN seems to crash it; also it doesn't always turn off, it sometimes gets stuck.

Thanks in advance!

Ellymoo,

One of the major issues with W98 is the total number of progarms running at startup.
We need to minimize the programs that start automatically. This does not restrict your ability to run these programs from the Programs Menu, or from a desktop icon.
First, I will ask you to remove a couple known resource hogs from your startup with HiJackThis.
Then we will run a reboot, do a cleanup with CCleaner, and see where we stand.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove log items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis. If the opening screen shows, choose None of the above, just start the program.
Click Scan. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [LoadQM] loadqm.exe
O4 - Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE

Make sure all other windows except HJT are closed, and Click Fix Checked.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Reboot your machine.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Download and install CCleaner from here.
Run CCleaner. Make sure the Cleaner block on the left is selected. Choose the Windows tab. Check everything EXCEPT cookies, and Autocomplete Form History and the Advanced part of the Menu. Choose Run Cleaner. This process could take a while. When CCleaner shows how much has been removed, cleaning is finished. Click Exit.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Retrieve the List of Installed programs Using HJT
Open HijackThis, click Open The Misc Tools Section. Then scroll down the list if you need to, click Open Uninstall Manager and Save List...
The List of installed programs will automatically be saved as uninstall_list.txt in your HiJackThis folder. In addition, the list opens in Notepad so you can also save as another name in another location if you wish. Please paste the contents into your next reply.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HJT Log
Reboot your computer. Start HijackThis. Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply. Please do not use Word Wrap when you paste in the reply.
Please remember to post the List of Installed Programs also.

Ellymoo

Your log looks clean to me, and I don't see anything additional to remove from startup, without changing the way you do things.

This is a fairly heavily loaded machine for W98, and going forward I would be reluctant to add anything new that runs at startup.
How is it running?

It runs slowly, and often freezes when I am shutting it down so I have to turn it off manually. Is there anything on there that I don't need or can delete safely? I'm hoping to get a new one but it may be a while!

Ellymoo,

Sometimes, MSGSRV32.EXE has trouble with either SoundBlaster cards or the Power Profile.
You can safely turn off the Power management. We will disable the registry entry below.
I think it's under Ctrl Panel, Display, Screen Savers tab.
Set monitor and hard drive shutdown to Never

Do you use the computer as your telephone?
Are you connected to another network where you use drives on other machines? There are also known problems with W98 shutdown vis-a-vis mapped drives.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Use Add/Remove Programs In Control Panel
From Start,Settings,Control Panel or Start,Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight the following entries, one by one, if they exist, and choose Remove :

Ad-Aware 6

Make sure Ad-Aware SE runs properly after this uninstall. If not, Uninstrall it also, then download and install Ad-Aware SE again.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove log items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis. If the opening screen shows, choose None of the above, just start the program.
Click Scan. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)
O3 - Toolbar: &Google - {2318C2B1-4965-11d4-9B18-009027A5CD4F} - c:\program files\google\googletoolbar1.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [LoadPowerProfile] Rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,LoadCurrentPwrScheme
O4 - Startup: WinZip Quick Pick.lnk = C:\Program Files\WinZip\WZQKPICK.EXE

Make sure all other windows except HJT are closed, and Click Fix Checked.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Use My Computer (Windows Explorer) navigate to C:\Program Files\WinZip\WZQKPICK.EXE, right click it and choose create shortcut.
Then reduce the window size, and drag the shortcut(.lnk) to the desktop and drop it. This will give desktop access to winzip without the start entry.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Reboot the machine
-----------------------------------------------------------
Run CCleaner. Click Exit.
-----------------------------------------------------------
I would run the defragmenter also. Start, Programs, Accessories, System tools, Disk Defragmenter.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HJT Log
Reboot your computer. Start HijackThis. Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply. Please do not use Word Wrap when you paste in the reply.

Let me know how it's running , and the answers to the questions.
Thanks
edit:it also occurs to me that it might help to turn off any screensavers while you are in the display dialog(set to none),

Thanks for your reply. I did everything apart from the disc defrag. When I try to do this it gets to about 10% and then it says that the disc content has changed and is "recharging"... :?:

Ellymoo,

Let the defragmenter go thru that routine about "drive is changing..", etc.
It will then restart the defragmentation, run awhile, and do it again. You can click "Details" and watch it.
It happens because it has a lot of fragments to track, and runs out of housekeeping space, so it has to re-initialize and start again. If your C: drive is badly fragmented, it may restart itself ten or fifteen times. Each time it will get a bit more done. If you just leave it alone, it WILL finish itself, and ask if you want to Quit Defragmenter. Then you can answer Yes.
(If it restarts a lot, it means you really did need to do it)

Hi again :)

I left it for all night last night (at least 8 hours) and this morning it said that it couldn't defrag cos there were errors on the disc. So I had to do a Scandisc. I did a basic scan and it said there were no errors, but when I tried to do a thorough scan it said after a while, "Look, other programmes are running; Windows has interrupted this scan and it has had to restart ten times, do you want to continue getting these messages or not??" really snottily. But no other programmes were running.... ?!?!?!?!?!

Ellymoo,
Make sure you have no scheduled tasks, and no screensaver running.
These things keep querying the processor with,"Is it time yet?".
Sounds like the disk is pretty full, also. Defrag needs 15%-20% free to work properly.

I notice the power profile is still running at startup. Did you shut off the monitor and hard drive "power saving" stuff?
You can kill this line with HJT- check and click Fix checked with nothing else open:
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [LoadPowerProfile] Rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,LoadCurrentPwrScheme

Thank you for your help... I'd turned off the screensaver, but I'll turn the power thing off using HJT and try again!

OK Scandisc still came up with the same error, but this time I was able to complete the disc fragmenter so there weren't any errors on the disc. The computer STILL won't shut down properly though and freezes on the shutdown screen... :x

Ellymoo,
There are quite a few possible reasons for a W98SE shutdown freeze, most a bit outside my area of experience.
I don't think this has to do with malware.
My recommendation is to have a look at these sites, print out the web pages, and try to check out the recommendations.
After looking this stuff over, if you still need assistance, I would suggest posting at a site like http://www.pcpitstop.com
They are experienced system troubleshooters.
