Unread postby chrishaolin » August 29th, 2005, 5:14 pm

Hi.. first post here..

The other day, I ran "PC Integrity scanner", and on my list of running processes, i am seeing that i have some processes that have been added by various worms.. These processes include svchost.exe, smss.exe, winlogon.exe, even an explore.EXE.. these were in addition to the valid windows processes with the same name.

some of the worms it listed were
SOBER.K
WEBUS.F
NEVEG.A

I have run everything that I can think of, but with no luck. These programs include SSD, Adware, HJT, Norton Antivirus, AVG, Spysweeper..

Any help would be very much appreciated!

Regards,

Chris

chrishaolin,
A question : Do you use speakeasy.net as an ISP? or game provider?

The update KBD.exe has been troublesome. We will remove it from
startup, but leave it on your machine. See here : http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;812337

This line O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler V3.exe is a 3Com modem update reminder. We will remove it from startup unless you see a need for it.

The PC Integrity Scanner may flag ordinary system files as worms or viruses. We will rely on other tools to double-check.

First we need to temporarily disable a couple things that would prevent our corrections.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Disable SpySweeper
- Open it, Click Options over on the left, then Program options
- Uncheck load at windows startup.
- Over to the left, Click shields and Uncheck all there.
- Uncheck home page shield.
- Uncheck automatically restore default without notification.
(Reverse this process after your malware removal is complete).
-----------------------------------------------------------
Disable SpywareGuard
- Right Click the running icon of Spywareguard to open the program.
- Then go to Menu, File, Exit.
- Confirm the program is closed.
(Reverse this process after your malware removal is complete).
-----------------------------------------------------------
- Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Use Add/Remove Programs In Control Panel
From Start,Settings,Control Panel or Start,Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight the following entries, one by one, if they exist, and choose Remove :

Party Poker

Take extra care in answering any questions posed by the uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into choosing to keep the program.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove log items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis. If the opening screen shows, choose None of the above, just start the program.
Click Scan. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KBD] C:\HP\KBD\KBD.EXE
O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler V3.exe
O9 - Extra button: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\Program Files\PartyPoker\PartyPoker.exe
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\Program Files\PartyPoker\PartyPoker.exe

Make sure all other windows except HJT are closed, and Click Fix Checked.
-----------------------------------------------------------
File and Folder Deletion.
In Windows Explorer, navigate to this folder, and Delete if present:.
C:\Program Files\Party Poker\
Note if it is present and you cannot delete it.
You may have to delete all the underlying files and folders before a target folder can be deleted.
If you have any problem deleting a file, right click the file and check Properties to see if it's read-only. Uncheck the read-only box, click Apply and OK. Then retry Delete.
Note the name and location of any file you cannot delete.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HJT Log
Reboot your computer. Start HijackThis. Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply. Please do not use Word Wrap when you paste in the reply.

chrishaolin,

You already have some good protections installed.
You don't need PC Integrity Scanner. It's really better suited for a User who has the inclination to research all the notices.

You have two anti-virus apps in the running processes at the same time. This may reduce the protection available, and could result in system instability. You should remove one of them, or at least stop the real time protection from ONE of them, so it is only used as a scanner on demand.
You can choose Options and disable autoprotect in Norton's. I am not sure how to disable the AVG automatic protection- see what you can find.
When you are successful and reboot, you should only see one of them in the running processes in the HJT log.

Ewido would detect any worms resident on your system.
If you decide not to use the paid version of ewido, you can first uninstall it, then Download a-squared free from here. Install and update. This program is a very competent trojan/worm scanner, but does not protect e-mail. Suggest not to run in addition to ewido, but only as a possible substitute.

I still need to know about speakeasy.net to decide about that O17 line.
If the Party Poker folder is gone, that should be fine.
The spysweeper issue is OK as is, since we were able to make our changes, and spysweeper is still running.
Is the machine running smoothly?
-----------------------------------------------------------
Please Post a New HJT Log
Reboot your computer. Start HijackThis. Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply. Please do not use Word Wrap when you paste in the reply.

you would not suggest keeping both ewido and a-squared even if both are not running in the background? Can I keep both just to run occasionally?

I am not sure what speakeasy.net is. Definitely not my ISP, and not a game provider that I subscribe to as far as I know..

chrishaolin,

You can keep both anti-trojan apps as you say, but ewido will run out in 30 days, if I remember correctly, if you do not choose the paid version.

The O17 line has to do with a local LAN, so is not a security threat.

Glad we could help out.
