How to remove Trojan Downloader Generic 6?

Unread postby EliCuite » December 4th, 2007, 3:31 am

It started from yesterday(December 3rd)morning that the AVG popup read "threaten found" on C drive of my computer; and the "threaten" was called Trojan Downloader Generic 6. Among the options of heal or move to vault; I'd chosen heal. It subsequently popup that 'the object has been successfully healed". However, was only to find that the alert of "threaten found" reappeared. I chose tn heal it again. And then even though I've got latest AVG, and it automatically runs everyday; I ran the AVG again. But it wasn't really helpful. Whenever I click the icon of "firefox" on screen or click on any of my friend's name on MSN, the alert would re-appear. And also I found that there is problem to "normally" log into Hotmail. By saying so, I mean every time I entered into username and password, then instead of log in, it would appear lots of unreadable codes. After I click "Re-flash", the normal site of how many unread emails would appear--however the font on the webpage has been enlarged---as if it's for senior citizens.

I don't know the cause either. As recently I haven't received anything of suspicious. And I haven't been browsing anything with pop ups, or advertisements. Please do help me to identify the problem and provide solution. It is really annoying!

Hello and welcome to the forums

My name is Katana and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

Please observe these rules while we work:
1. If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
2. Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
3. Please continue to respond until I give you the "All Clear"
(Just because you can't see a problem doesn't mean it isn't there)

If you can do those three things, everything should go smoothly :D

  • Save HJTinstall.exe to your desktop.
  • Double click on the HJTinstall.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\\Program Files\\Trend Micro\\Hijack This.
  • Click I accept
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
  • Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Installed Programs
Please could you give me a list of the programs that are installed. This will help me create a fix for you.
  • Start HijackThis
  • Click on the Config button
  • Click on the Misc Tools button
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
You will see a list with the programs installed in your computer.
Click on save list button and specify where you would like to save this file.
When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file.
Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad into your next post.

Update Your Windows XP.
You are currently using an unpatched version of Windows XP.
Before attempting to remove malware, it is CRITICAL that you update to Service Pack 1a.
Get SP1a here : http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp1/default.mspx
You should also get SP2, but NOT NOW, rather only after your machine is clean.
After updating your Windows to SP1a, post a new HijackThis log please, using the Reply button.
