Hi,

I've inherited a neighbour's pc to try and fix the problem he's getting with constant new IE windows advertising celldorado.com and various spyware security warnings. I've followed the sticky on here and run superantispyware, adaware, and bitdefender beforehand. Problem still exists so here's the hijackthis log:

(My friend tells me he doesn't use incredimail, but it wont allow me to unstall it..??)

Hi! Welcome to the MWR forums.
My name is Scotty. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research.

Please be patient as my posts to you have to be checked before I reply, so they make take longer.

Please make a uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here in a reply.

Hi

P2P Warning!
Please note that as long as you are using any form of Peer-to-Peer networking and downloading files from non-documented sources, you can expect infestations of malware to occur
Once upon a time, P2P file sharing was fairly safe. That is no longer true. You may continue to use P2P sharing at your own risk; however, please keep in mind that this practice may be the source of your current malware infestation
Additional information on the safety of Peer to Peer programs themselves is here :
Clean/Infected P2P Programs
Please refrain from using your P2P during the course of your fix, so you dont risk inviting more malware onto your computer.

I see that Viewpoint Media Player is installed. Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player’s components. You can disable this using the Viewpoint Manager Control Panel found in the Windows Control Panel menu. By selecting Disable auto‑updating for the Viewpoint Manager ‑‑ the player will no longer attempt to check for updates. Anything that is installed without your consent is suspect. Read what Viewpoint says and make your own decision.
To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint. Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player. The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information. CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without user's approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This may change, read Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware.
I recommend that you remove the Viewpoint products; however, decide for yourself. To uninstall the the Viewpoint components (Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player):
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  3. In Add or Remove Programs, highlight Viewpoint Media Player, click Remove.

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.

  1. Close all applications and windows.
  2. Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  3. When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  4. Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt in your next reply

Re: modeless browser popups

Unread postby solfer » December 5th, 2007, 5:21 pm

Scotty,

Just to reiterate, this isn't my PC - I was already aware of the problems and never use any P2P for the exact reason mentioned!

That's exactly what I told my neighbour when I noticed he'd been using Limewire. I've had headaches galore previsouly trying to clean up my nephew's PC after he'd been usinf similar P2P software.

I'll go through your reply now, thanks.

Scotty, although that exe appears in the DSS log, when I browse to that directory it doesn't show. Explorer's set to show hidden files & folders, so I guess it's been removed and left a registry entry behind?

The PC hasn't been used since I last replied to you.

I'll do the Panda scan and get back to you.

PS - Is that Oor Wullie?? I remember having an annual of him (way) back in the day!!

Go to http://virusscan.jotti.org
Copy the following line into the white textbox:
C:\WINDOWS\orun32.isu
Click Submit.
Please post the results of this scan to this thread.[/quote]

  • When the installation is complete, the tool will start automatically.
  • If it doesn't start automatically, please double click on Navilog1 shortcut on your desktop to run it.
  • Press E for English from the language Menu.

No more nasty ads popping up any more. Are we clean now? That'll be one happy neighbour when this box goes back later. Cheers Scotty :)

Hi solfer

Run HijackThis, select Do a system scan only and place checks against the following entries (if they are still present):
WITH ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED Click on Fix Checked and exit HijackThis.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner. You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:

      + Extended(If available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:

      + Scan Archives
      + Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post with a new HijackThis log.
