Adsite popups?

Unread postby KGhaleon » December 15th, 2007, 11:37 pm

I'm cleaning a laptop running Windows XP Home for someone I know, and it appears to be clean...but everytime I reboot and open Firefox I get hit by a popup/adware from "Adsite." I ran quite a number of programs(AVG and Kaspersky7, online BitDefender, AdawareSE, SpyHunter and SpyBot, Superantispyware, AVG-antispyware, etc), and used both CCleaner and ATF-Cleaner. I checked the hijackthis log below and it appears to be clean to me. I've attached it to the bottom of this post.

I tried changing the hijackthis.exe name to something else, in case malware was hiding from it...but nothing new came up. When I did the original scans, I cleaned quite a lot of malware off...from downloaders to trojans, worms and backdoors, keyloggers, etc. I would reformat, but it's not an option. The guy that owns it is coming to pick it up tomorrow and I want to make sure nothing else is on here.

I did some research and thought this adsite malware might be related to the toolbars he has on here, so I tried removing them all. Google toolbar seems to be the only one that doesn't want to come off...I uninstall it, and it just appears again. :( Removal through add/remove programs isn't working.

I've ran scans in normal and safe mode, cleaned the restore points and kept the laptop off the internet. Everything seems good until I hit that popup. Also, Kaspersky seems to detect new adware everytime I reboot the laptop...which worries me. I think new malware is still being downloaded onto the machine from somewhere. I updated the HOSTS file.
He had Vundo infections, so I ran VundoFix and removed all that I could find related to it.

The guy that owns the laptop uses Azureus and Limewire, which I want to remove, but he seems to want them. They aren't currently running, so would those be responsible for the new malware?

Seriously confused. Could someone offer some suggestions on what else I should do? I need to give this back to him. :(

KG

(Note: I tried running Combofix, but it stalled for over 30 minutes)

Here is the log. You'll notice that I have two AV programs running, so I'll be removing one of them. Not sure whether to keep AVG or Kaspersky.

Are you being paid for fixing this computer?
I notice there is another post with a similar request on this board.
We are NOT providing volunteers to fix computers for those who are being compensated for their "work", nor are we going to provide help to those who want to make their own decisions about system changes.
Deciding to run tools without understanding how they work makes the cleanup job much more difficult, and may permanently trash the system..

I need to know exactly what is going on.
If there is no response within 24 hours, this post will be CLOSED.

I've found and removed the last of the infections and no longer require assistance, sorry for bothering you. I was just looking for some suggestions. You can lock or delete this.
